Research Fellow

Are you an ambitious, impact-focussed researcher looking for your next challenge?  Do you have a research interest in policing and vulnerable groups, and the interactions between them and other service providers?   Do you want to further your career at a leading research-intensive University?

You will work within the ESRC Vulnerability and Policing Futures Research Centre, jointly led from the University of York and University of Leeds, with a team of over 25 leading researchers from diverse social science disciplines. Working alongside 38 regional, national and international partners, you will play an important role, assuming significant data collection responsibilities, writing up research findings, and developing and delivering knowledge translation through Continuing Professional Training and other impact work. With a doctorate or equivalent knowledge exchange, training or research experience relevant to this research field and proven experience of empirical research, you will conduct fieldwork, synthesise existing evidence, develop research-based collaborations and work with wide-ranging partners and communities to advance social change through research.

You will join a close and well-supported interdisciplinary team of seven existing full-time Centre researchers working on an exciting programme of high profile research related to policing vulnerabilities. You will play a crucial role in this research, and be able to demonstrate strong quantitative skills and experience of semi-structured interviews. You will also be expected to contribute to impact work and the development of potential future research projects.

These 1.5 full-time equivalent posts (across York and Leeds) represent an exciting opportunity to contribute to the Centre’s innovative, interdisciplinary approach. We are building knowledge from problem-based and place-based perspectives, about the interactions between vulnerability and service providers’ responses, and using these findings to build new, integrated and innovative approaches to harm reduction that address the needs of vulnerable people.

You will be line-managed directly by either Professor Kate Brown at the University of York or Professor Adam Crawford at the University of Leeds, and will work alongside other Centre researchers and Co-investigators who are experts in their fields, delivering cutting-edge research on vulnerability and policing. You will contribute to team meetings and, with the support of senior academics, play an active role in research translation, application and impact, working with police, public services, communities, vulnerable people and NGO partners on policy and practice development.

The post holder will be expected to work on campus (either at York or Leeds) at least two days per week, including Wednesdays, when we have team meetings. The role will also include the requirement to travel to research sites and events throughout the UK, sometimes for extended periods of fieldwork.

Candidates must be willing and able to complete DBS and police vetting checks once in post. Additionally, because of the requirement to undergo police vetting to enable the research to be carried out, the successful candidate must have been resident in the UK for at least three years at the time of appointment.

Read more about the Centre on  our website and  watch our ‘about us’ video .  Watch this short video if you are interested in applying.

This opportunity is available at University of Leeds and/or University of York.

Research Assistant - Job Opportunity

Post-doctoral research assistant for collaboration with local authorities review.

Are you an early career researcher looking for your first challenge? Are you interested in the role of social sciences in understanding and addressing societal change through engagement with local policy? Do you want to further your career in one of the UK’s leading research intensive Universities?

You will be working with Leeds City Council, under the supervision of Professor Adam Crawford, to undertake a variety of tasks designed to understand and improve the process of collaboration between the university and local policymakers with a view of developing partnerships and collaborations aimed at supporting evidence-based policy making.

The Leeds Social Sciences Institute (LSSI) works to promote and champion the social sciences at Leeds both across the University and in collaboration with our external partners. It fosters interdisciplinary and international research collaborations, promotes relations with external partners in the public, private and third sectors and builds capacity through the provision of training and skills development for the next generation of research leaders.

With a successfully completed PhD (this includes work submitted for assessment, but not yet examined) in a relevant field of study, you will have interests in the role of social science research in understanding and addressing societal change and the importance of collaborating with local authorities as a way to support this endeavour. You will also have experience of conducting qualitative, or qualitative and quantitative, research. Your background may be in a range of social science fields and you must be willing to work across disciplinary boundaries. You will also work with various members of Leeds City Council staff and be involved in producing short reports on the research findings for various academic, professional and non-professional audiences during your time on this project.

You will possess excellent analytical and writing skills and the ability to deal with a variety of tasks to set deadlines. The ability to work alone or as part of a team is essential, as are strong organisational, interpersonal and communication skills.

Course overview

Student in seminar room

On this rewarding course, you’ll develop the skills and knowledge to produce meaningful social research.

You’ll take core modules that will teach you how to turn social research issues and questions into workable research designs, as well as handle quantitative and qualitative data and issues such as ethics and funding applications.

You’ll also have the chance to specialise through a choice of optional modules, allowing you to pursue your interests and focus on research in disciplines such as disability studies, care, social policy analysis, criminology and evaluation of programmes and policies.

This course has recently been redesigned to meet the new postgraduate training and development guidelines of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), meaning it stands alone as an MA but will also prepare you to apply for doctoral research in the dynamic fields of social science research. You’ll be well prepared to become a specialist social science researcher, supported by expert tutors across our active research centres and institutes.

Research insight

You’ll learn in a research-intensive, stimulating environment. As well as the Leeds Social Sciences Institute which fosters collaboration, you’ll benefit from the interdisciplinary expertise hosted by the Centre for Disability Studies , Centre for Ethnicity and Racism Studies , Centre for Interdisciplinary Gender Studies and many others. All of these centres run their own calendars of events such as workshops and seminars.

Course details

You’ll start the course by building your knowledge of research design, learning to connect research problems you are interested in with methodological and theoretical perspectives and practical research strategies. Sampling and selection, choosing the right data collection and analysis methods, the ethics and politics of research design and creating research proposals will all be among the topics you explore.

You’ll also have the chance to deepen your subject knowledge with your optional module, honing in on an area that interests you. You could focus on crime, social policy analysis or evaluative research as well as disability studies, care or social thought.

In semester two, you’ll begin intensive training in analysing quantitative and qualitative data. You’ll learn to use statistical software, design surveys and questionnaires and record, code, organise and manage qualitative data. You’ll evaluate different research methods, understanding their benefits, limitations, and ethical implications.

By the end of the programme, you’ll submit a research project that puts the skills you’ve gained into practice – and perhaps lay the foundations of your future research.
