When Geoff Keighley takes the stage at an event like The Game Awards, he doesn’t tend to talk about current events. That’s been a point of frustration for some people over the years who have voiced criticism over how the gaming figurehead uses (or misuses) his platform. As Keighley walked on the stage at this year’s Summer Game Fest, expectations that he’d acknowledge the current layoff crisis in the video game industry were low. Then Keighley delivered the show’s biggest surprise in its first minute.

“This has been a tumultuous and difficult year with company layoffs and studio closures which have disappointed all of us. But there’s also something else happening,” Keighley said to open the show before flipping to a slide showing the top 10 bestselling new games on Steam so far in 2024. The list wasn’t filled with blockbusters; it was topped by surprise success stories like Palworld, Balatro, and Manor Lords.

Fable finally got a big blowout trailer showing off some gameplay during the Xbox Games Showcase. It still does not have a firm release date, however.

Fable was first announced back in 2020, and since then fans have been chomping at the bit for any new information. After another yearly check-in with Fable, developed by Playground Games, we now know the game is set to release in 2025.

The next Xbox Games Showcase finally took place, and it was an important one for Microsoft. As we hit the midway point of a tumultuous year that has been full of layoffs, studio closures, and the genesis of a multiplatform approach that had divided the fan base, we have learned that Xbox has a lot of neat-looking games coming later this year and into 2025. Highlights include known games like Avowed and Indiana Jones and The Great Circle, as well as newly announced titles like Doom: The Dark Ages and Gears of War: E-Day.

Microsoft showed off a lot, so to help you keep track of everything revealed, we put together this roundup of everything announced during the 2024 Xbox Games Showcase.

Spider-Man 2 and Bungie’s Marathon headlined the event

by Nicole Carpenter

Peter Parker Spider-Man in Venom symbiote suit and Miles Morales spider-man in Spider-Man 2 gameplay trailer at PlayStation Showcase

Sony announced an hours-worth of news focused on the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation VR 2 release schedule in a PlayStation Showcase on Wednesday . The show included new games from PlayStation Studios as well as third-party and indie game developers.

Plenty was announced during the event, including a bunch of PlayStation VR 2 titles, the Metal Gear Solid 3 remake , Bungie’s new game Marathon , and a bevy of indie games. Of course, Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man 2 headlined the event, giving us a closer look at the anticipated follow-up to its earlier Spidey titles.

Looking to catch up? We’ve got you.

Haven Studios, led by Jade Raymond, announced its first game, Fairgame$ , was the first game showcased at the PlayStation Showcase on Wednesday. PlayStation acquired the studio in March of last year. The teaser trailer didn’t show much gameplay, but focused on the game’s steal-from-the-rich vibes.

Helldivers 2

Next up in the showcase was Helldivers 2 from Arrowhead, a follow-up to the 2015 top-down shooter game. It’s coming to PlayStation 5 and Windows PC in 2023, and appears to keep the series’ original style of humor.

Immortals of Aveum

From Electronic Arts and Ascendant Studios, Immortals of Aveum is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and Windows PC on July 20. The new trailer shown Wednesday gave us a look into both story and gameplay elements in the lead-up to its summer release date.

Ghostrunner 2

Ghostrunner 2 , published by 505 Games and One More Level, was announced early on in the PlayStation Showcase. It’s expected out this year on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X, bringing action-forward first-person platforming to the new generation of consoles.

Phantom Blade 0

Phantom Blade 0 , from S-GAME, looks to be full of fast-paced, swords-based combat. No release date was given, but blood was shed.

Sword of the Sea

Sword of the Sea is from the developer of Abzu and The Pathless , and looks like a chill journey — literally, like Journey , but with skateboarding.

The Talos Principle 2

The Talos Principle 2 is expected out this year, a follow-up to the critically-acclaimed The Talos Principle , which was released in 2014. The series is known for its use of philosophy and puzzles to create something truly unique.

Nomada, the developer behind Gris , is working on a beautiful game starring a swordfighter and a white wolf with antlers — and looks to be a serious heartbreaker, judging from the trailer. It’s heading to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X in 2024.

Square Enix’s colorful shooter Foamstars promises like a huge foam party, with play clearly inspired by Splatoon .

The Plucky Squire

The Plucky Squire , published by Devolver Digital, is a super cute storybook game.

Teardown , like its name suggests, is all about breaking stuff. The voxel chaos, already out on PC, is coming to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X this year.

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

Konami announced its Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake , known as Metal Gear Solid Δ , with a watery trailer. It’s coming to PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.

Towers of Aghasba

Towers of Aghasba is about restoring a beautiful, lush world — and, bonus, there are space whales.

Final Fantasy 16

Final Fantasy 16 ’s latest story trailer debuted at the PlayStation Showcase on Wednesday ahead of its June 22 release date.

Alan Wake 2

Alan Wake 2 , from Remedy Entertainment, is coming to PlayStation 5 and Windows PC on Oct. 17. It’s the highly-anticipated follow-up to Alan Wake , which was released way back in 2010.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage

Assassin’s Creed Mirage is out on Oct. 12, Ubisoft announced during the PlayStation Showcase. The game stars Basim, and takes place before the events of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla , a game that he plays a significant role in.

Revenant Hill

Worker-owned cooperative The Glory Society announced Revenant Hill . The trailer was just a teaser, but the developer shared more information about the game — which has a similar aesthetic to Night in the Woods, which was created by the studios’ co-founders — in a blog on PlayStation website . Revenant Hill stars a cat named Twigs and the community that surrounds him.

Dragon’s Dogma 2

Capcom showed off Dragon’s Dogma 2 during the PlayStation Showcase. There were lots of dragons and a lil’ dogma.

Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil 4 is coming to PlayStation VR 2. No release date was given.

One of the more exciting prospects from the PlayStation Showcase is Marathon , Destiny 2 creator Bungie’s new, colorful shooter. Name sound familiar? That’s because Bungie published Marathon originally in 1994 on Mac.

Something called Concord is coming to PlayStation 5 in 2024, but the trailer didn’t give us much to work with. Looks colorful.

Gran Turismo

Gran Turismo is a movie now, coming in August. But... it’s about kids who play Gran Turismo . Twist. Expect lots of shiny cars.

Sony will release its own remote play-based handheld device, currently dubbed Project Q at the company. Basically, it’s a DualSense controller with an 8-inch screen in the middle. The device is expected out later this year.

PlayStation earbuds

What better to go with your new Sony handheld than some PlayStation earbuds?

Spider-Man 2

Kraven the Hunter kicked off Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man 2 trailer , showing the big bad guy. But one of the coolest thing is a Grand Theft Auto 5 -style character switch, letting the player change from Peter Parker to Miles Morales.

Correction: The original version of this story misidentified the developer behind the game Neva, and has been updated to correct that.

Summer Electronic Games Entertainment Fest Expo —

E3 2023 books its physical venue, schedule—and confirms new fan-friendly twist, reading between the lines about what post-covid e3 will look like..

Sam Machkovech - Sep 26, 2022 7:28 pm UTC

It's baaaaaaack!

The annual gaming expo once known as E3 is finally drawing closer toward rebirth as a physical event. While information about the next iteration of E3 remains scarce, this week's big news suggests a crucial change in how the decades-old event will work: a split between audience types.

The expo's new showrunners at ReedPOP, an agency responsible for regional gaming and comic expos like PAX, EGX, and Star Wars Celebration, confirmed on Monday that E3 2023 has locked down its location and date range. Both should sound familiar to E3 fans: a week-long span in mid-June (specifically, June 13–16) at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

This time, E3 will better resemble overseas game-industry showcases like Gamescom and Tokyo Games Show. The event's first two days, dubbed "E3 Business Days," will exclusively host "registered industry personnel," which ReedPOP says will include game makers, distributors, licensors, and press. E3 2023's third day will function as a hybrid industry/public day, and the fourth will be exclusively open to public ticket purchases. During this two-day span of "E3 Gamer Days," the event will host a theater full of "deep-dive looks at highly anticipated titles."

Maybe this one will be fun for average showgoers

Based on our years of E3 coverage, we imagine this structure will be a net positive for anyone who attends. In the expo's pre-COVID state, E3 primarily connected game publishers and developers with the industry's logistics side: your Targets, Amazons, and Best Buys, along with global distribution partners, digital services, and other firms that get video games into players' hands one way or another. At the E3 of old, those people were the priority, not average consumer attendees or even the press.

Yet the ESA's version of E3 sold tickets to a fanbase that had come to expect gaming expos to be fun. Typically, that wasn't the case, thanks largely to brutal waits in lines for limited numbers of gameplay kiosks—all while industry professionals waltzed past velvet ropes to skip those lines. Splitting those audiences should clear out more space for fans to actually play demos of anticipated games. ReedPOP's announcement about a theater portion also suggests that it wants to streamline public access to "exclusive" game presentations at the show—instead of making fans wait in E3 lines just to watch behind-closed-door videos.

As of press time, we still have questions about how the show will operate. Will the attendance split between industry members and public consumers be reflected by a show floor change once E3 Business Days give way to E3 Gamer Days? Meaning, will the show's third and fourth days add more public gameplay kiosks for unreleased games? Also, ReedPOP's other expos are largely marked by third-party merch booths (i.e., clothing, "mystery boxes," and retro game resellers). Will that ReedPOP status quo spill over into their version of E3, despite those booths arguably missing the point of E3's industry-exclusive days? (Representatives for ReedPOP did not immediately answer Ars Technica's questions on these matters.)

But who will actually be at E3 2023?

Most of all, E3 is defined by the video game developers and publishers who present there, but even before COVID forced the show's physical incarnation to halt, major publishers had begun bowing out of the show to emphasize their own physical and digital events. Without formal confirmation of participating publishers at this point, we're left reading various industry-event tea leaves.

Further Reading

What's more, Game Awards and Summer Game Fest organizer Geoff Keighley, who was affiliated with some of this year's Gamescom events, is moving forward with a physical version of Summer Game Fest 2023. As a longtime behind-the-scenes organizer of E3-adjacent events, Keighley may flex his savviness with major game publishers to fill out his own show floor in June 2023—and leave the new version of E3 starved for content. SGF 2023's dates, venue, and participating game makers are still unknown as of press time, but already, we are anticipating a showdown in one way or another for fans' June 2023 game-preview bandwidth, both online and in person.

Our question is: given how good Insomniac's first bite at the Spider-Man cherry was a few years back, is it even possible for number 2 to raise the bar higher still? We hope so, but time will tell in any event.

7 Upcoming Video Game Conventions in 2023–2024

Ashley_Buckwell

Video game conventions offer gamers the opportunity to play new games, hear the latest details about upcoming titles, and get hands-on experience with newly developed consoles, devices, and peripherals. Gaming conventions are also exciting events for developers, hardware manufacturers, and vendors, as they provide a platform to connect in-person with their customers and industry counterparts. In this article, we cover the top 7 upcoming video game conventions to get ready for in 2023–2024.

7 Must See Video Game Conventions in 2023-2024

1) gamescom : august 23–27, 2023.

Located in Germany, gamescom is the world’s biggest consumer video game convention, attracting gamers, developers, and gaming hardware manufacturers from all over the gaming and entertainment sector. The excitement generated by this event generally resembles that of a festival, with the event featuring cosplay activities, esports tournaments, stage shows, panels, and other exciting goings-on.

In last year’s hybrid in-person and digital event, gamescom hosted 1100 exhibitors and 265,000 in-person visitors from more than 100 countries. Exhibitors included the usual lineup of global market leaders, such as Warner Bros, Epic Games, and Microsoft. An even larger number of people attended online: Opening Night Live had 12 million views, and overall, the entire show program had 130 million views.

This year, attendees have been invited to, “get up close and personal with the latest gaming trends and innovations. Play the newest games, meet developers and publishers, and connect with your community.” Attendees can either attend the event in Cologne or experience it digitally.

Attendees can expect to enjoy the following favorites at gamescom 2023:

  • Opening Night Live: Hosted by Geoff Keighley, this entertaining stream includes a number of hotly anticipated game announcements.
  • Indie Arena Booth: An open home for independent game developers.
  • Cosplay Village: Cosplayers, artists, music, and show acts perform on the community stage.

2) PAX West : September 1–4, 2023

Players at PAX West playing a tabletop war game.

Several PAX conventions are held each year at various locations across North America and in Australia. Starting out as the Penny Arcade Expo and having its first run in 2003, PAX showcases all the new major console games and the latest gaming technologies, with a focus on tabletop, independent, and arcade games.

The West Coast edition of PAX will be going ahead this year in September at the Seattle Convention Center and will include the full lineup of activities. Make sure you don’t miss out on the exciting community experience, and of course these main features:

  • PAX Rising Showcase: An intensely curated collection of games selected by the PAX Team and highlighted on the show floor.
  • PAX Arena: The official Esports stage where top-tier combatants from around the world compete.
  • Omegathon: A tournament in which twenty participants randomly selected from the audience compete for a grand prize. Omegathon can have competitors playing anything from Halo to Tetris.

3) Tokyo Game Show : September 21–24, 2023

Tokyo Game Show 2023

The Tokyo Game Show remains one of the top gaming shows in the world. The large-scale show has booths from all the major game publishers, console makers, and mobile gaming platforms, with a few indies and international booths thrown in as well. The Tokyo Game Show runs over four days: the first two days are open exclusively to industry professionals, and the last two days allow gamers and other members of the public to join in.

Despite the difficulty getting into Japan due to lingering COVID-19 restrictions, large numbers of both Japanese and international publishers, developers, and gamers managed to attend the Tokyo Game Show last year at the Makuhari Messe convention center, with a total of 138,912 visitors attending the show. One of the most elaborate booths at the event was for the Steam Deck , the handheld gaming device for PC games that was created by Valve Corporation.

The upcoming edition of the Tokyo Game Show has been touted as the event’s biggest so far. The organizers are planning on making use of every one of the venue’s halls, something that has not been done for quite some time. The Tokyo Game Show VR experience , which is an online feed of the event that can be watched normally or in VR, will also make its appearance this year, marking the third year in a row that interested individuals who were unable to attend can still experience the excitement after the in-person event’s conclusion.

4) BlizzCon : November 3–4, 2023

BlizzCon is a convention at which Blizzard Entertainment exclusively showcases its upcoming products and provides important announcements to fans. The convention gathers fans in a celebration of Blizzard culture and fandom. Despite featuring the work of only one company, BlizzCon typically brings in crowds of 40,000 people. In addition to hearing exciting news announcements, fans get to demonstrate their dedication to the game worlds they love through art, cosplay, and digital storytelling contests. A concert is usually held at the end of the convention, and it usually includes some big-name performances.

BlizzCon will take place this year at the Anaheim Convention Center in Los Angeles, returning with the full in-person format of the event after a three-year absence. Anticipated announcements at the event include details on the next expansion for World of Warcraft and an official reveal of Blizzard’s new, as-yet unannounced survival MMO game . Hearthstone and World of Warcraft are also due for expansions, so announcements related to those games are expected.

5) The Game Awards : December 2023

The Game Awards Trophy Design from 2022

Technically not a convention, but still a gathering of passionate gamers and developers, the Game Awards is an annual event that recognizes outstanding achievements in the video game industry. The event is widely considered the most prestigious awards show for developers and publishers, and last year’s event had 103 million viewers. Hosted and produced by Geoff Keighley, who also hosts Opening Night Live at the annual gamescom conference, the Game Awards is supported by an advisory board that consists of industry-leading advisers from companies including Epic Games, Nintendo, Rockstar Games, Sony, Tencent, Ubisoft, and Valve.

This year, the Game Awards celebrates its 10-year anniversary. The show is expected to take place on the first Thursday in December at the Microsoft Center in Los Angeles, which has been its home for the last few years. This year has seen the release of several amazing games, including Hogwarts Legacy , Diablo IV , Star Wars Jedi: Survivor , and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom . These games will all be vying for the title of 2023 Game of the Year.

6) Game Developers Conference : March 18–22, 2024

Main stage at Game Developers Conference.

The Game Developers Conference draws together approximately 28,000 attendees each year from the game development community for five days of education, inspiration, and networking. The event showcases the latest game development tools and services from leading technology companies, such as Amazon, Google, Intel, Microsoft, Nvidia, Oculus, Sony, and Epic Games.

Highlights of the Game Developers Conference include GDC Play, where you can play games from emerging and independent developers, and alt.ctrl.GDC, where you try out innovative alternative controllers and meet the developers behind them.

Who goes to GDC?

  • Programmers
  • Producers
  • Game designers
  • Audio professionals
  • Business leaders

7) PAX East : March 21–24, 2024

PAX East crowded convention hall.

PAX East is the premiere PAX event and the biggest gaming convention on the East Coast. As with all PAX conventions, at this event, attendees can expect to see several upcoming big-name and independent video games, as well as enjoy discussion panels, musical performances, and fun tournaments. In contrast to PAX Unplugged conventions, which focus on tabletop gaming, PAX East is dedicated primarily to electronic gaming of all types: console, PC, VR, and other media.

In 2024, PAX East will be held as usual at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in Massachusetts. Following on from the success of the 2023 event, expect the halls at PAX East 204 to be filled to the brim with gamers from all over the world celebrating the world of gaming.

Video game conventions have evolved into celebrations of technology and drivers of economic growth, consistently drawing in hundreds of thousands of attendees. Although even renowned and longstanding conventions may eventually be discontinued ( we do not expect E3 to return ), new events are gradually established that fill the gap, and the quality and scope of the conventions that are held each year stand as a testament to the gaming community’s dedication to sharing their passion for gaming and their knowledge about all things gaming-related.

11 major predictions for video games in 2023

2023 video games predictions nintendo mario switch

Image: Nintendo

Video games are set for a massive year in 2023, between blockbuster new releases, industry developments, rising trends, company pivots, and grand ambitions. While game developers tend to hold their cards close to their chest, we already know plenty about what’s coming in 2023 , thanks to several years of delays, and long development cycles for current generation consoles. That said, there’s always a certain level of unpredictability for the video game industry, with global and economic circumstances largely shaping what is and isn’t possible.

In a discussion about the year ahead, the GamesHub team has come together to gaze into the crystal ball of the future, and predict exactly what’s in store, from surprise video game sequels and franchise returns, to potential challenges along the way. Our predictions chart a wild course for the future – sometimes realistic, sometimes hopeful – where all our video game dreams may finally be released.

These are GamesHub’s biggest video games industry predictions for 2023.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury gets a surprise sequel

No switch pro 4k for 2023, netflix launches games on consoles and pc, vampires are in, space horror is out, e3 2023 is the final nail in the coffin.

  • Studios stop announcing long tail release dates

Square Enix changes hands

Xbox announces a major vr device, microsoft’s activision blizzard deal slips into 2024, castlevania returns, but not under konami, the steam deck finally launches in australia.

video game presentations 2023

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury was a big surprise when it launched for Nintendo Switch in 2021. Not only did the pack contain an impressive remaster of one of the Wii U’s best games, it also introduced a riveting side chapter – the standalone Bowser’s Fury . In this adventure, players roam free in a wide open world collecting trinkets, and attempting to avoid an overpowered Bowser as he haunts you across the skyline.

It’s gorgeous, colourful, and one of the most innovative experiences Nintendo has ever released. Post-launch, it appeared to herald a new era for the Mario franchise. Yet in the end, it was never expanded into a larger experience. In 2023, we predict the long wait to hear more about Bowser’s Fury will end.

After the dust settles on The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom , Nintendo fans will look to the future. In a perfect world, a sequel in the mould of Bowser’s Fury would be on the horizon.

nintendo switch game

Complaints about the hardware performance capability of the Nintendo Switch have grown over the last few years – particularly in the wake of titles like Bayonetta 3 and Pokemon Violet/Scarlet , which all suffered from issues with texture pop-in, slow loading, and muddy textures. Despite this, we predict 2023 won’t feature the debut or announcement of the long-rumoured ‘Switch Pro’ capable of 4K graphics and heartier performance.

The economic circumstances aren’t right. The global manufacturing circumstances aren’t right. People have less expendable income as cost of living pressures mount, and there’s a general sense of uncertainty in the air. Plus, it’s clear that plenty of people are still happy to purchase the currently available models.

There’ll be plenty for existing Switch owners to enjoy in 2023 regardless, including blockbusters like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. This should tide everyone over until Nintendo – and the global economy – is ready for a new console.

poinpy netflix games predictions video games 2023

Netflix forged a blazing path into the video games industry in 2022, launching a robust library of original and upgraded games for mobile devices – including the addictive, heart-stealing Poinpy , and surprise sequel Reigns: Three Kingdoms . It also took ownership of the mobile ports for Immortality , Into the Breach , Desta: The Memories Between , Kentucky Route Zero , and plenty of other essential video game titles. Netflix has seemingly hand-picked its mobile library, with an eye for quality and endearing indie hits.

In 2023, we predict the company will expand its ambitions again, launching its mobile offerings on other platforms, first on PC, and then on consoles. With its vast library of partners, a number of standalone studios on board , and ambitions to claim more space in the industry, it’s likely Netflix will begin a major publishing push everywhere video games can be found. In fact, they’ve also already formed an in-house studio to make a PC multiplayer shooter .

video games predictions 2023 vampires

Space horror became high fashion in 2021 and 2022, thanks to a range of spooky, slimy hits like Returnal , The Callisto Protocol , Dolmen, and GTFO . This resulted in a veritable wave of similar games, some of which are planned to launch in 2023 – the Dead Space remake, the mystery PS5 exclusive nicknamed ‘Ooze’ , Scars Above, System Shock, and more. But as in Hollywood, trends tend to wax and wane – and space horror is likely to be on the outs as we head towards the end of 2023.

Read: The best vampire video games of all bloody time

We predict it will be replaced by a return of the vampire genre – heralded by the arrival of adventure games like Evil West , Gungrave G.O.R.E , and Redfall . While we wouldn’t be so bold as to say 2023 will play host to the return of the long-embattled Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 , anticipation for this title (and the excitement of Redfall ) could contribute to a vampire genre resurrection.

e3 2023 june details

It’s fair to say the pandemic has reshaped what we expect from video game events , and how we engage with them. This is riding against the relaunch of E3, which returns to a hybrid in-person and online format in 2023.

The rise in competition, the loss of support from major companies, and the subsequent scattering of video game announcements have all contributed to a surprising loss of interest in E3 as a mainstream gaming event. In the past, video game announcements arrived all at once in the middle of the year, with announcements and major showcases being corralled into one physical space. Since the pandemic, video games are more commonly shown off during individual developer summits, and online presentations that occur all year around.

The Game Awards host and creator Geoff Keighley has also essentially slipped the rug out from under E3 in recent years, establishing smaller conventions and celebrations that are far more palatable and accessible to global, online audiences than E3 itself. While the convention does have new blood on board, in the form of PAX organisers ReedPop , the enthusiasm for the event may have already waned.

In 2023, E3’s days feel numbered. The future success of the convention will depend heavily on this year’s show – which could be a major pivot point for organisers.

Studios stop announcing long-tail release dates

naughty dog new games crunch

Video game delays became common in 2020, 2021, and 2022, thanks to three long years of pandemic conditions. Workers got sick. Developer pipelines became clogged. Suddenly, release dates lost their value as games were delayed again, and again. Patient fans remained happy to wait, with the understanding that a delayed video game becomes better in every sense. But those release dates were a bugbear that hamstrung developers, and created false expectations across the board.

Video games are extremely complex to make, and even the most talented teams can’t predict the future. This may lead to unrealistic expectations, which in turn breeds crunch conditions. By refusing to label games and only announcing release dates (or entire games) with the certainty of near completion, developers will be able to better plan their upcoming releases, and allay fan concerns.

No release dates, no delays. It’s simple. We predict that in 2023, this approach will become king – with shorter marketing cycles, and more freedom behind the scenes contributing to better games made under kinder circumstances. Developer Naughty Dog recently announced a similar approach to detailing its upcoming releases , and we expect other developers to follow suit.

final fantasy xvi square enix 2023 games

Square Enix has had an odd few years, with the company’s typically stellar releases bogged down by odd decisions along the way – like a concerted push into the NFT and blockchain space, as other developers reckoned with these controversial technologies and found them inappropriate and unwanted by their audience . Ubisoft made the boldest leap into this arena, but seemingly dipped out when it recognised the damage its ‘ research ‘ had done to audience goodwill.

In complete opposition, Square Enix has doubled down – announcing projects like Symbiogenesis , a story-based NFT project that has already generated major fan backlash and disappointment. While the company survives on the strength of its existing video game franchises ( Final Fantasy , Kingdom Hearts ), failures in new experiments may reduce the company’s profitability.

Should it continue to double down on blockchain and NFT technologies, against the vast majority of its fanbase’s interests and global sentiment, it could be ripe for a takeover or purchase by one of gaming’s ‘big dogs’. Embracer Group recently purchased a vast number of studios from Square Enix . In 2023, the entire company could go the same way.

Sony PlayStation may also have a stake, as a frequent partner of the studio.

While it could also stay independent, something at Square Enix has to give. After years of reporting non-profitability for its many studios , it’s likely that change is coming for Square Enix in 2023.

video games predictions 2023 xbox

Microsoft will likely be occupied in 2023 (and more on that shortly) but its technology divisions at Xbox could be working on something big . While rival Sony has already taken a big leap into VR technology, first releasing the PlayStation VR and then announcing a follow-up device in the form of the PlayStation VR 2 , Xbox does not yet have competing tech. There are no Xbox VR games.

This is despite the company previously being a pioneer in mixed reality, motion controls, and innovative experiments. The Xbox Kinect , for example, was a bold creation that allowed for new forms of entertainment. But despite taking risks with accessories in the past, the company has had a seeming reluctance to invest in modern tech like VR.

In 2023, Microsoft would be perfectly positioned to surprise-announce their own foray into the emerging VR space – in direct competition with Sony’s PlayStation VR2, set to launch in February. While this may split the company’s focus, a new VR device would also provide another selling point for the Xbox Series X/S and create intrigue for the future of Xbox games.

activision blizzard microsoft 2024

Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard continues to cause a massive furore in the wider games industry . After several months of being investigated by the UK Competition and Markets Authority and the US Federal Trade Commission, it appears no closer to being approved or denied. Legislative processes take time, but it appears the scope of this deal is so unprecedented that investigators have required delays to comprehend every detail.

While the CMA was expected to hand down a verdict in March 2023, this has now been delayed by nearly two months – and the FTC investigation could suffer a similar fate. Even if the deal is approved by the CMA in its current timeframe, Microsoft still needs to trundle through the similarly rigorous FTC investigation, which isn’t due for a verdict until August 2023.

Should this timeline blow out, it could be 2024 before we know more about the deal. Essentially, don’t expect any Microsoft and Activision Blizzard collaborations (a new Crash Bandicoot, more Spyro , etc.) any time soon.

castlevania god of war ragnarok

For many years now, developer Konami has celebrated the past of its classic video games ( Castlevania, Metal Gear Solid ) without much thought for their future. There was, however, a new glimmer of hope for the company at The Game Awards 2022, where it was announced that Motion Twins’ Dead Cells would be getting a Castlevania -themed DLC chapter in 2023 . Not only did this announcement mark a major franchise return, it also revealed something essential: that Konami is now willing to lend the Castlevania IP to new developers.

We predict that in 2023, this move will be taken a step further – with a third-party, non-Konami developer announcing a new entry in the mainline Castlevania series. God of War Ragnarok director Eric Williams recently expressed interest in exploring the franchise, unprompted. Why not take Williams and Santa Monica Studio up on the offer? While contracts and details are likely complex, this should happen – if it hasn’t already. Konami certainly isn’t opposed to the idea, with the company lending its Silent Hill property out to developers for several new projects.

Expect big things from Castlevania in 2023 – and not in the form of NFTs (which we predict will disappear from video games entirely this year, god willing.)

steam deck valve production

The Steam Deck launched near-globally in 2022, with production bottlenecks finally cleared and manufacturing capacity remaining strong throughout the year. Despite this, you still can’t get a Steam Deck in Australia, New Zealand, and other select regions. Countless PC gaming enthusiasts have taken to Twitter and other social media platforms to bully Valve into making the console available everywhere – to no avail. But in 2023, this will likely change.

With the majority of global orders, including recent reservations in Asia, now handled, there are high hopes Valve will turn its attention to making the Steam Deck available for everyone. Given local e-commerce companies like Kogan, Amazon, and Catch are now importing the console to circumvent Valve’s odd regional block, it’s likely the company eventually acquiesce to fan requests for easier and more reliable access.

We predict that in 2023, we’ll finally get the local Steam Deck release we desperately desire.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 , The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, and Final Fantasy XVI.

2023 would be a notable year for video games on the strength of a Tears of the Kingdom release alone. But that The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild follow-up isn't the only massive title delayed by the pandemic to have a credible release date in the coming months. Here are the games our staff most look forward to, in order of when they (should) come out.

Fire Emblem Engage (January 20th)

I played Fire Emblem: Three Houses twice all the way through, savoring each character's dialogue and obsessively tracking their relationships with each other. This entry looks more brash and candy-colored, but if it delivers the tactical depth and quality cast I'm hoping for, I'll be well-engaged indeed. - James Mastromarino, Join the Game editor and Here & Now producer

Forspoken (January 24th)

It's been a long time since Square Enix debuted a brand new IP, and I'm hoping Forspoken will bring a fresh twist to the action RPG genre. It's developed by Luminous Productions, which was assembled from the team that worked on Final Fantasy XV — a game I loved for its beautiful environments, snappy gameplay, and overall charm. Forspoken also gathered formidable writing and soundtrack talent, including Bear McCreary, who just won Best Score and Music at The Game Awards for God of War Ragnarök . Amy Hennig, one of the main writers, lead the 150-person team behind the legendary Uncharted 2: Among Thieves . Long story short, Forspoken has a lot going for it, and if it all comes together, I'll have a great time playing it. - Andy Bickerton, Senior Digital Analyst

Dead Space (January 27)

Dead Space upped the game for space survival horror all the way back in 2008. With visual enhancements and other quality of life improvements, I can only hope this remake of Isaac Clarke's harrowing journey lives up to the original. - Bryant Denton, Grove Support Associate for Member Partnership

Season: A letter to the future bills itself as an "atmospheric adventure bicycle road trip game."

The games I've been playing lately are far from peaceful. Biking around while quietly documenting a pre-apocalyptic, Miyazaki-esque landscape sounds like a nice vibe to kick off the new year. -Justin Lucas, Director, Communications and Audience Relations

Hogwarts Legacy (February 10)

Many Harry Potter fans soured on J. K. Rowling's Wizarding World after the author started loudly defending her transphobic views . Despite calls for a boycott, Hogwarts Legacy has already climbed the sales charts ahead of its release. The game presents an intoxicating escape to a magical place entire generations grew up with — and while Hogwarts Legacy explicitly allows you to play as a transgender character — time will only tell how fun and inclusive it really is. - James Mastromarino, Join the Game editor and Here & Now producer

Horizon Call of the Mountain (February 22)

Horizon Call of the Mountain gives you a first-person view of its hulking dinosaur-robots.

Horizon Call of the Mountain is a launch title for Playstation's VR 2, a headset that promises to go toe-to-toe with beefy hardware like the Valve Index. If Call of the Wild can make you "feel" like you're in Horizon 's robot dinosaur-filled world, then maybe PSVR2's $550 price tag might just be worth it. - James Delahoussaye, TED Radio Hour Producer

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty (March 3)

The success of Elden Ring will probably put wind behind other studios' Souls -like titles and I'm here for it. Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty 's trailer includes a nod to FromSoft's Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, and will likely build off of the Team Ninja's own Nioh titles (which may not have been GOTY material, but were very enjoyable). Plus, there will be co-op! - Justin Lucas, Director, Communications and Audience Relations

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor (March 17)

2019's Fallen Order offered a great cast and story. The combat and exploration didn't quite hit the highs of the games that clearly inspired it ( Dark Souls and Uncharted ), but Fallen Order laid a promising foundation for Survivor to build on. Give me more force powers! -James Delahoussaye, TED Radio Hour Producer

Resident Evil 4 (March 24)

I fell head over heels for the series' trademark schlock and mayhem over the pandemic — and I look forward to seeing the beloved Resident Evil 4 get the meticulous remake treatment that so improved Residents Evil 2 and 3 . It's sure to be gorgeous and gorey — and I hope it preserves the campy spirit of the original voice-acting too. - James Mastromarino, Join the Game editor and Here & Now producer

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom (May 12)

The many floating isles of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

I'm not the most experienced gamer, but I've spent 560+ hours playing Breath of the Wild over the past two years. I've found most of the Korok Seeds, solved most of the shrines and completed most of the quests. I still scream in fear when I encounter a Lynel in the world, and can still taste the accomplishment and empowerment I felt when I beat my first one. If Tears of the Kingdom gives me more of that feeling, I'll be entertained for years to come. -Natalia Fidelholtz, Talent Development Manager

Diablo 4 (June 6)

In a world where angels and demons run rampant, Actvision Blizzard offers a big-budget return to the dungeon crawling series that kicked off in 1997. While critics cried foul at the monetization trickery behind 2022's Diablo Immortal , Diablo 4 could restore the franchise to its glory days. - Bryant Denton, Grove Support Associate for Member Partnership

Final Fantasy XVI (June 22)

Final Fantasy XVI features intense magical duels.

Final Fantasy XVI could be a return to form for the franchise while also taking the storied RPG series to new heights. It's the first mainline title to receive a Mature rating, and its trailers have drawn comparisons to Game of Thrones , but with the series' memorable monster summons taking center stage. It's sure to be the blockbuster gaming event of the summer, and I'm looking forward to immersing myself in yet another breathtaking fantasy world from the imaginative minds at Square Enix. - Lindsay Totty, Morning Edition Producer

Starfield (Undated 2023)

I obsessed over Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and Fallout 4 when they first came out. I've beaten them a dozen times combined, with hundreds of hours played. While their engine and mechanics now feel dated, developer Bethesda promises a whole new upgrade for Starfield . I love open-world games, so the promise of over a thousand planets to explore has me hopeful it'll be just as immersive as Bethesda's other titles. -Adam Winters, Quality Assurance Manager

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 (Undated 2023)

Insomniac Games revolutionized web-slinging with 2018 and followed up that feat with a Miles Morales story that had all the flare and personality we can expect from his take on Spider-Man. I'm hyped to see this sequel bring both Peter Parker and Miles together against the comic's most beloved villains. - Jamal Michel, It's Been a Minute Intern

A scene from Armored Core VI: Fires of Rubicon' s first trailer, which debuted at The Game Awards 2022.

I haven't played any of the previous games in FromSoft's giant robot series, but I'm looking forward to checking out Armored Core VI Fires of Rubicon this year. I trust anything the studio puts out: I was blown away by the first Dark Souls when I picked it up in 2012 (around when the last installment of Armored Core was released) and have enjoyed every game they've made since. While Fires of Rubicon feels like a departure from the studio's most recent work, I still look forward to dying a bunch — this time in a mech suit. -Justin Lucas, Director, Communications and Audience Relations

AEW Fight Forever (Undated 2023)

When a wrestler (Kenny Omega) who loves video games is helping oversee the production of a wrestling game, I can't help but be intrigued. Omega is a huge fan of the Fire Pro Wrestling games, considered some of the best in the genre. With previews revealing an engine that runs similar to 2000's classic WWF No Mercy , there's a chance this could be the best wrestling game of the year. - Matt Adams, Audience Engagement Supervisor

Coffee Talk Episode 2: Hibiscus & butterfly (Undated 2023)

Toge Productions' Coffee Talk was my favorite game of 2020. Two years later, I'm still replaying it because the characters, story and music are so good! I can't wait to see where they go with Hibiscus & Butterfly in 2023. - Rakiesha Chase-Jackson, Member Partnership Project Manager

Redfall (Undated 2023)

Redfall features a colorful cast of characters and cooperative combat against vampiric enemies.

Arkane Studios has helmed GOTY contenders for years. It surprised no one that Redfall drew hella praise for its 2021 reveal trailer alone. It had an audacious and diverse cast, as well as a horrifying display of vampiric enemies in the titular Redfall, Massachusetts. Stan Layla Ellison! - Jamal Michel, It's Been a Minute Intern

Stellar Blade (Undated 2023)

Stellar Blade (formerly titled Project EVE ) is a futuristic hack-and-slash announced at the PlayStation showcase in 2021. Although details have been sparse, the gameplay previews show off stunning visuals and fast paced combat in a new IP. - Bryant Denton, Grove Support Associate for Member Partnership

The Wolf Among Us 2 (Undated 2023)

I've been waiting since 2014 for Telltale Games to release a sequel to The Wolf Among Us . I loved the Fables comics it was based on and the original game provided such an engaging way to interact with those characters. Nearly a decade later and after the studio's collapse and revival , I can't wait to get back to Fabletown. -Rakiesha Chase-Jackson, Member Partnership Project Manager

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chernobyl (Undated 2023)

S.T.A.L.K.E.R. has always been hard to sum up: a cult-favorite, magically-real, survival horror, first-person shooter series, loosely based on a 1979 Tarkovsky movie? The game's development had stuttered for years — and then when a release finally looked plausible, the Ukrainian company making it faced a very real war . I hope these incredibly resilient folks have all the time and funding they need, and I'll play whatever they end up shipping. - James Mastromarino, Join the Game editor and Here & Now producer

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (Undated 2023)

2020's Final Fantasy VII Remake opened the door to a radically-new retelling of the 1997 original. The sequel, Rebirth, will likely depart even further — but it's also likely to get delayed to 2024. - James Mastromarino, Join the Game editor and Here & Now producer

Hollow Knight: Silksong , like its acclaimed predecessor, pits its nimble hero against huge insectoid opponents.

2017's Hollow Knight may be the best Metroidvania ever made — and that includes the Metroid and Castlevania games! That feat is even more impressive since it came from a small indie studio. Silksong looks like it will deliver another beautifully-illustrated and vast world, complete with deep combat and traversal mechanics. Needless to say, there's a lot to look forward to in this sequel — which is rumored to finally come out this year. - Jeff Choi, Product Designer

Hades II (Unconfirmed)

Hades II should get an early access release this year and it's hard to overestimate my expectations for it. I fell in love with the first game for the same reasons as everyone else: the sumptuous art, rich mythology, finely-tuned combat... and obviously, the romance! Hades II has already promised almost all that and more (though I haven't seen any romancing yet). There's still plenty we don't know about our new protagonist Melinoë and the band of gods, witches, and miscellaneous creatures who will join her, but what we have seen looks like a perfect second invitation to the underworld. - Megan Lim, All Things Considered Producer

Summer gaming events 2023: with E3 canceled, here’s what’s next

By Jay Peters , a news editor who writes about technology, video games, and virtual worlds. He’s submitted several accepted emoji proposals to the Unicode Consortium.

E3 isn’t happening in 2023. It didn’t seem likely after Nintendo said it wouldn’t be there , Microsoft said it would skip the show floor , and Ubisoft committed to going and then backed out. Then on March 30th, organizer ReedPop officially called off the annual gaming convention .

Sadly, I probably won’t get the Silksong release date I was hoping for .

Sony kicked the summer schedule off with its PlayStation event . It showed off footage of Spider-Man 2 and revealed new hardware accessories, including a “Project Q” streaming handheld and a pair of PlayStation earbuds that will both go on sale later this year.

Summer Game Fest 2023 came and went with a slew of new trailers but no women on stage.

Microsoft responded with the Xbox games showcase that featured our best look at Starfield yet, news of a new black 1TB Xbox Series S for $349, as well as other gaming news and trailers for Star Wars: Outlaws, Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade II, Forza Motorsport, Fable, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 , and more.

Here’s all of our coverage of E3’s cancellation and what comes next.

E3 2023 has been canceled

A photo of somebody attending E3.

E3 has been canceled. Gaming’s big summer show was set to return in person in Los Angeles for the first time since 2019, but it’s been called off after huge gaming companies like Nintendo, Microsoft, and Ubisoft all said they wouldn’t be participating in the event.

E3 2023 was scheduled for June 13th through 16th with a mix of industry-focused days and days that would be open to the public. But in the lead-up to June, there had been some worrying signs that things might be rocky for E3’s revival.

E3 continues to fall apart

Illustration of the E3 logo

Plans for E3 2024 have already been in doubt, but now a report from GamesIndustry.biz reveals that the ESA — the trade association behind the event — has dumped its organizer. The ESA has confirmed to The Verge it no longer plans to partner with PAX organizer ReedPop for future E3 events.

While the ESA was supposed to work with ReedPop for E3 this year, things started to fall apart when companies like Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo dropped out of the show . Now GamesIndustry.biz  reports that the ESA and ReedPop have made the “mutual decision” to exit their multiyear deal.

Panic’s first developer showcase had flies, football, and very messy food

Composite image of key art taken from Panic’s publisher showcase featuring a picture of a fly, a soccer ball against a stylistic blue background, and a tower of hamburger components stacked on top of one another.

Today, Panic put on its very first game publisher showcase . The showcase was short but very sweet, featuring some of the most interesting and innovative indie games coming to PlayStation, Xbox, PC, and Switch. Here are all the highlights, including a surprise announcement from the makers of Untitled Goose Game .

Arco comes from an international team of developers, artists, and storytellers. It’s a tactical action game that pits regular people against an all-powerful corporate gang. In the reveal trailer, the diverse landscapes exude so much ecological detail rendered in pixel graphics, and the combat seems like a real-time action game. Arco is due on Steam in 2024.

Stray wanders onto Xbox in August

Stray by Annapurna Interactive

The Not-E3 summer of games is winding down, but it is not over yet. Annapurna Interactive was the latest publisher to put on its own showcase, debuting new games and sharing big updates for others. Here are the highlights from the presentation.

PlayStation’s best play-as-a-ca t game is stray -ing to a new platform. Originally launched last year as a PC / PlayStation timed exclusive, Annapurna Interactive has announced that Stray , the cypberpunk cat-sim, is coming to Xbox on August 10th. Annapurna announced the move in the cutest way possible, with the game’s lead gato pawing an Xbox controller off a table, as its concerned owner stares helpless in the face of the cat’s reckless disregard. The only thing that could be more realistic is if the cat coughed up a hairball in the shape of Xbox’s iconic “X” symbol.

E3 is not returning anytime soon

A photo of the 2019 Electronic Entertainment Expo, also known as E3, opening in Los Angeles, California.

E3 is dead, and it’s not coming back for at least a few more years. According to a report from the Los Angeles City Tourism Commission , E3 won’t be back in LA in 2024 or 2025.

The news was contained in a footnote on a chart highlighting the city’s projected and actual number of hotel rooms booked for fiscal year 2022 and 2023.

Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest is happening again in June 2024 . There will be another big live show (here’s all our coverage of this year’s ) and an in-person Play Days event (which, for the past two years, has been an invite-only event). And I’m guessing “Game Fest” will once again encompass a bunch of summer gaming shows — this year, those included the Xbox Games Showcase , Ubisoft Forward , and Capcom Showcase .

The summer gaming fun isn’t over: there’s an Annapurna Interactive showcase on June 29th , and Keighley will be hosting Gamescom’s Opening Night Live show on August 22nd . (Busy guy!)

Sure, Ubisoft Forward just ended , but there’s still another gaming event today: Capcom is holding its own digital showcase at 3PM PT / 6PM ET. You can check it out on YouTube right here .

Our summer filled with non-E3 gaming events continues today with Ubisoft Forward, which kicks off in around 45 minutes. Here’s how to tune in .

As Summer Game Geoff, aka Keigh3, aka The Keighleys, aka Summer Game Fest 2023 , winds down, there are a few more big developer presentations left, including today’s Ubisoft Forward 2023.

You can watch the livestream on Twitch or YouTube at 1PM ET / 10 AM PT / 6PM BST. Since we’re global here at The Verge , if we haven’t included your timezone, Ubisoft has got you covered, tweeting a bunch more global start times.

Microsoft just wrapped up its annual summer showcase for Xbox games, and it was a big one. Not only did Microsoft share tons of information about new titles coming to Xbox, but the company also showed a long look at Starfield , Bethesda’s long-awaited sci-fi RPG.

Here’s the biggest announcements from the show.

Summer Game Fest featured no women onstage

Screenshot from Summer Game Fest featuring Geoff Keighley and Sam Lake from Remedy Entertainment

With the death of E3 nearly complete, Summer Game Fest has become the go-to summer event for gamers to get hyped about. But this year’s Summer Game Fest, while it featured games that included a wide range of genres and a great diversity of characters, did not feature a single woman onstage.

Throughout the almost two-hour showcase, host Geoff Keighley brought up a number of personalities to interview onstage. He had industry veteran Ed Boon up to talk about Mortal Kombat 1 . Nic Cage made an appearance to talk more about his Dead by Daylight character. Bryan Intihar came on stage to reveal the release date for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 . But not once was a woman given that opportunity.

How to watch Summer Game Fest 2023

A screenshot of Idris Elba’s character in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty.

Summer Game Fest 2023 is nearly here. Geoff Keighley’s major summer gaming event takes place on Thursday, and this year, it might have some special significance. With E3 canceled , gaming companies wanting to show off their latest projects may turn to Summer Game Fest instead, which hopefully means that we’ll see some major news from the show.

There are already a few notable things to look forward to. CD Projekt Red has already said that Cyberpunk 2077 ’s upcoming expansion starring Idris Elba, titled Phantom Liberty , will be playable at the in-person Play Days portion of Summer Game Fest, so I’m guessing it will make an appearance during the live event. Keighley said on Twitter that we’ll see a “world premiere first look” of the new Fortnite season, “Wilds.” And the Summer Game Fest Twitter account has been teasing a “ gameplay reveal ” of Mortal Kombat 1 .

Fresh off the launch of Street Fighter 6 , Capcom has announced that it’s joining the not-E3 frenzy with a showcase event at 6PM ET on June 12th. (That’s just a few hours after Ubisoft’s event on the same day .)

It’s expected to last around 36 minutes, and you can probably expect to see updates on the company’s big franchises, like Resident Evil and Monster Hunter , alongside new titles like the dino shooter Exoprimal . If we’re very lucky, we’ll see a new Ace Attorney .

You can keep up with the increasingly complex web of summer gaming events right here .

Based on this short trailer , it looks as weird as you might expect from a Devolver show.

June 8th is shaping up to be a busy day for video games: Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest is set to take place that same day at 3PM ET .

With E3 shelved, the summer calendar is quickly filling up with gaming showcases big and small , and fans of the Yakuza / Like a Dragon series (the naming depends on where you are) should keep an eye out for this one (via IGN ).

RGG announced Yakuza 8 at last year’s event as a turn-based sequel to Yakuza: Like a Dragon , and we’d expect to see more of the game this time around.

Sony kicked off a summer of gaming events with a bang. The company’s PlayStation Showcase was more than an hour of rapid-fire announcements, surprises, and trailers — including a new piece of hardware. You can catch up on everything that happened right here in our storystream . But if you’re just looking for the biggest news of the day, this is the place.

Sony is making a handheld again, with the 8-inch Project Q. It’s designed for playing your PS5 games remotely and looks like a Nintendo Switch smashed with a DualSense controller. There was other hardware, too: wireless PlayStation earbuds are also in the works .

May 17, 2023

It kicks off at 4PM ET / 1PM ET , meaning it won’t get in the way of Microsoft’s Xbox showcase and Starfield Direct earlier that day . Should be a fun day of gaming news!

Sony is holding an hour-long PlayStation Showcase next week

A PlayStation 5 DualSense controller rests on a PlayStation 5 console.

The summer of gaming events is starting a little early this year. Sony announced that it will be holding a PlayStation Showcase event on May 24th at 1PM PT. And it sounds like a big one: the stream will be more than an hour long and include games for both the PS5 and PS VR2. “Expect a glimpse at several new creations from PlayStation Studios, as well as spellbinding games from our third-party partners and indie creators,” the company says. It’ll stream on both YouTube  and  Twitch .

As for what to expect, Sony has a number of upcoming blockbusters, including the superhero games Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine , while I wouldn’t be surprised to see Death Stranding 2 make an appearance. The announcement also specifies “new IP,” so expect the unexpected as well.

May 11, 2023

E3 may be gone , but Devolver is planning another one of its showcases for June. I expect this one will be just as weird as past shows .

Nintendo Live 2023 starts September 1st in Seattle, and the tickets are free

Nintendo Live 2023 promotional image showing images of Mario Kart, Splatoon, and families playing games, with text showing the event location at the Seattle Convention Center and the dates: September 1st through September 4th.

Nintendo’s next big live event will take place in Seattle this September , and today, the company revealed dates and more details about Nintendo Live 2023 . The event will run from September 1st through September 4th at the Seattle Convention Center and is intended to be an all-ages celebration of Nintendo’s games, as just one of many gaming companies planning events this summer in the shadow of E3 2023’s cancellation.

Nintendo Live 2023 is going to be a free event, and there are two ways to get tickets. You can register in a randomly selected drawing on Nintendo’s website at some point between May 31st and June 22nd, where you could get a one-day pass for a group of up to six people.

Microsoft’s annual Xbox Games Showcase will take place on June 11th at 10AM PT / 1PM ET / 6PM UK. This year it’s focused on Xbox rather than a joint showcase with Bethesda, and that’s because a Starfield Direct will follow immediately after the showcase. Microsoft is promising “new gameplay, developer interviews, and behind-the-scenes insider information” during Bethesda’s Starfield stream.

Mark your calendar for June 11th.

Meta is hosting its next VR gaming show in June

The Verge’s Adi Robertson wearing a Quest 2.

Meta is hosting another gaming showcase for its Quest VR headsets on June 1st, the company announced on Monday. The event will feature “over 40 minutes of content,” according to a blog post , including game announcements, first looks, updates, and a preshow and postshow.

The show will mark Meta’s third annual Quest Gaming Showcase. The 2022 event, which took place in April , featured some pretty cool games, including Resident Evil 4 , Among Us VR , and a new add-on for Beat Saber . Here’s hoping Meta has some good things in store for the event, though some VR fans might still be unhappy that the company is shutting down the widely praised Echo VR .

The Game Awards anniversary concert will have music from Hades, Elden Ring, and more

Key art from The Game Awards 10-year concert featuring a close-up of the Game Awards statue highlighted in a greenish-blue color

Geoff Keighley’s putting on a show. I don’t mean E3 killing Summer Game Fest but an actual music concert celebrating 10 years of The Game Awards. The announcement doesn’t include a Coachella-style lineup of acts like a typical concert announcement would; rather, it’s a listing of game music you’ll hear during the performance.

There are 12 games that’ll be featured during the concert, including past game of the year winners like The Last of Us and a smattering of music from the most popular or most anticipated games to come, like Final Fantasy XVI and Starfield . You can also expect to hear the musical stylings of Hades , Elden Ring , and God of War, of course, but the concert also features music from gaming-adjacent media like the League of Legends show Arcane . But the set list isn’t all gas no breaks, unfortunately, featuring selections from the TERF (trans-exclusionary radical feminists) wizard game. Here’s the full list for your perusal.

THQ Nordic joins the lineup of summer gaming events

Even without E3, the summer lineup of gaming livestreams continues to get packed. The latest company to announce an event is THQ Nordic, which will be airing a “digital showcase” on August 11th at 3PM ET. The company says the event will include news and brand-new announcements as well as details on upcoming games in its lineup such as Alone in the Dark, Outcast 2 , and Trine 5 . You’ll be able to check it out on YouTube , Twitch , and Steam .

E3 is officially off the table this year, with the annual summer showcase canceled and its future looking murky . But already, a number of events have popped up to fill in the gap. In addition to THQ Nordic’s newly announced event, there’s Summer Game Fest on June 8th, a Microsoft showcase ( including a dedicated event for Starfield ) on June 11th, and an Ubisoft keynote on June 12th . Even Nintendo is getting in on the action with an in-person event kicking off in September .

Nintendo Live is coming to the US. The game maker announced Tuesday that it will hold Nintendo Live 2023 in Seattle, Washington, this September.

Like its Live event this past fall in Japan , this year’s in-person event will feature gameplay from Nintendo games, live stage performances, game tournaments, Nintendo-themed activities, and more. There isn’t any information about when exactly the event will take place in September, but Nintendo says to stay tuned for more details.
