Earn a Bachelor’s Degree

Research scientists can start by pursuing a bachelor’s degree in a field relevant to the research they want to conduct. For instance, an undergraduate degree in natural resources is helpful to become a wildlife biologist, while a prospective forensic scientist can pursue a degree in forensics.

Payscale reports the average research scientist earns about $87,800 per year as of February 2024. However, research scientist salaries can vary significantly depending on the field and the scientist’s experience level.

For example, Payscale reports that entry-level research scientists earn about $84,000 annually, but those with 20 or more years of experience average approximately $106,000 as of February 2024.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reports salary data for several types of research scientist careers. For example, a geoscientist earns a median wage of about $87,000, while the median wage of a physicist is around $139,000 as of May 2022.

As salaries vary based on research science positions, so does demand. To illustrate, the BLS projects the need for chemists and materials scientists to grow by 6% from 2022 to 2032 but projects medical scientist jobs to increase by 10% in the same timeframe. Both projections demonstrate above-average career growth, however.

North America

Our teams in Atlanta focus on theoretical and application aspects of computer science with a strong focus on machine learning and the algorithmic foundations and theoretical underpinnings of deep learning, with applications to natural language understanding, machine perception, robotics, and ubiquitous computing and sensing.

Our teams in Cambridge work closely with academics at local universities as well as collaborators at local institutes with a goal to impact both Google’s products and general scientific progress. Google Research in Montreal performs both open-ended and applied research, in numerous areas including reinforcement learning, meta-learning, optimization, program synthesis, generative modeling, machine translation, and more. We also support the local academic community and have several academic collaborations, including with Mila – Quebec Artificial Intelligence Institute.

We work in close collaboration with academia, with a goal to impact both Google’s products and general scientific progress. We accomplish this in two ways: by releasing software libraries, a way to build research findings into products and services, and through publishing our work and sharing our findings with the academic community.

Our team in Pittsburgh conducts research in natural language processing, machine learning, image and video understanding, and optimization, and our impacts range from academic paper publications to software systems used throughout Google. We collaborate closely with research and applied groups in many areas, and also work closely with Carnegie Mellon University and other organizations in the extremely strong computer science community in Pittsburgh.

Google Research teams in Accra collaborate with global research teams to lead many sustainability initiatives of particular interest to Africa. Researchers in our Amsterdam office push the boundaries of what is possible in many domains, including natural language understanding, computer vision and audio, reinforcement learning and machine learning for the natural sciences.

In Berlin, our teams work on a range of topics from foundational to more applied and involve data comprised of text, images, video, audio and more. We are engaging and collaborating closely with Berlin’s vibrant academic and startup communities.

We work on machine learning, natural language understanding and machine perception, from foundational research to AI innovations, in search, healthcare, and crisis response.

We work on natural language understanding and conversational dialog, text-to-speech, (on-device) machine learning, human-centered AI research and user research as well as healthcare.

We work on problems in quantum computing as well as speech and language processing, and collaborate closely with Google’s product teams across the world.

The Nairobi Research Center is dedicated to advancing research in Food Security and Agriculture. Located in the vibrant capital of Kenya, the center brings together a diverse team of experts that address global food challenges through the development of cutting-edge solutions that shape a brighter future for generations to come.

Division of Population Health Research at NICHD within NIH is seeking to recruit an outstanding staff scientist in the Epidemiology Branch (EB). The branch conducts investigator-initiated and collaborative original epidemiologic research studies focusing on reproductive, perinatal, and pediatric health endpoints to identify etiologic mechanisms, at-risk subgroups, and interventions aimed at maximizing health and preventing, diagnosing, and/or treating disease.

About the position

Staff scientists within the Epidemiology Branch (EB) at NICHD make high-level contributions to the branch’s active research programs, develop and implement study protocols, assist in developing relevant etiological hypotheses, prepare analytic plans and institutional review board packages necessary for successful study completion, as well as prepare scientific papers and other related work as required. In addition, staff scientists mentor trainees and provide professional and contracting services. https://www.nichd.nih.gov/about/org/dir/dph/officebranch/eb The successful applicant will work on a newly developed research program led by EB Branch Chief, Dr. Bizu Gelaye.

The research areas will focus on: (1) understanding the role preconception and perinatal psychosocial exposures (e.g., trauma exposure) play in shaping short- and long-term maternal and offspring health outcomes; (2) studying how biological, molecular, environmental, social, and structural factors impact preterm birth, particularly among racial and ethnic groups; and (3) identifying evidence-based solutions that promote health equity and improve outcomes in maternal and child health through prevention, early diagnostics, therapeutics, and/or policy change.

Qualifications

This staff scientist position will require advanced epidemiology knowledge and skills to function independently, leading statistical analysis of longitudinal cohort studies under the general direction of a senior investigator and as part of a research team. Qualifications include an earned doctorate in epidemiology or a closely related field (e.g., maternal and child health, public health, psychology) and additional years of postdoctoral experience relevant to the position. Preferred candidates will have excellent communication skills (both oral and written), strong quantitative skills, including statistical methods commonly used in epidemiology (e.g., longitudinal data analysis, hierarchical modeling), and experience in mentoring. Preference will be given to applicants with demonstrated research interests in the areas of perinatal epidemiology, maternal and child health disparities, and the early origins of health, as evidenced by training, work experience, and publications in peer-reviewed journals. Experience with genomics and epigenomics research is advantageous but not required.

Ideas Labs to advance research capacity at the nation's historically Black colleges and universities

The U.S. National Science Foundation has awarded $10.5 million for Ideas Lab projects to assess and address research capacity needs, increase access to research facilities and build human capital at historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs). The projects, funded through the NSF Advancing Research Capacity at HBCUs through Exploration and Innovation (ARC-HBCU) opportunity, will foster collaboration and build sustainable networks to facilitate interdisciplinary research in science, technology, engineering and mathematics at HBCUs.      "The inaugural NSF ARC-HBCU Ideas Lab is a unique opportunity to connect talent and build research networks across our HBCUs to further advance an integrated and collaborative vision for the most critical research capacity needs of HBCUs," says NSF Director Sethuraman Panchanathan.     Since the early 19th century, HBCUs have played a crucial role in providing higher education opportunities for students who had limited access to other higher education options. Moreover, HBCUs are vital for diversifying the STEM workforce. 8.5% of Black undergraduate students attend HBCUs, yet almost 18% of the Black STEM bachelor's degrees are awarded from HBCUs . A significant number of successful HBCU graduates have made a profound impact in STEM fields. Yet HBCUs are systemically underfunded, historically underrepresented as awardees, and face many infrastructure and administrative resource barriers.      The ARC HBCU Ideas lab was funded by the NSF HBCU-Excellence in Research program in the Research Capacity and Competitiveness section. The focus of the ARC-HBCU program is to promote diversity and inclusion in research, enhance the research capacity of HBCUs and foster collaboration among faculty, students and industry partners. Through the Ideas lab concept, NSF is providing the opportunity for participants to work collaboratively to identify and define the scope of the unique challenges faced by HBCUs in meeting education and research needs. As the projects progress, they will dynamically develop and hone novel ideas about how these challenges may be addressed.      The awardees and summary of each project are listed below:    

Panoramic Institutional Assessments: A Playbook for Advancing Research Capacity  

This project, led by Delaware State, will bring together faculty, research administrators and institutional leaders to develop innovative tools and approaches to enhance research capacity at consortium institutions, with long-term goals to scale up to HBCUs more broadly. The project will provide a framework to guide institutions through a self-directed process to examine their research ecosystem, help institutional leaders identify and address service gaps to strengthen key administrative functions that support research administration, and guide faculty in personalized assessments of their development as individual researchers using an existing framework. The project also includes partnerships with advocacy organizations that will assist in disseminating the research capacity assessments and playbook, ensuring a broad reach and sustainable impact across campuses.   

Collaborating institutions: Tuskegee University, Huston-Tillotson University, Hampton University, Tennessee State University.     Partnership for Advancing Research Capacity in Semiconductors at Historically Black Colleges and Universities  

Central State University is leading this project, which will enhance research capacity in semiconductor technology amongst partnering institutions by establishing robust research networks, enhancing faculty expertise, increasing access to state-of-the-art research facilities, and expanding student opportunities for education, training and hands-on research. This project aligns with the "CHIPS and Science Act of 2022" and has the potential to significantly broaden participation in semiconductor manufacturing and semiconductor research among African Americans, who are underrepresented in this industry even when compared to engineering sectors in general. It offers a rare opportunity for these institutions to engage and partner with industry players while contributing to workforce development in the semiconductor field.   

Collaborating institutions: North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University, Fayetteville State University, Hampton University.   Sub awardee institutions: Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University, Coppin State University, and Meharry Medical College.     The HBCU Ujima Collective: Building Research Capacity at HBCUs through a Grow Your Own Research Corps Model

Led by Miles College, this project will assess, align and improve research infrastructure and processes at five HBCUs through the cultivation of highly trained human capital for work in the research enterprise. The project team will use open systems theory to produce a model that builds a corps of research administrators and scientists that can enhance and sustain research capacity across all HBCUs. The project will enhance research capacity at the institutions by speeding up the transition of the research enterprise, establishing the "grow your own model," and disseminating the research and assessment tools to allow model implementation at other institutions.  

Collaborating institutions: Morgan State University, Howard University, Winston-Salem State University, Tennessee State University.  

HBCU Research and Collaboration Exchange    

This project, led by Virginia State University, seeks to create an online HBCU-focused platform to amplify existing research capacity by connecting researchers across HBCUs to other investigators, projects and equipment. The partnering institutions will pilot this project to create a multilayer platform by first developing an expertise and resource directory representative of all researchers at the respective institutions. In addition to raising awareness about and increasing connectivity among existing research expertise within the nation's HBCUs, the long-term impacts of the project will include the creation of a collaboration readiness index for existing and future technologies, as well as the creation of virtual collaboration space.     Collaborating institutions: North Carolina Central University, Winston-Salem State University, Alabama Agricultural and Mechanical University, Fisk University, University of the Virgin Islands.

Job Summary:

The Religious Studies Program at UW-Madison invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in Religion and Technology beginning August 2025. We would be especially interested in applicants whose research and/or teaching addresses AI in some way. Scholars of all religious traditions and geographic areas whose research is rooted in religion and technology are encouraged to apply. Applicants should have the capacity to teach large gateway courses to Religious Studies and a capstone course on theory and method in Religious Studies. The successful candidate will advance the educational mission of the College of Letters & Science, that values, prioritizes, and actualizes evidence-based and student-centered teaching and (undergraduate student) mentoring. They will contribute to an environment that fosters engagement and a sense of belonging for faculty, staff, students and members of the broader community.

Responsibilities:

The successful candidate will actively participate in the intellectual life of the Religious Studies Program and will teach introductory surveys and upper-level undergraduate courses, mentor undergraduate students, engage in significant ongoing scholarly research and publication, and perform department, university, and community services as appropriate for faculty rank. The general teaching load is 4 courses per year, 2 in one semester and 2 in the other.
