Best Sites For Rating Movies: 6 Top Movie Review Websites

movie review aggregator websites

Our society has grown to worship movies. This can be seen in the sheer number of movies made each year, some good and some bad. Because there are so many to choose from, finding a good one can be a challenge.

Movies now make up a huge part of the entertainment industry. But with so many choices comes the problem of finding the best ones to watch.

It would take hours upon hours to watch every movie made in a year, and even then you’d likely miss some great ones. So how can we solve this problem?

The answer reviews. Reviews allow us to get an idea of whether or not others liked the movie before we decide if it’s worth watching ourselves.

BEST SITES FOR RATING MOVIES

What are movie review sites.

Movie review sites like IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, and Letterboxd are great places to find out what a movie is all about.

They can also be useful for finding out if your favorite actor has been in other movies you may have missed.

Movie review websites are one of the best ways to learn what critics think of a movie and how they feel about it.

The more information you can gather on a film, the better informed you’ll be when you decide whether to watch it or not.

Movie review sites don’t really have any effect on box office sales, but they can make a huge difference in determining what kind of an impact a movie will have on consumers.

A review helps us determine if others were entertained by a movie before we spend our time and money on it.

Picking a movie to watch can be hard. You have your mood to consider, the weather, and the amount of time you have available.

And who to see it with? But even after all that, one question remains — is it any good?

With sites like Letterboxd, the answer is now as easy as logging into your social media account.

The internet can be an overwhelming place when trying to find a good, reliable movie review site.

With so many sites out there, it’s hard to know which ones are actually worth your time.

With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of the best movie review sites out there. Not everyone will be for everyone, but each reviewer has something unique to offer that makes it worth checking out.

Best Sites For Rating Movies

If you love the cinema, and you’re constantly looking for the best ways to keep up to date with what’s new and what’s upcoming, then one of these sites is going to be perfect for you.

Below, we’ve gone through some of the most popular movie websites on the internet today and reviewed them, so that you can find out which site is best for your film needs.

Let’s start off with my personal favorite!

Letterboxd is a social network for sharing your taste in film. Keep a watchlist of films you’d like to see, and create lists/collections on any topic. Rate, review, and tag films as you add them. Find and follow friends to see what they’re enjoying.

Keep a diary of your film viewing, check in to films at theaters, and share your thoughts with the world. Search a database of over 2 million films, with filters that can refine your results by anything from decade and genre to personal ratings and reviews.

From Letterboxd themselves: “We’re proud of our place in a burgeoning ecosystem of film-related apps and websites that complement Letterboxd’s focus on social sharing, curation, and discovery.

In that spirit, we offer a range of developer tools to help integrate Letterboxd data into other applications and websites — you can explore these on our developer site.”

Letterboxd

Originally a fan-operated website, the database is owned and operated by IMDb.com, Inc., a subsidiary of Amazon.

IMDb has approximately 4.7 million titles (including episodes) and 8.3 million personalities in its database,  as well as 83 million registered users.

IMDb stands out for its vast collection of film and television information. It’s not just a place for ratings; it’s a comprehensive resource for release dates, cast and crew details, trivia, and forums for discussion.

With user-contributed content and professional critic reviews, IMDb offers a balanced view of a film’s reception. Its integration with Amazon also allows for easy viewing options.

Best Sites For Rating Movies – Why Use Movie Review Sites?

Movie Review sites like IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes , and Metacritic are helpful for many reasons.

First, they’re an excellent source for learning about the best films.

Second, it’s another great way to find out about movies that are just being released or will be released in the future.

And third, movie review sites have other useful information like trailers, showtimes and tickets, DVD release dates, and more.

There are a lot of fans who love talking about movies, and these movie review sites offer them a great place to do just that. You can find out what other people think of the movie you’re watching.

Here are the top 5 reasons to use movie review sites:

1. You want to discover new films, new genres, or new directors to check out.

2. You’re not sure exactly what you want to see, and you’re looking for movie recommendations.

3. You’re looking for a good way to kill time when you’re stuck in a waiting room.

4. You wonder why that movie was such a big deal when it came out.

5. You want to find out how the latest movies compare to the classics.

User Experience and Interface

The user experience and interface of a movie rating site can significantly impact its usability.

IMDb offers a user-friendly interface with easy navigation to different sections. Its search functionality is robust, allowing users to find detailed information swiftly.

Rotten Tomatoes’ interface is clean and intuitive, with scores prominently displayed and easy access to both critic and audience reviews.

Metacritic’s layout is straightforward, focusing on presenting scores and reviews in an accessible format. Each site’s design enhances the process of discovering and evaluating movies.

Mobile Accessibility of Movie Rating Sites

The accessibility of movie rating sites on mobile devices is a crucial aspect for users who rely on smartphones and tablets.

IMDb provides a comprehensive mobile app, allowing users to access its extensive database on the go.

Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic also offer mobile-friendly websites and apps, ensuring that users can check movie ratings, read reviews, and find film recommendations easily, no matter where they are.

These apps maintain the functionality of their desktop counterparts, offering a seamless mobile experience.

Community Features of Movie Rating Sites

Community features play a significant role in movie rating sites. IMDb’s forums provide a space for in-depth discussions and debates among movie enthusiasts.

Rotten Tomatoes allows users to leave their own reviews and ratings, fostering a community of shared opinions.

Metacritic’s user reviews complement professional critiques, offering diverse perspectives.

These community elements enhance the overall experience by enabling engagement and interaction among users.

Streaming Service Ratings vs. Dedicated Movie Rating Sites

Comparing movie ratings on dedicated sites like IMDb, Rotten Tomatoes, and Metacritic with those on streaming platforms like Netflix reveals differences in approach.

Streaming services often use personalized algorithms to suggest films, focusing on individual viewing habits.

In contrast, dedicated movie rating sites provide broader insights with aggregated critic and user ratings, offering a more holistic view of a film’s reception.

This comparison helps users understand the value of different rating sources in selecting movies.

Movie Rating Sites – Wrap Up

Wrapping up, movie rating sites play an indispensable role in guiding viewers through the vast landscape of cinema.

Whether you are looking for critically acclaimed art-house films or mainstream blockbusters, these sites offer valuable insights and detailed information to inform your choice.

By leveraging the unique features and community aspects of each platform, movie enthusiasts can enhance their viewing experience, making informed decisions about what to watch next.

We hope you’ve enjoyed our complete guide to the best sites for rating movies. What’s your favorite movie review site? Let us know in the comments below!

About Rotten Tomatoes ®

As the world’s most trusted and recognized source of movie and TV reviews, Rotten Tomatoes and the Tomatometer score have served as the most reliable home of entertainment recommendations for over 25 years. We offer authentic reactions in a broad range of reviews from professional critics and everyday fans alike in addition to helpful, easily digestible what-to-watch roundups. Not only that, but we help build anticipation and provide fans with access to first look entertainment previews, trailers, behind-the-scenes exclusives, and more, as well as original editorial features, fun and informative video series, and even books and games. If you're an entertainment fan looking for a diverse range of perspectives curated in an easy-to-understand format, we'll help you find what you're in the mood for and open your eyes to new things to enjoy.

What is the Tomatometer®?

Tomatometer scores are based on the collective opinions of hundreds of film and television critics and serve as a trusted measurement of critical entertainment recommendation for millions of fans. The Tomatometer score represents the percentage of professional critic reviews that are positive for a given film or television show. We have recently updated our criteria for the number of reviews it takes for a Tomatometer score to populate. You can read more about that HERE .

When at least 60% of reviews for a movie or TV show are positive, it is considered Fresh and a red tomato is displayed.

When less than 60% of reviews for a movie or TV show are positive, it is considered Rotten and a green splat is displayed.

If a title has not released yet or there are not enough reviews to generate a Tomatometer score, a gray faded tomato is displayed.

What is Certified Fresh?

Certified Fresh status is a special designation awarded to the best-reviewed movies and TV shows. To qualify, movies or TV shows must meet the following requirements:

  • A Tomatometer score of 75% or higher, with at least five reviews from Top Critics.
  • Films in wide release must have a minimum of 80 reviews. This also applies for films expanding from limited to wide release.
  • Films in limited release must have a minimum of 40 reviews.
  • Streaming movies must have a minimum of 40 reviews.
  • Only individual seasons of a TV show are eligible, and each season must have a minimum of 20 reviews.
  • Theatrical releases that premiere at festivals must have an announced release date.

Rotten Tomatoes has a team of curators whose job is to gather thousands of movie and TV reviews weekly. The team constantly collects movie and TV reviews from Tomatometer-approved critics and publications generating Tomatometer scores. Our curation process considers these reviews, noting if they are Fresh or Rotten, and our curators choose a representative pull-quote. Tomatometer-approved critics can also self-submit their reviews.

What is the Popcornmeter?

The Popcornmeter, which captures audience sentiment, is represented by a popcorn bucket and indicates the percentage of fans who have rated a movie or TV show positively. When we can verify users have bought a ticket to a film, the default score shown is composed of “Verified Ratings.” For all other titles, we display an “All” score that includes ratings from people regardless of whether or not we can verify that they have seen the movie. Titles displaying Verified Ratings also have an All score. To view it, simply click on the popcorn bucket and you can toggle between the two.

We have updated our criteria for the number of ratings it takes for the Popcornmeter to populate a score. You can read more about that HERE .

When at least 60% of users give a movie or TV show a star rating of 3.5 or higher, a full popcorn bucket is displayed.

When less than 60% of users give a movie or TV show a star rating of 3.5 or higher, a tipped over popcorn bucket is displayed.

If a title has not released yet or there are not enough reviews to generate an Audience Score, a gray faded popcorn bucket is displayed.

If we can confirm that a user bought a ticket to a movie they've reviewed, a checkmark icon is displayed next to the review.

What is Verified Hot?

The Verified Hot status and badge is an elevated designation honoring the highest verified reviewed theatrical films by fans. Verified Hot is composed of Verified Ratings and Reviews from the Popcornmeter score and will be applied to all eligible first run movies released on or after May 2019. To qualify, a movie must meet the following achievement qualifications:

  • Have a Verified Audience Score of 90% or higher.
  • Have a minimum of 500+ Verified Ratings for films in wide release.
  • Have a minimum of 250+ Verified Ratings for films in limited release.
  • Repertory titles (such as classic rereleases) are also eligible for the designation.

Community & Critics Code of Conduct

At Rotten Tomatoes, we are always looking to update our policies to try to ensure we maintain a safe and fair community for every movie and TV fan. For our Community Code of Conduct, click HERE . You can also find our Tomatometer-approved Critics Code of Conduct HERE .

5 Things I Would Do Differently if I Could Start My Social Media All Over Again

This dating app may have leaked extremely private data: check your account now, what is a digital footprint here's what to know about your online trail.

Rotten Tomatoes is great for movies, but what about the rest? These sites track reviews from top critics to find the best-reviewed books, music, gadgets, games, and cryptocurrencies.

With so many newspapers, magazines, websites, and YouTube channels, there are reviews everywhere and about everything. Rotten Tomatoes solved the problem for films by aggregating all reviews for a movie and assigning it an average rating. You can now use the same system for a bunch of other fields, and in turn, discover what you should try next.

1. Book Marks (Web): Rotten Tomatoes for Books

Book Marks is a Rotten Tomatoes for books, giving an average rating for every book from 70 book reviewers

Book Marks started as a side project by the folks at Lit Hub, and has turned into its own entity. It's one of those fuss-free sites to find books to read , giving you a quick idea of what several critics think of a book.

The team at Book Marks scours 70 different publications known for their literary reviews (newspapers, magazines, and websites). Each book gets its reviews sorted into Rave, Positive, Mixed, and Pan, to give you an overall understanding of how it was received. For each review, you'll find a notable blurb as well as a link back to the full review.

Apart from a robust search engine, Book Marks also makes it easy to discover books worth reading. For instance, the Biggest New Books section is a hand-picked collection of trending books receiving awards and many reviews. You can also sort books by fiction, non-fiction, and other sub-genres. And you can check out the latest releases as well as the Best Reviewed books to find your next novel.

2. Any Decent Music? (Web): Rotten Tomatoes for Music

Any Decent Music tracks 50 global music publications to find the average review rating for any music album

Any Decent Music? (ADM) collects reviews about the latest albums from the 50 top publications around the world, but mostly from the USA and the UK. The idea is to become the Billboard charts for the most critically acclaimed music and artists at any moment.

The site succinctly explains its philosophy in a small blurb. The Recent Releases chart is where you need to concentrate. It brings together critical reactions to new albums and is updated daily. Albums qualify with five reviews and drop out after six weeks.

Once they're out of Recent Releases, you'll find the albums under other headings once you click Customise Your Chart. Here, you can set the duration (last 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, or all time) and choose among popular genres. A drop-down menu at the top of the site gives you a much larger selection of genres. Another similar menu lets you sort reviews by publication.

Apart from this simple rating system, ADM lists a few fresh and upcoming albums you should check out, the latest music album reviews, and an all-time top-ten list. Kendrick Lamar is ruling the roost there. With its use of real-world reviewers and lack of algorithms, Any Decent Music is one of the best ways to discover music recommended by real people .

3. RecoRank (Web): Rotten Tomatoes for Tech Products and Gadgets

RecoRank tells you the average rating for any tech product or gadget based on tech reviewers and YouTube reviewers

You'd think that with so many technology and gadget reviewers, there would already be something like Rotten Tomatoes for tech, right? Well, there wasn't, so developer Tavis Lochhead made one during the lockdown. RecoRank is functional, beautiful, and gets the job done.

Search the site for a tech product you're already interested in, or browse through categories to find the best-rated products. There is a robust filter system to add the specifications, price, or rating level you're looking for.

Each product shows you an overall aggregate rating, as well as the list of reviews on YouTube and websites it's sourced from. The product page also includes a price tracker to see its price fluctuations on Amazon. There's really nothing more you could want.

Also, if you have the time, scroll to the bottom of the page for RecoRank's Secret Content section. It has a few best and worst lists, popular comparisons between products, and the "best deals" section to find top-rated tech that's available at a deep discount.

4. OpenCritic (Web): Rotten Tomatoes for Video Games

OpenCritic is a MetaCritic alternative to find what most game reviewers thought about any video game on average

You must have heard of Metacritic, the review aggregator website for video games. It takes all reviews and presents an average, which some people thought wasn't the best way to represent how video game journalism currently works. OpenCritic offers a different take to provide a more holistic view.

The review aggregate of Top Critics will give a game one of four recommendation levels: Mighty, Strong, Fair, and Weak. OpenCritic's claim to fame is to use non-rating cues from reviewers. For example, even if a game has ranked 7/10, it can understand verdicts like Eurogamer's "Essential" and GameXplain's "Loved" to get a better sense of the game's rating.

The site itself keeps it simple for those who want to know a game's overall rating and read its reviews from various trusted publications. The annual Hall of Fame shows you the best games of the year, and you can further sort and browse by platform or genre.

5. Keysheet (Web): Rotten Tomatoes for Cryptocurrency

Keysheet gives a metarank for cryptocurrency based on expert reviews and recommendations

You can't escape conversations about cryptocurrency, and you might have thought about investing in it yourself. But how do you find reliable information in a nascent field where a lot of people have their own agendas? Keysheet is trying to fix that by rating cryptocurrencies, wallets, and other services around the industry.

You can't really get a traditional "review" of cryptocurrency like you can with games or books. So how does Keysheet work? The website has a panel of experts who are contributors to major crypto projects or are well-established voices in the community. The site tracks their blog posts, tweets, and other publications to find out what they think about any coin or product, and assigns a percentage.

For you, the reader, all this boils down to a simple interface. Click a coin to see its rating, filter the reviews by positive or negative, and choose which experts you want to read. Apart from coins, Keysheet also reviews products like cryptocurrency wallets , rewards programs, and other tools. You'll also find guides with expert advice in case you're out of your depth.

Rely on Experts, But Also Check User Reviews

These review aggregators are a fantastic way to quickly find a consensus among various critics. Plus, given that these sites take it seriously as to who they allow as experts and who they don't, you're assured of a certain quality.

That said, you shouldn't rely on expert reviews alone. There can be a considerable gap between the time the review was written and the time you are checking these sites. Opinions change, other products come in, and longevity does matter. It's a good idea to always check user reviews as well. Don't rely solely on them either, and make sure you  filter out fake reviews on Amazon  too. A healthy balance between experts and common users will lead you to the right choice.

Are movie critics biased?‎

The question of whether movie critics are biased is a complex one. While it is true that critics, like any ‎other human beings, have their own subjective preferences, it does not necessarily mean they are ‎inherently biased. Here are a few factors to consider:‎

Subjectivity and Personal Taste:‎

Movie criticism is inherently subjective because art, including film, is open to interpretation. Critics bring ‎their personal backgrounds, experiences, and tastes to their reviews, which can influence their opinions. ‎What resonates with one critic may not resonate with another. However, reputable critics strive to ‎evaluate films based on their artistic merits, storytelling, technical aspects, and cultural significance, rather ‎than solely on personal preferences.‎

Professionalism and Expertise:‎

Many movie critics have dedicated their careers to studying and analyzing films. They possess extensive ‎knowledge about film history, theory, and the craft of filmmaking. Their expertise allows them to provide ‎informed perspectives and critical insights. While personal biases may still exist, professional critics usually ‎aim to provide objective analyses and consider the broader context of a film’s production and cultural ‎impact.‎

Different Approaches and Critical Schools:‎

Film criticism encompasses a wide range of approaches and methodologies. Some critics focus on formal ‎analysis, examining the technical aspects of a film, while others emphasize the socio-cultural or political ‎implications of a movie. Critics may align with different critical schools or philosophies, which can result in ‎varying interpretations and evaluations. These diverse perspectives contribute to a well-rounded ‎understanding of a film’s strengths and weaknesses.‎

Influence and External Factors:‎

Critics, like any public figures, can be influenced by external factors such as industry relationships, ‎marketing campaigns, or personal biases. Some critics may succumb to these pressures, consciously or ‎unconsciously, affecting the objectivity of their reviews. However, reputable critics strive to maintain their ‎integrity and independence, providing honest opinions regardless of external influences.‎

Reader-Reviewer Relationship:‎

It is essential to recognize that movie criticism is a dialogue between the critic and the audience. Readers ‎often seek out critics whose opinions align with their own tastes or whose writing style resonates with ‎them. Therefore, what may be perceived as bias by some could simply be a critic’s consistent perspective ‎or writing style that attracts a specific audience?‎

When it comes to finding reliable movie reviews, these movie critic websites offer a range of perspectives ‎and insights. Rotten Tomatoes , IMDb, Metacritic , Letterboxd, Criticker, FilmAffinity, Reddit, and The ‎Guardian’s film section are just a few examples of the excellent resources available online. By exploring ‎these platforms, movie enthusiasts can make informed decisions about which films to watch, ensuring ‎their movie-watching experiences are both enjoyable and enriching.‎ In addition to these websites, some film and series production platforms such as Netflix or Amazon Prime ‎sometimes review films and series.‎

Top 10 Best Movie Review Sites

movie review aggregator websites

Of course, this is the biggest, most well-known, and best movie-reviewing website of all time. With hundreds of thousands of votes from random people and critics around the world, you can submit your rating out of ten stars, and it contributes to the final rating. Many movies have over a million ratings and thousands of reviews. You can write your own review, but it is unlikely anyone will get to it as there are so many. The only problem with this website is that there are tens

The best movie reviewing site by far. There are two review sections: for users and for experts.

Some of their reviews are very questionable, but overall this website is okay.

This recently deceased critic has detailed, accurate, and in-depth reviews of practically every movie. He was a very good critic, but as he is just one person you can't exactly say he's better than IMDb, which has over 10 million users.

movie review aggregator websites

This website is pretty amazing. It only has one random person who gives the movie a rating out of five stars, with the average being three. The rating is usually inaccurate, so the reviewing aspect of this website isn't great. However, they give a very accurate age rating and a ranking out of five for different categories such as violence and inappropriate content. Users can also give their own rating out of five stars and age rating, though it goes into a different category. This is quite good.

I knew nothing about them before this, but while researching for this list many people seemed to like them. After checking out the website, they seem good.

Ah, I forgot WatchMojo! Thank you to whoever added this to the list.

This website is definitely not for people who just enjoy watching movies for their own sake, but for serious scholarly film buffs. It puts out print magazines that highlight a handful of articles focusing on the different artistic aspects of the movie. Very good, but sometimes a bit boring and maybe not for the average person.

Just an average movie reviewing website. I have nothing negative to say about them, nor anything positive, so they earn a place on here.

Movie Review Aggregators Grow in Popularity, But Do They Matter?

Rotten Tomatoes is the best known of three movie review aggregators, but Metacritic and Movie Review Intelligence are increasingly in the mix

movie review aggregator websites

With media splintering more each passing year, movie review aggregator sites like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic have grown in popularity, regularly popping up in studio marketing materials and box office reporting.

But how important are they? Are they any more reliable gauges of quality – or success – than traditional film critics were in their heyday?

Depends on who you ask. Studios certainly pay attention to top aggregators, even if they don't always like to assign much importance to them. Film critics like the exposure on Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic and Movie Review Intelligence, but they are uneasy with some of the methodologies used.

“I don’t know if they mean anything,” one studio distribution chief told TheWrap, before proceeding to rattle off scores that the studio’s movies had recently received.

Another executive said that studios pay attention for a very simple reason: because viewers do.

“In the old days, you used to follow a critic,” the executive said, but that has changed. “People don’t want to read 40 reviews, so in less than 60 seconds, you can get a sense that 80 percent of the critics thought this movie was great – or not.”

Also read: Rotten Tomatoes, a Division of Warner Bros. — Can It Be Unbiased?

movie review aggregator websites

He’s less convinced of the value of the aggregated rankings.

"People quote the Tomato Meter," Ebert said. "But what does it really mean?"

The Tomato Meter gives a very simple read on how many of its critics gave the movie in question a favorable, or “fresh,” rating. Metacritic and Movie Review Intelligence take nuances of individual reviews into account. Their scores are generally similar – though Rotten Tomatoes methodology lends itself to higher high scores and lower low scores.

“We read through all the reviews we can find and give everything a simple up-or-down rating,” Atchity explained to TheWrap. To be considered fresh a movie needs to hit 60 percent; below that, it’s rotten.

The site looks at the work of about 500 critics, although most movies get 250 reviews at the most. If there’s a question, the staff will ask the critic. And if the critic says it’s neither one, Rotten Tomatoes, which is owned by Flixster, which is, in turn, owned by Warner Bros., will push for an answer.

“If you get a 90 percent Rotten Tomatoes, it sounds like a four-star review,” the executive said. “But what it really means is that 90 percent of the people who reviewed it, reviewed it favorably.” So studios sometimes tout their Rotten Tomatoes score rather than individual reviews because the Tomato Meter can look better.

movie review aggregator websites

Atchity does acknowledge that “there is less space for subtlety” in Rotten Tomatoes.

It used to be fairly easy to be a reviewer for the site. Any member of a critics’ organization was eligible.

“That’s no longer the case,” Atchity said. “That’s merely a part of the qualification.”

Like Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic’s staff of six reads reviews and decides whether they’re positive or negative. But they try to address how good – or how bad – a movie is.

Sometimes it’s easy: If critics give a movie four stars out of a possible five, Metacritic automatically gives the review an 80. But 40 percent of Metacritic’s reviewers do not assign scores, so Metacritic’s staff of six gives the review a number.

“There is a process of us reading these reviews and evaluating them,” Marc Doyle, Metacritic’s editor-in-chief, told TheWrap.

Metacritic, which is owned by CBS Interactive, reads far fewer reviews than Rotten Tomatoes – 44.

And while at Rotten Tomatoes, all critics are created equal, Metacritic assigns scores to critics as well as to their reviews.

The greater a critic’s stature, the more influential that critic’s opinion will be on the Metacritic score.

Like Metacritic, it has a relatively small number of critics – 51. And like Metacritic, it assigns each critic his or her own level of importance.

But instead of weighting critics based on stature, it looks at their readership.

Anybody working for a large-circulation publication – even someone with no previous experience – would be considered especially important in Movie Review Intelligence’s formula.

“The mainstream taste needs to be heard as part of the mix,” David Gross, the site’s editor and publisher, told TheWrap. “I proudly include People magazine and Us Weekly and AP, along with the Wall Street Journal, New York Times, LA Weekly and Slant magazine. There are some wonderful small publications that are doing fantastic critical work – but I think all voices need to be heard.”

So how do their ratings stack up?

All three gave high marks to “The Artist,” the highest scoring best picture nominee across all three sites, across all three sites: an 89 from Metacritic, a 92.2 from Movie Review Intelligence and a 97 from Rotten Tomatoes. In a potentially ominous sign for its Oscar prospects, the sites were far more mixed on “Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close,” which got a 46 on Metacritic, a 62.2 on Movie Review Intelligence and a 45 at Rotten Tomatoes.

Gross said that for the time being, he's pleased with his site's niche.

"The other sites are giants," Gross told TheWrap, "and so we’re happy to be the independent.”

Avantika: 10 Best Movies & TV Shows

10 classic movies that can't actually be rebooted, 10 best prime video tv shows of 2024.

While society has shifted away from the concept of having thousands of channels via cable or satellite TV (though this continues to exist for customers who choose to pay for these services), the growth in streaming means there’s still seemingly infinite choice.

Not only do customers have to sift through thousands of options to find quality content to watch, they also need to figure out where to access it among the various streaming services available and to which they subscribe. Thankfully, there are many websites and apps designed to help narrow down the search and find content suitable to all types of viewers.

A screenshot of the Reelgood website showing a search for romance TV shows on Hulu.

Reelgood provides a detailed look at TV shows and movies from more than 150 services, including Netflix, Hulu, HBO, and Disney+ as well as networks like Starz and Showtime, along with lesser-known services. Type a specific title in the search field of the website or Android or iOS app to find out where it is. For inspiration, search by genre, what’s new, what’s trending, by specific service, what’s free, or even by keywords like “Emmy nominees” or “IMDb top-rated.” There’s also the option to see not only what’s coming but also what will be leaving a specific service.

To get down to the nitty-gritty, search by various filters at once, like streaming service and genre, and see results with IMDb and Reelgood rating. Also sort by release date or most popular. A fun roulette feature can be used to search for random titles on Netflix based on genre and IMDB and Reelgood scores: sign up for an account to include other streaming services as well.

A screenshot of the page on the Decider website showing what to watch and some options.

The Decider search engine for locating content is powered by Reelgood, but the site also offers plenty of added features. See round-ups of the best movies or TV shows on different services, scroll through the “What to Watch” section, view recommendations by genre, platform, or even moods like “frisky” and “weird.” There’s a description of each show or movie along with a list of all the places it can be accessed, whether it’s via streaming or only available to buy/rent.

The handy “stream it or skip it” section highlights new content and provides expert opinions on whether it’s worth watching or not, including some of the most highly anticipated new TV shows streaming in 2022 .

Rotten Tomatoes

A screen shot from the Rotten Tomatoes search page showing results for the Amazon Prime show Paper Girls.

One of the most respected review aggregator websites, if a movie or TV show has been released, chances are it will be in the Rotten Tomatoes database, complete with a summary of top critic ratings as well as both critic and audience score. If a title is “Certified Fresh,” it means the site and its experts highly recommend it.

RELATED: 10 Best Movies Of 2021 According To Rotten Tomatoes

See a line-up of new and upcoming content on Rotten Tomatoes , read helpful articles about shows, and find links to reviews. There’s a continuously updated list of the most popular movies and TV shows and a breakdown of the latest Certified Fresh content for those looking for top-rated content. Also, get instant access to trailers and other videos related to popular content, and read “best of” and “most anticipated” guides.

A search result on the site Metacritic showing details for the TV show Reservation Dogs.

Like Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic is a respected review aggregator website. While its database isn’t as expansive, the reviews are provided by expert critics as well as audiences. See editor’s picks along with summaries and rating, see a highlight of what’s new, and read informative articles about what to watch from month to month.

Also covering music and video games, some titles are given a “must-watch” label beside the Metascore, which indicates editors believe it’s a top choice worth considering. With each title, see a breakdown of the reviews, full text, summary of the show and even episodes, and the overall rating.

A screen shot of search results on Flixable showing the best crime shows on Netflix.

Flixable ’s primary focus is Netflix, but with millions of subscribers making Netflix the most popular streaming TV service, ranked by subscriber numbers , it’s worth including for those who can't suitable titles through Netflix’s own recommendation engine.

Search by movies, TV shows, or both, then narrow down by genre, rating, and other parameters like what’s new or even a specific release year. See weekly highlights of added content and get a heads-up of what will be leaving to watch before it’s no longer available. There’s even an option to search by specific actors. Search for “Tom Hanks,” for example, and see that, at the time of this writing, his available titles include Catch Me If You Can , Road to Perdition , and The Terminal .

Download the JustWatch app or visit the website for movie and TV show recommendations from top services, including Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV+, and Amazon Prime Video, like the best TV shows of 2022 so far, according to Reddit . Search for a specific title, see what’s new or popular, or tap the "discover" link to get personalized recommendations based on interests and tastes.

There’s no login required: click on movie and TV shows that are appealing based on a selection provided and after selecting four or five, a list of worthwhile options will show up. The set-up is similar to an actual streaming service, with unique sections with themes like recently added, movies or shows available for purchase or rent, content that has been flagged as a favorite by other subscribers, watch lists from users with similar tastes and preferences, and even humorous ones like “romantic movies that don’t suck.”

Two phones showing the TV Time app on screen.

Dubbed the “world’s largest tracking tool for TV and movies,” TV Time is available on the web or scan the QR code on the homepage to download the mobile app. Track favorite TV shows and movies to get notifications when they are available or returning with new seasons, discover new content, and view data-driven insights on what others are watching when, and why they chose the content.

Designed to be a pseudo-TV guide, it aggregates content from a variety of services to present them in a guide format, including both linear networks and streaming services, like the smaller streaming platforms that are worth checking out . Have friends sign up too and keep track of who’s watching what, how far they have gotten into a season, and more.

Watchworthy

A phone screen showing the WatchWorthy app.

Access Watchworthy , powered by Ranker, via web browser or mobile app and get personalized TV recommendations from content across more than 200 streaming services to avoid having to flip back and forth among multiple ones. Use the app or site to build a personal watchlist to refer to whenever there’s a lull in the schedule, like after finishing the latest season of a show.

First, confirm the applicable services and channels. Then, functioning similar to a dating app, as show titles appear, pick which ones have already been viewed, if they were liked or disliked it, or for ones not yet seen, if there’s any interest or not. Not sure? Swipe right or left to skip. As the information is fathered, Watchworthy will determine the probability of liking or disliking a specific show, thus affording it a “worthy” score. Like magic, up pops a variety of shows that would likely appeal, with the most “worthy” at the top of the list. Click the like or dislike button for each and the engine will continue learning over time.

Two phones overlapping, showing the Qewd app on screen.

Another aggregator website and app, Qewd includes details on content from all the top streaming services, making it easy to explore trends and get a personally curated list of options to consider from both the site’s own tastemakers, as well as friends and family members.

The powerful engine is only part of the equation: Qewd focuses as much on the social aspect, helping users connect with friends, family members, and even favorite influencers and brands to see what other like-minded people are watching and recommending. Curate a personal “channel” with content from multiple streaming services, social platforms, and even other videos on the internet, so it’s easy to access via a single click. The app is new and there’s still a waitlist, but for TV and movie lovers, it might be worth waiting for.

4 Reasons Movie Review Aggregation Sites Rule

Image of Darren Ruecker

Professional critics like to give review aggregation websites enormous flak, claiming things like they are bad for criticism , degrade the quality of discussion surrounding movies, reduce the quality of a given movie to a calculation, and so on. These are the same types who will decry even the notion of applying a star rating or letter grade to a movie because you can’t evaluate art that way, people!! I actually agree with them to an extent. Grading films like you’re marking a math test, looking for evidence in the work of the “right” course towards the “right” answer, is a little dumb. It doesn’t work like that. Summing up a movie’s merits by saying it’s an 8 out of 10, for example, cheapens it a little, and doesn’t do justice to the depth and nuance any movie inherently possesses.

Then again, you could argue that trying to describe a film’s effect in words also cheapens it. Verbally explaining a movie’s effect on a viewer is like trying to rationalize why a joke makes someone laugh, or the whole “writing about music is like dancing about architecture” sort of thing. Talking about Inception can never capture the experience of watching Inception . And that’s what critics do for a living, and cling to as a form of expression. So lamenting the degree to which aggregators denigrate cinematic discourse is slightly hypocritical. We’re really just arguing about where to draw the line.

Ultimately, I think review aggregator sites like Rotten Tomatoes and Metacritic are far more beneficial to informed movie decision-making and discussion than they are detrimental. Here are 4 positive attributes that these types of sites feature.

Is Aliens better than Alien?

One of the seminal rules in the movie industry is that sequels almost always fail to live up to the original. However, there are exceptions to every rule; The Dark Knight, T2, The Godfather Part 2 all proved to do the opposite. However, one of the most hotly contested topics has been whether the sequel to Ridley Scott's iconic horror, Alien, was better than the original. Personally, I always found that Aliens took the concept of the original and just improved on it by showing us the full force of what "the perfect organism" is truly capable of. The action, tension and effects all get heightened to a level that makes Aliens a must-watch film for any sci-fi or film fan in general. What are your thoughts?

Amy Adams is the best actress of her generation

Amy Adams just turned 50, and her acting legacy is already mightily impressive. The six-time Oscar nominee has given us masterful performances in pretty much every genre under the sun; she was a lively princess in Enchanted, the embodiment of virtue in Doubt, a badass working woman in The Fighter, and a tortured soul in Nocturnal Animals. Adams' versatility and willingness to take risks and always defy conventions and expectations make her the best actress of her generation. Her two best performances, as the cerebral linguist Louise Banks in Arrival and the self-harming alcoholic Camille Preaker in Sharp Objects, show not only a remarkable emotional intelligence but an openness to tackle the deepest and often darkest aspects of the human condition. Many other actresses from her generation — Charlize Theron, Kate Winslet, Angelina Jolie, Jessica Chastain — are also absurdly talented, but

But that left me thinking: which TV cancellations are you still mourning? I'll always be a little depressed that Pushing Daisies wasn't given more time to shine, and I'm still going to be sad that Mindhunter and Hannibal were cut off at a certain point, but it really does feel like fewer and fewer shows are getting the opportunity to build an audience these days, and that's disappointing!
