Last week I got a chance to watch Nepali comedy film. Chhakka Panja. Chhakka Panja is one of the most popular films in Nepali Film Industry. It has also observed 100 days in the film halls. This is the film directed by Deepa Shree Niraula. The film reflects the bitter truth of our contemporary society. This film gives the lesson to the husbands who go to foreign countries to earn money and also to their wives. The story of the film begins from Atit (Shiv Hari Paudel). He gets DV for America and gets married to Brinda (Barsha Raut). He flies to America alone and promises with his wife that he will come back to take her.

There is another character, Raja (Deepak Raj Giri) who lives with his widow mother. Neither he wants to marry nor to work. He wanders here and there with his three friends: Jeetu, Kedar and Buddhi. Except Buddhi, all three are unmarried. When Shiva goes to America, his wife Brinda and Deepak fall in love. Brinda shows real love but Deepak wants only to exploit her beauty and youth. She becomes pregnant. At the same time, Shiva comes back from America without informing and knows their love affair but he doesn’t show any reaction.

On the other hand, Deepak gets married with Champa (Priyanka) due to his mother’s force. Then Aryan Sigdel is seen as a villain. While Deepak and Priyanka are going to Kathmandu, Aryan and Priyanka attack to Deepak in the forest and injure Deepak. Then Aryan and Priyanka run away from there.

Similarly Jeetu and Namrata are in love but Namrata’s father advises Jeetu to go foreign country and earn money to get Namrata. So he is in Kathmandu. One day Buddhi beats his wife being drunk so she has gone to maiti. Although everybody thinks Kedar is in foreign country, he is in Kathmandu as the head of criminal gang. Deepak and Buddhi go to Kathmandu to search Aryan and Priyanka. They meet to Jeetu and Kedar there.

One day Aryan phones to Deepak and informs that he is getting married to Priyanka at temple. He also threatens to Deepak to stop that marriage if he can. When four friends (Deepak, Jeetu, Kedar, Buddhi) reach to temple, Aryan reveals a secret plan. In fact, Shiva Hari is getting married to Priyanka not Aryan. Priyanka has got married to Deepak according to Shiva’s plan and he is getting married to Priyanka (Deepak’s wife) to teach lesson to Deepak.

In this way, the film has happy ending because every problem is solved. Deepak accepts Brinda (Shiva’s pregnant wife) as his wife. Shiva gets married to Priyanka (Deepak’s wife). Buddhi realizes his mistake and promises not to beat his wife again. So his wife returns from maiti. Jeetu returns from foreign country by earning money and gets married to Bishnu (Namrata). Kedar also gets married to Deepa Shree.

The film is very interesting to every audience since it gives moral lesson to every husband not to play with youth of others’ wives. The dialogues used by the actors are very humorous. The audiences can’t stay without laughing while watching the film. The plot, acting of the characters, comic scenes and dialogues and the message conveyed by the film are really praiseworthy.

Jhola is a Nepali film based on Krishna Dharawasi’s short story “Jhola”. It has depicted Nepali society about the Sati tradition that was prevalent until the 1920s. The film has beautifully presented the issues of violence against women. “Has Nepalese society really passed through such in human tradition?” is the question every youngster wonders about.

The plot develops with the death of Garima’s husband in which she has to immolate herself upon her husband’s death, typically on his funeral pyre. She is supposed to be burnt alive with the dead body of her husband according to the tradition. However, she escapes the fire and hides in a cave. The help of her son fascinates the audience.

Almost all the scenes seem realistic and historical. Traditional tools like dhiki, janto, madaani, etc. give traditional look in the film. Similarly traditional lights like ranks, diyalo and fire place represent ancient environment to the spectators. In addition to Sati tradition, the movie also touch Kamara Kamari(a kind of slavery) tradition. What a beautiful cinematography it is! I think costumes of the artists and the leaf music in traditional tunes touch the heart of every one present in the cinema hall. Garima’s natural appearance, her role and her acting are spellbinding and add to the beauty of the movie.

This is a must watch movie. Don’t miss it.

“Pardeshi’s strong key points are its story and screenplay, music and actors performance. These key elements of the film have made the film watchable one. Ramesh BC and Narayan Raymajhi have written the story and screenplay. Credit must be given to the story and screenplay for adding emotional undercurrent into the film which are appreciable and will hold you in the seat. The emotions touch the right chord and a couple of them could even make the weak-hearted cry.

Musician B.B.Anuragi is another appreciable team member of the film Pardeshi. All the songs of the film are melodious that will get into the nerves of the audience. Every song has its importance in the film which will take the story to next level. The purely folk melody songs will make your movie experience enjoyable.

Actors’ performance is another strong aspect of the film. I could not find any flaw on any actors’ performance. From lead actors to supporting actors, child actors to guest actors, everyone has performed brilliantly. Every actor has got into the character and performed. Every character is developed properly which will give sense to their individual story and will help the audience to relate with them.

Prashant Tamang being an Indian idol and an international celebrity, he is not presented in the film as a celebrity. This is one of the important beauties of the film, Prashant is into the character of Binaya so much that audience will forget that they are watching Prashant in the screen.

Rajni KC was featured in glamorous avatar in her first film Loafer. But in Pardeshi, she has got a big opportunity to showcase her talent as an actress. Her performance as Namrata is brilliant. Keshav Bhattarai as Binaya’s father is good. Naren Khadka has also performed well. All other actors have done appreciable works which have given life to every characters of the film.

Pardeshi’s major drawback is its cinematography. Shiva Dhakal’s cinematography is poor. Beautiful scenes Palpa are not captured well. All the shots are normål and don’t add beauty to the visual experience of watching a film. If cinematography was improved, the film would have been a masterpiece. The climax also seems filmy but doesn’t hamper the film.

Narayan Wagle is one of few Nepali journalists I admire I have been an avid reader of his gossip column Coffee Guff which is marked by gift of phrases. I’m also a fan of his graphic reporting specially from remote corners of Nepal. Simplicity, I must say, is the hallmark of Wagle’s writing, But, as I waded through the pages of Wagle’s debut novel Palpasa Cafe, I concluded that it’s just an extended version of Coffee Guff.

Let’s begin from the beginning. The novel starts with a metafictional note. The narrator, a journalist, is waiting for his protagonist to show the manuscript before sending it for printing. But then, Drishya (sight, literally) gets arrested. Chapter One opens in Goa, a perfect place for love, it seems! Here a painter falls in love with his admirer (a US returned, amateur documentary maker), solitary loitering.

Let me take a break from storytelling. In fact, if you have read the novel, you know the story and if you haven’t you don’t want to know, for it spoils your curiosity. Anyway, the story goes, as life goes on. But two things are crucial: how it is told and what the content is. Wagle obviously is a formalist. He prefers form over content. Nevertheless, the story weaves both the complexities of ongoing conflict and its consequences.

But, like the protagonist’s shattered dream of opening Palpasa Café in the idyllic hills, the novel seems promising in the outset while needs up in the maze of it’s own making. Conflict is only the backdrop where an artist searches meaning of his love-life. But despite having an encyclopaedic knowledge of nature and painting, Wagle fails to portray Drishya as an artist. Like Wagle himself, he sounds more like a joumalist; so he is an alter ego of its creator. The novel is oddly replete with female characters (Palpasa, Christina, Phulan, Jemina, gradma etc.) whereas males are not only mysteriously absent but are also nameless and faceless in the narrative.

Muna Madan is one of the best creations of Nepali poet, Laxmi Prasad Devkota, popularly acclaimed as “Mahakavi” in Nepali literature. He graduated in Arts in 1930 and in Law in 1933 both from Patna University, India. His early poems were influenced by the English Romantic Movement and his later poems speak with a powerful modern voice. Muna Madan is a folk epic written in poetic version in 1935. This book was among the creations of Devkota which challenged Sanskrit scholars who dominated the Nepalese literary scene. While these scholars determined good poetry as those following the Sanskrit form, Muna Madan was based on the Jhaurey folk tune. This book received recognition from the Ranas at that time.

The book describes the life of a poor society of the rural area of Nepal. Madan, the main and the most important character of the book, represents all the youths of Nepal go to abroad to earn money for their living. Madan is such a character who is compelled to go abroad as he is jobless because of the problems of unemployment and poverty prevalent in his country. The wife of Madan, Muna is the queen of love and sacrifice. She loves her Madan a lot so she is upset as she has to send him to a place, Lhasa, where there are lots of obstacles and risks. But finally she accepts this challenge and stays in the country with her mother-in-law who is old and weak.

Madan goes to Lhasa but his journey is not easy. He faces a lot of obstacles and difficulties during his journey and this is beautifully described in the book. The book has tried to show the ups and downs of life by illustrating the problems of Madan’s life. Life is not that easy and only the one lives a meaningful life who accepts the challenges of life and who never runs away from such challenges. While moving through different countryside areas, Madan catches a deadly disease but his friends don’t help him turning out to be selfish. Finally he is rescued by a man who is considered to be of lower caste in Nepal. That is why it is said that a man is said to be great not by caste or race but by a heart full of love and humanity. After Madan gets rid of the disease, he returns his home but his mother and his beloved wife had already died.

Through the story of Muna and Madan, Laxmi Prasad Devkota wants to stabilize the facts of traditional societies, unscientific beliefs and the negative impacts of unemployment and poverty in Nepalese society. He has shown the love between a mother and a son. The poet has wonderfully defined love by writing about the relationship of Muna and Madan. Because of the combination of all these categories of human life, this book has earned a great successful journey in the Nepali Literature. At the time of his death, Laxmi Prasad Devkota asked to preserve his book, Muna Madan,

I Capture the Castle

Dodie Smith’s novel I Capture the Castle is a journey through the mind of a young writer as she attempts to chronicle her daily life. Seventeen-year-old Cassandra Mortmain has recently learned to speed-write, and she decides to work on her writing skills by describing the actions and conversations of those around her.

Cassandra lives in a fourteenth-century English castle with an interesting cast of characters: her beautiful older sister, Rose; her rather unsociable author father and hist second wife, artist-model Topaz; Stephen, the garden boy; a cat and a bull terrier; and sometimes her brother Thomas when he is home from school. One fateful day they make the acquaintance of the Cotton family, including the two sons, and a web of tangled relationships ensues.

While I definitely recommend this book to other readers, I would recommend it to older teenagers, mainly because it will resonate better with them. The writing is tame enough that younger teens could also read it, but most of the characters are adults or on the verge of adulthood. Older readers would take the most from it since they can not only relate, but they may also better pick up on and appreciate Cassandra’s sometimes subtle humor. Over the course of the novel, Cassandra undergoes a definite transformation from child to mature young adult, even though it’s only over the course of several months. I love that I could see into her mindset and read exactly what she was feeling when she thought out situations. Her thoughts flowed well and moved the book along very quickly. Cassandra’s narrative voice is wonderful. She is serious at times, but also very witty, which makes for an engaging read. It feels absolutely real, as though I’m reading someone’s actual journal. Sometimes I forget that I am reading a story and not a real-life account. Her emotions and the dialogue are so genuine, and they are spot-on for a seventeen-year-old girl in her situation.

Cassandra has many wonderful insights on life, on topics ranging from writing to faith to matters of the heart. I personally have had some of the same thoughts as Cassandra, except Ms. Smith was able to put them into words.

Capture the Castle should be essential reading for aspiring writers, those looking for historical fiction or romance, or anyone who loves reading amazing classic books. Dodie Smith is an exceptional writer, and 1 Capture the Castle is a book that will never become out of fashion.

Tanhaji - The Unsung Warrior, starring Ajay Devgan and directed by Bhushan and Krishnan Kumar, was released in 2020. The Om Raut-directed movie is a biography of Tanhaji. Tanhaji Malusare was a renowned combatant in Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj's army. The film is a biographical sketch of him. Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj handed over the charge of 23 forts to Mirza Raje in the contract of Kondhana, which is the pride of Maharashtra and is handed over to Udaybhan, after his release from the clutches of Aurangzeb. Chatrapati Shivaji Maharaj wants to regain it. Tanhaji takes up the responsibility by keeping his son's wedding aside. He climbs the fort with a few Marathas and battles with Udaybhan. The movie is plenty of action, and each scene is expertly and smoothly directed. The 17th century in Maharashtra is expertly depicted in the movie as it reflects the Maratha empire. The film crew worked very hard to construct a lengthy set so that it resembled the valley. For a power-packed climax, it is a must-watch.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s 12th Fail differs vastly from his previous movies in its treatment and tone. In the process of re-inventing himself at the age of 71, Chopra has made an immersive, emotionally resonant film about the struggle that undergirds aspiration.

12th Fail isn’t just a fairy tale grounded in actual experiences. Like the fictional characters in Satyakam and Newton , Chopra’s hero is a young man determined to stay be honest in a system hollowed out by corruption. Manoj, indelibly played by Vikrant Massey, doesn’t just want to be an Indian Police Service officer – he wants to be the one who enforces the rules rather than bending them.

12th Fail begins in 1997 in a village in the Chambal region. Some of the rebellious spirit that produced Chambal’s notorious dacoits has seeped into Ramveer (Harish Khanna) who, when hauled up for refusing to enable corruption, aims his slipper at the man demanding the bribe.

Ramveer’s son Manoj is more at ease with the graft that oils the system. An upright police officer causes Manoj to earn the “12th Fail” title, but he takes away the right lessons from this fiasco. Manoj goes to Delhi, where he starts cramming for the United Public Service Commission examination. His father’s humiliation looms large over Manoj’s quest.

The cards are stacked against Manoj – he is poor, his English language skills are basic, his love for his coaching class mate Shraddha (Medha Shankar) complicates his effort. The finishing line is nearly always in sight until invisible hurdles surface.

Through it all, Manoj tirelessly sweats and swots. If setbacks threaten his progress, encouragement comes from unexpected sources. Even as the film sticks with Manoj’s monomaniacal mission, it is made clear that he could not have done it alone – nor is he alone.

Apart from his family, one of Manoj’s biggest allies is a failed USPC aspirant (Anshumaan Pushkar). Manoj’s friend (Anant Vijay Joshi) is by his side through thick and thin, while himself trying to crack the USPC exams. Shraddha is the lodestar who keeps Manoj on course.

The movie is based on Anurag Pathak’s novel Twelfth Fail , which was inspired by Indian Administrative Service officer Manoj Kumar Sharma. Chopra’s film scores by giving Manoj’s journey the full-canvas exploration it deserves.

Hectic early scenes capture the giddy quality of Manoj’s dream. The later portions have a more steady rhythm once he reaches Delhi. The expanse of the bustling worlds inhabited by Manoj is replaced by narrower perspectives as he inches towards his goal.

The dialogue keeps aphorisms to a minimum – the slogan “Restart” suffices – while dialling down the melodrama. If Manoj’s strivings have a lived-in quality, the people surrounding him are relatable too.

Hope is dashed in a realistic register. Manoj’s relationship with Shraddha is the one area in which fairy-dust enters the picture. But in depicting Manoj’s every sweat drop, the movie frequently overreaches itself.

Far too many curveballs are thrown Manoj’s way. The saga of achievement in extremely trying circumstances clocks a staggering 140 minutes. A crisper version would have worked just fine. The dual-toned emphasis on success and honesty isn’t as smooth as it needed to be.

The detailing, although a bit too copious in moments, eventually matters. In treating an ordinary man’s story as an epic, Chopra has brought us close to the cut-throat culture surrounding UPSC examinations, as well as the do-or-die desire to enter government service, as few films have.

We are right there with Manoj in the packed coaching class institute, where he is one among many. We are present too in the dark flour mill where he works to pay the bills. The streets of Mukherjee Nagar in Delhi, where Manoj initially arrives, are seething with expectation, some of which cannot be fulfilled.

This ordinary Indian is brought to life by an extraordinary performance by Vikrant Massey. He pulls off a challenging set of emotions – naive, hopeful, resolute, confused, optimistic, pessimistic – without dropping a beat. While 12th Fail has an ensemble of excellent actors, Massey’s portrayal of a student making it without faking it tops the class.

Writing a Movie Review: Teaching Tips and Lesson Ideas

To me, there’s nothing more enjoyable as a middle school teacher than blending films into English language arts classes. I’m a real movie lover, and I find that a good film-based activity is the perfect way to engage students in work on essential ELA skills in the last few weeks of school.

Thanks to Netflix, Disney+, and other streaming services, our students have more access to films than people at any other time in history! But I’ve noticed that even with so much exposure to movies, students need quite a lot of guidance to view films critically and with intention.

This is why I find an end-of-year film review project to be so useful in the ELA classroom. Most students are natural movie reviewers already. They always come in on Monday mornings buzzing about the movies they saw over the weekend!

With this in mind, I like to tap into their natural instincts to share what they love, and help them learn the step-by-step organizational skills for writing a film review in the process. Here’s how this looks in the classroom:

1. Show Students Film Review Examples

To begin, I like to lead a brief whole-class discussion where we chat about the difference between getting a recommendation from a friend and reading a professional movie review . During this discussion, I point out that there are some specific things that a movie reviewer considers, including cinematography, actors, lighting, and sound.

Once students have the basic idea, I like to show them several examples of film reviews in different formats. If your school receives a newspaper subscription, you could collect and save film reviews to share with your class. Or, you may prefer a more modern approach and search online! Written film reviews tend to follow a similar structure and provide students with a good understanding of what they need to include.

Because most students also enjoy video content, we spend time looking at YouTube reviews as well. I might be dating myself, but I like to show old clips of Siskel and Ebert, the famous “two thumbs up” reviewers from the ‘80s and ‘90s! What I especially enjoy about their style is that they don’t always agree, but their reviews are still effective and engaging.

2. Know Your Audience

As we wrap up this lesson, I ask students to consider the audience of each review. For example, is the review aimed at children, adults, or even a teen magazine? The target audience affects not only tone and style, but also impacts the focus of the review. For example, a teen magazine review might focus on the famous actors of the film. By contrast, a special effects magazine might provide insight into a particular element of the filmmaking process.

3. Teach How to Watch the Film

The next step is to teach students how to watch a film with purpose, rather than simply for pleasure! In an ideal situation, I recommend watching a film twice. The first time is to get an overall understanding of the plot, and then to consider the choices the director and actors made in creating the film.

In the classroom, I like to pause the film frequently and let my students jot down notes. While they are watching, I remind them to consider each scene with an observant eye. I ask:

What does the director choose to show (or not show)?
How do the actors convey emotion, depth, and intention through their movements, as well as their words?

4. Provide Common Vocabulary

As part of a film study, it’s important for students to be able to speak the “language” of movie making. After viewing the movie, I like to take some time to outline some key terms to help students write their reviews.

Words like blockbuster, avant-garde, disjointed, or uninspired can help elevate movie reviews in ELA from “friendly recommendations” to “review quality.” I find a printable list of useful writing terms is especially helpful. This is especially true if you want to avoid the “It was a good movie,” trap!

5. Provide An Organizational Framework

When it comes to actually writing the review, I like to be quite specific in my instructions, breaking down the review into specific paragraphs .

For example, introductory paragraphs should start by engaging the reader with a strong opinion, thought-provoking statement, or even a quote to act as a “hook.” I like to remind students that the purpose of this paragraph is also to share some basic information about the film. This should include title, director, genre, and setting, as well as a brief plot overview. No spoilers, please!

Next, I have students plot out their paragraph about the main characters of the movie. I like to begin this process by having them reflect on the portrayal of the characters, and whether the actors are well-suited for their roles. As they evaluate the performances, middle school ELA students can support their opinions using evidence and examples from the film.

Because film techniques can vary so much from movie to movie, I like to give quite a lot of freedom in the next paragraph. I ask students to consider the following film techniques and choose one to focus on in detail:

Camera work
Sound effects

After they have evaluated film techniques, it’s time for students to flex their ELA muscles and reflect on the overall theme of the movie. In their fourth paragraph, I ask them to consider how the director uses filming techniques, set design, characters, conflict, or other elements to express or develop this theme. I like to guide this paragraph by asking questions like:

Has the theme been developed effectively?
Does it have an impact on the viewer, a specific community, or the world?

Finally, it’s time to wrap up the review! In this final paragraph, students need to give the film a rating in whatever “system” they choose. Popular choices in my classroom include thumbs up, stars, or even popcorn kernels on a scale of one to five! As they justify their rating and provide their personal opinions, I also encourage the class to consider what type of person would enjoy the movie.

6. Give Prompting Questions

In my experience, prompting questions help students focus on key things to include in their ELA movie review. I like to remind my students that graphic organizers are a tool for working through their ideas. They don’t need to be filled out in complete sentences, but they provide a useful framework for structuring their review.

7. Make time For Peer Feedback & Editing

While students always resist the peer feedback and editing stage of the writing process, it really makes a difference in their overall quality of work.

Before they finalize their review, I have students work with a peer for a closer look at the grammatical and structural elements of their movie review. One way to do this is to follow the “three stars and a wish” format. In this activity, each student has to identify three positive things about the writing and one “wish” – an area of improvement.

Alternatively, if you have an established peer editing process in your classroom, this is a great opportunity to use it!

8. Provide Options for Presentation

Now for the fun part – the presentation of the movie review! I believe that students do their best work when they can express choice and voice in their finished product.

Movie reviews can be shared in a lot of different ways (in the ELA classroom and in real life!). First, I have students select whether they want to share their completed review as a newspaper article, blog post, podcast, pre-recorded video, or even a live presentation in class.

If you’re tight on time, one trick I love is to put students in small groups (I find four works well) and present their reviews to each other. This alternative to whole-class presentations frees me up to circulate among the different groups. You’d be surprised at how much you can see and hear while doing this! At the end of each presentation, I like to have students grade each other using a common rubric. The presenters can self-assess their work as well!

Imagine that a journey took longer than expected. Write a paragraph about what happened.

I will never forget my travel from Kathmandu to Jhapa. I had gone there with my elder sister to spend my summer vacation. The return journey was delayed by natural, political and mechanical factors.

It was rainy season when heavy rain and landslides often make road travel difficult. It had been raining from early morning on the day we left Kathmandu. It was already seven because it was the last bus. We had not reached Munglin when we saw a long queue of vehicles before us. The road was blocked by a landslide. Armed forces arrived two hours later. It was almost evening when the road was finally cleared.

At night we faced a mechanical problem. After stopping in Bharatpur for an hour for meal, we moved ahead. I was afraid that something might go wrong and could not sleep. My sister tried to comfort me by giving me her mobile phone to play games. It was almost midnight when one of the back wheels came off. We had to wait for another bus of the same company for help. Only by the morning the bus was ready.

We were further delayed by a strike in the Terai districts. We had to spend the whole day in the bus and roaming the streets and bazaars. The bus left again. But that very day, Koshi River had overflooded because of heavy rain. The dam along its bank was burst and 20 to 30 kilometres of the highway was flooded. It took five more hours to drive through India before we entered Nepal again at Biratnagar the next day.

Thus, a normal 12-hour journey took more than 50 hours.

Meera Sharma, an official of World Bank, is a friend of mine. I met her first when I was in class eight. We studied together in Janata Higher Secondary School. She was from a poor family with many children. Her father and mother could not send all of them to school. Fortunately, she was the youngest child and got a chance to study. Her elder sisters were married before twenty. After passing SLC in distinction, she went to Kathmandu for her further study. She lived with her uncle. After she completed higher secondary level education, she took Economics as a major subject. She topped in Master’s degree from Tribhuvan University and got government scholarship to study in Oxford University, from where she did her PhD. After working in many banks in England, she finally got a job in the Bank of England because of her talent. After 13 years of service and after many attempts, she has now got a job in the World Bank.

In the past women were limited inside homes, doing household activities like coking, washing, cleaning and looking after children. Now their position and roles are changing.

A major factor to bring changes in the position of women is modernization. In the earliest times men did the hunting while women stayed home to look after the children and prepare food. It was necessary for survival at that time. Now we do not hunt animals or gather foods in the jungle. We buy them in the market. We only need money. For that we need to work. Therefore, women have also started going out to work. In many homes, it is the women who earn more and support the family.

Earlier most jobs women did involved traditional women’s skills, such as sewing, knitting, child care, cosmetics, facial treatments and hotel. This is still the case. But With the society becoming more open and broad-minded, they have started modelling and acting, which often need glamorous get-up. Now there are women in politics and administrative fields and abroad to work. In the past, only males were doctors and females nurses. Similarly, males involved in sports and females in dance. Now a days these roles are reversed as we find male nurses and dancers and lady doctors and sportswomen.

With the society becoming more open and modern, traditional gender roles are changing. And the changes have come more for women than for men.

Birtamode: A New Tourist Area

Situated in the center of Jhapa district, Birtamode, my hometown, is one of the popular towns in eastern Nepal and the commercial hub of Mechi zone. There are many places for entertainment: film halls, discos, and circus. For those who like shopping, there are supermarkets and department stores as well as the cheap footpath shops. There are cheap lodges as well as expensive 5 star hotels for the visitors to stay. 7 kilometres to the west is a small zoo, where some species of wild life are kept. There is also a lake where we can do boating. Recently, a suspension bridge has also been made. People can enjoy watching the rising sun by going to Antu Dada, which is a two-hour drive to the north-east from Birtamode. On the way to Antu is minor Pathivara temple. There are other religious places near Birtamode as well. Kichakbadh is thirty kilometres to the south, and Arjundhara just five kilometres to the north. If we go 17 kilometres to the east, we will reach the Indian border.

Almost every person these days carries a cell phone. They are manufactured in large quantities and by various brands in different countries. Now we find a variety of smart phones with fascinating features. Being easily available in the market and affordable has encouraged people to carry mobile phones. Moreover, the prices of SIM cards being reasonable also contribute to the popularity of mobile phones.

Cell phones are one of the greatest and most useful inventions. Earlier, people had to depend on mails that too much time to be delivered. Later came landlines and computers that eased the connection with people in different parts of the world. Cell phones help people stay in touch with others in different corners of the world at any time because cell phones are portable and wireless. Cell phones these days come equipped with the new features and functions like various games, radio, camera, music player, audio and video recorders, multimedia messaging services, document readers, facilities for streaming and watching videos, video callings and many more.

But there is an equally dark side to the story because cell phones can be easily misused. Widespread use of cell phones has made way for its misuse too especially by the youth, anti-socials, terrorists and other criminals. Camera phones with MMS facilities are used to take unauthorized photos and shoot pornographic videos and spread them. Moreover, SIM cards can be easily available and there is no proper facility for checking of one’s records. This can make it easier for terrorists to misuse these phones for various activities. The youths are so much involved in sending messages, talking over the phone and spending most of their times in the virtual world that they have less care about practical life. What is more, they might be easily spoilt as they can easily watch pornographic videos on the Internet.

Mobile phones are both a blessing and a curse depending on how we use it. It is up to us to use it in a responsible way and make it a blessing in our lives.

Compare and contrast between two places you have visited.

I like travelling and often visit places chance permits. After final exam of class 12, I visited Kathmandu. This summer I went to visit my relatives in Dharan. Both are cities but there are some differences.

Kathmandu is more populated and expensive than Dharan. Because it is the capital city, people from different parts and corners of the country have gathered there. Local products are few and most items come from other places. Therefore, prices of goods are higher. Kathmandu offers more job opportunities than Dharan. But like Kathmandu, Dharan is not lacking in transportation, advanced technology and facilities of higher education and hospitals. But there are more and wider streets in Kathmandu than in Dharan.

Dharan has a better environment than Kathmandu. Being situated at a higher altitude, both are cooler than the Terai region. But Dharan lies at the border of hill and Terai while Kathmandu is a valley. Unlike Dharan, it is colder in winter. There is more space in Dharan because it is still growing. The air is fresher because of a nearby forest. It is more peaceful and beautiful. People of Dharan are friendlier. In contrast, Kathmandu has many historical monuments and world heritage sites. That is why it attracts more tourists.

Life is easier in both cities, but social and natural environment is better in Dharan. My travel experiences have taught me about the important differences between the city and the village.

The Last 50 Years: has the quality of life improved?

The quality of life in most countries has undoubtedly improved over the last 50 years. Our country Nepal has seen similar changes. And other changes will continue to take place in the future. We can see the changes in aspects like lifestyles and living standards. Many factors are responsible for this improved quality of life: ease of transport, sources of electricity, sanitation and clean drinking water, public education etc.

People’s lifestyles and living standards have improved because of the role of government, increasing level of income and awareness. Because of availability of clean drinking water and public sewage systems, cholera and other major diseases are found no more. There are similar results from clean air laws and limits on the discharge of dangerous pollutants. Police and laws protecting people and their property have ensured internal security. Because of public education, maximum number of people are able to read and write. Public health care makes healthier people with longer lives. Food safety rules, vaccinations and other efforts by government have succeeded in saving many lives that used to be lost in the past. Much investment has been going on hydropower, and cheap and abundant electricity allowed for mass production lowers the cost of factory products. New labour laws give children the right to education and health instead of working, keep wages stable and set standards so there is no discrimination in payment on the basis of gender and ethnicity.

Based on the available opportunities, people are doing full and part time jobs. Many have been going to foreign countries to earn money for an easy and comfortable life. More people have been engaged in business, transportation, communication, public administration and so on. Many people travel abroad. Mobile phones and motorbikes are now common. People spend more on food, clothes and entertainment. They have become more health-conscious and often visit doctors. They are concerned about keeping fit and do exercises. These activities are likely to continue in the coming years. More people will have mobiles and bikes. Villages are becoming towns and towns are growing into cities.

Write a review for a newspaper of a recent film, play or book. Review of Muna Madan

I like watching films and watch one each day. I also like reading and often read books. Recently I saw a film named “Muna Madan” based on a story of a young man Madan. The main character in this film is a young Madan who struggles for life.

Madan leaves his family and country because he wants to earn money for a better future of his family. He goes to Lhasa, a province in China. There he works hard and earns enough. Then he decides to return. But he falls ill on the way. His friends leave him. Fortunately, a Sherpa, an inhabitant of Himalayan region, finds him and takes him to his house. He treats Madan, who recovers soon. While taking leave, Madan touches the man’s feet although he belongs to a higher caste. Here Madan utters the most famous line in Nepali literary works: a man becomes great not because of his caste but because of his noble heart. On receiving the news of his death, His wife and mother cannot bear this, and both die before he reaches home. The book ends as Madan sees no use of living without his beloved wife and mother.

The film, like the book, has shown the reality of that time as Madan represents his poor fellow countrymen. But it is also relevant today because many Nepalese are going to foreign countries to earn money for the better future of the family.

A friend of mine has got a teaching job at a government school. Since school days, her aim was to become a teacher. And she really wanted the job to support her poor family.

She was qualified for the job in all respects. She had graduated with good grades, overcoming her family’s pressure to marry early. She had taught boarding school children to pay for her studies. But in our country, politics sometimes deprives even qualified manpower from the jobs they deserve. She knew that it would not be that easy to get the job only by passing the written test. Therefore, she met the principal to request him to help her.

The principal did what he could. He himself had taught her and knew how intelligent she was. She was the top of her batch. He himself wanted her to get the job. First, he talked to the management committee and explained her qualification and qualities. She was dedicated, hard-working and intelligent. Moreover, being the eldest child in the family, she could handle and deal with children well. Her qualities pointed that it was in the interest of the school to appoint a teacher like her.

Like other candidates competing for the job, she applied. In the written test, she came first. Then came the interview. She answered most of the questions. If the committee wished, it could pass any other candidate. But they had already been positive towards her. Thus, she passed and got the job.

The growing use of games in computer has diverted young people from real physical games. Discuss some pros and cons of computer-mediated games.

In this technology-driven 21st century, computers have become a part of our daily life. Young people, particularly students, spend their time by playing on the computer. Parents are worried that these soft-games are diverting their children away from real physical games, and more importantly from studies. Playing computer games brings about positive effects such as critical thinking, easy learning and relaxation. However, they also bring about certain physical problems. As with any technology, computer-mediated games have their own pros and cons.

Among the positive effects of computer games, one is that they can be a powerful tool for study. They can be used in education. These games are very interesting for children because they use cartoons and animation. Therefore, children can learn new things easily in a funny way. With computer games, children just need to think as body is not involved. They require the players to think critically to win matches. Some of the games are very tough to win. It is good for the players because they learn how to think, plan ahead strategically and solve their problems. This helps to improve children’s imagination. Secondly, mind gets relaxed by playing computer games. After working or studying for a long time, people need some kind of relaxation. While playing on the computer, other activities are also possible such as listening to music and chat with friends face to face or through websites. Thirdly, computer games have become a socializing tool to build relationship between young people because they often discuss about how to win the games, which become their common opponent. Fourthly, computer games are better than physical games in some cases. Nowadays real physical games are not as easy as they used to be. Modern games require a lot of skill and fierce competition. This requires money to buy the playthings. And there is a chance of getting physically hurt. Computer games make this possibility nil. And a lot of online games are now free.

However, Computer games are no help in physical growth and fitness. Rather they might bring other types of health problems. The virtual games on computer screen divert young people from real physical games. Children should play outside to be physically strong. While playing with computer, children stay at one place. Sitting and playing encourages the easy eating of junk food instead of exercise. This may cause health risks such as overweight. There is no doubt that watching computer screen for a long time is not good for the eyesight caused by the light from the computer screen. This may even damage the eyesight in the long-term because of the continuous exposure to radiation. This will affect other important activities such as studies. Computer models get obsolete quickly. Computers have different CPU speeds, different size hard drives, etc. The game played well on one computer may not play well on another. Unless we upgrade the software, many new games may not run on the computer. This adds to the cost.

In conclusion, there are both advantages and disadvantages of computer games. However, if parents take proper action, those negative impacts can be avoided. For example, they can make some rules for their children, such as not allowing them to play computer games for a long time or letting them play only after they have finished their home works and academic tasks.

Vedaa , when violence takes over social issues, all you see is a mess. Inspired by a real event, the idea of Nikkhil Advani’s film is brilliant. Somewhere I feel that it could have been executed well. No doubt, Vedaa was engaging and no doubt we needed somebody to talk loud and clear and make us aware about Dalit rights and their fight for equality. But all the social messages got overshadowed by the action scenes.

Nikkhil Advani ’s film has done a decent job in bringing out the struggles of the Dalit community. Cinema being the most popular medium to bring about awareness among the masses, Vedaa could have been more impactful. John Abraham’s performance was obviously predictable, flexing his muscles and doing action moves is what he is always been doing, absolutely making no effort to upskill himself in the craft.

It is time for John to reinvent himself. We have many promising actors around who are grounded and know their craft well and most importantly they are open to suggestions. Remember this is the exact question one of the journalists asked you at a press conference as to why you are not trying out any other genre other than violence and you called him an ‘idiot’ and that ‘journalism is dead’. Think twice before you make such statements. Film journalism or journalists are not dead, it is actors like you who doesn’t know his craft are dead and finished. Work on your craft and less on building your body and learn to accept criticism in a positive way. When you think you are above everybody else that is the time when the downfall starts.

Leaving John Abraham aside, the star performers of Vedaa were by Sharvari and Abhishek Banerjee. The first half of the film was intense and we thought that the movie is going to show something more in the second half, but all the good intensions were overshadowed by excessive violence. Based on true events, Vedaa tried to depict the atrocities in the cow-belt area of Rajasthan where inter-caste marriage is considered to be a crime. But this social issue got diluted by the faulty execution of the film. The powerplay, the caste system and the lawless village atmosphere which plagues our society could have been depicted in a better way.

Sharvari Wagh is the young actress to look out for. She has literally killed it with her brilliant performances. Sharvari’s heartfelt portrayal of Vedaa , the gutsy young Dalit woman in a small town in Rajasthan and her life is heart wrenching and all she desires is that Dalits should have the right to breathe freely. And why not? Doesn’t the Indian Constitution made by our forefathers say the same, this young girl questions.

The flaw with Vedaa was that in showing excessive violence, the Dalit right issue was lost completely. Sharvari perfectly performs the role of Dalit girl showing how helpless she is, yet she wants to break free. The performance by Abhishek Banerjee is brilliant, he plays the role of a villain you can’t stop hating. But with the flaws, at least Nikkhil Advani made an effort to talk about Dalit rights which most filmmakers don’t like to touch upon.

Again I must say_, Vedaa_ is not just a typical action drama. Admitting that the story line is flawed, but you cannot deny that it is intense and immensely engaging. The movie will truly make you question from the bottom of your heart how independent are we? I draw the curtain of conclusion by saying again that it is flawed, but a brave film on Dalit rights.

Australian Film Television and Radio School

The de facto USC of the world’s second-largest movie market, the BFA was established in 1950 and has birthed the careers of China’s most esteemed filmmakers, including Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige and Jia Zhangke, plus A-list actors like Huang Xiaoming, Yao Chen and Huang Bo. Students enjoy access to cutting-edge production equipment at the academy’s four professional film studios. They also can exhibit their work at the BFA-hosted International Student Film and Video Festival, one of China’s most important platforms for emerging talent.

Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia (Italy)

Italy can boast about having the oldest — the CSC turns 90 next year — and one of the best film schools in Europe. The national institution is actually a network of local campuses across Italy specializing in different top- and below-the-line professions, from directing to film restoration. A new location on the island of San Servolo in Venice focuses on virtual reality production. Small classes (typically between six and 14 per course) and reasonable tuition of about 3,000 euros ($3,200) annually for a three-year degree make the CSC particularly appealing, but selection is highly competitive. And a working knowledge of both Italian and English is required.

HFF Munich (Germany)

Few film schools have launched their own movie markets, but that’s what Madrid’s ECAM (Escuela de Cinematografía y del Audiovisual de Madrid) did in June with its inaugural ECAM Forum, featuring a stellar list of new Spanish projects and co- productions seeking partners and funding. ECAM always has stood out among European film schools for its industry-facing approach that aims to connect students with job opportunities in the (now booming) Spanish film and TV business and nurture talent during and after graduation. The school notes that more than 72 percent of its students (about a quarter of whom are international) get a job after finishing their studies.

ESCAC (Spain)

Spanish box office champ Juan Antonio Bayona ( The Impossible, Society of the Snow ) and art house darling Mar Coll ( Three Days With the Family ) are among the acclaimed alumni of the Film and Audiovisual School of Catalonia (ESCAC), in Terrassa, north of Barcelona. The school offers bachelor’s, master’s and post-graduate degrees, in Spanish, across most professional fields, as well as a one-year introductory filmmaking course in English and a bilingual stunt academy to train the next generation of fall guys.

La Fémis (France)

Gobelins’ reputation as the world’s top animation school is hard to refute. The French institution, with campuses in Paris and Annecy, site of the legendary animation film festival, boasts alumni — Pierre Coffin of Despicable Me and Minions , Ernest & Celestine filmmaker Benjamin Renner, Monster in Paris director Bibo Bergeron — who count among the most successful and acclaimed in the business. Offering degrees in French and English, the school covers instruction in all aspects of animation, from directing to graphics and design.

Lodz Film School (Poland)

One of Europe’s oldest film schools, with an alumni list that runs from Oscar-winning directors Roman Polanski and Andrzej Wajda through legendary auteur Krzysztof Kieślowski and an astounding number of world-class cinematographers (Pawel Edelman, Dariusz Wolski, Lukasz Zal), Lodz offers full- and part-time instruction to work toward a bachelor’s, master’s or Ph.D. Tuition-free for EU citizens, international students can expect to shell out between 4,000 to 11,000 euros ($4,300-$12,000) a year depending on the program. All courses are in Polish, but the university offers a yearlong Polish-language course to anyone accepted before they begin their studies.

London Film School (U.K.)

The NFTS has continued to fortify its reputation as one of Britain’s most prestigious institutions. At the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards, student-made productions Crab Day and Jellyfish and Lobster were awarded BAFTAs in the British Short Animation and British Short Film categories. More than 60 NFTS graduates contributed to the making of The Crown across its six seasons, and funding established by the auctioning of 450-plus props from the Netflix series raised 1 million pounds ($1.2 million) to support 100 students attending NFTS over the next 20 years as part of the Left Bank Pictures- The Crown Scholarship program. In Cannes, NFTS animation Bunnyhood premiered at La Cinef, winning third prize, and in March, the NFTS secured funding of 10 million pounds ($12.8 million) from the U.K. government to expand its Beaconsfield Studios.

FAMU Prague (Czech Republic)

The Film and TV School of Academy of Performing Arts in Prague can say it inspired a cinema revolution. The Czechoslovak New Wave of the 1960s sprung mainly from such FAMU students as Milos Forman, Vera Chytilová, Jirí Menzel and Jaromil Jires, who created a new dark and funny take on life behind the Iron Curtain. A generation after the end of the Cold War, FAMU remains one of Europe’s top-tier film schools, offering one-year intensive programs and two- and three-year master’s degrees in directing, cinematography and editing, including accredited programs in English.

Toronto Film School

Vancouver film school.

VFS has added to its 15 post-secondary programs, including film, animation, video game and VFX production, with a new Virtual Art Department Content Creation program. In partnership with Pixomondo, the course will focus on virtual production in visual effects. And in another collaboration, this time with General Motors, 3D Animation and VFX students will get experience working on TV advertising and other marketing campaigns for major auto brands.

Victoria University of Wellington (New Zealand)

Located just next door to Peter Jackson’s New Zealand moviemaking empire, Victoria University of Wellington’s high-tech Miramar Creative Center offers a wealth of internship and post-graduate connections at flagship facilities like Weta Group, Park Road Post and Stone Street Studios. Victoria University of Wellington is New Zealand’s largest specialized film program, while the MCC’s emphasis is on cultivating hands-on practical expertise.
