Japan vs. Germany: Cultural Differences Essay

One of the most critical elements distinguishing the perceptions of people around the world is culture, and its comparison between Japan and Germany can shed light on the way views are formed. It is to be performed with regard to the activity of citizens, linked to traditions and their inner guidance. Hence, the cultural differences between Japan and Germany can be revealed by limiting research to examining the work-family balance and traditional values, and these two aspects discussed consecutively, will be the main focus of the paper.

The first aspect of the matter is people’s activity in Japan and Germany within businesses as determined by culture and their habits and preferences in terms of distinguishing their work time and families. In this respect, the situation in these two countries can be analyzed by using the criteria of particular challenges for men and women, reflected by cultural specificities and their opportunities in this area. Thus, in both Japan and Germany, particular attention is paid to the employment of men and women to meet their children’s needs without neglecting the positions of either of them in this sphere (Ezawa, 2020; Bellmann & Hübler, 2020). In the former case, it is presented by the reported importance of work for all family members as opposed to the previously existing tendencies of prevailing men’s employment with their neglect of child rearing (Ezawa, 2020). For the latter, the necessity to work from home while taking care of kids related to both female and male workers explains the equality of their needs (Bellmann & Hübler, 2020). Hence, despite varying conditions for men and women, all people recognize the importance of combining employment and children.

Nevertheless, challenges faced by the people in Japan and Germany can be distinguished by gender and, therefore, are completely different. In the former country, the most interesting cultural phenomenon is the large numbers of the so-called ikumen or “child caring men,” who take their offspring everywhere with them (Ishii-Kuntz, 2019, p. 177). It stems from the beginning of the government’s campaign, designed by the activists concerned about the neglect of children by their fathers (Ishii-Kuntz, 2019). Its uniqueness is in the way it regulates the time spent with kids by both parents. On the contrary, in Germany, traditional hardships in this regard are determined not by relationships within families but by money since lone mothers are the most vulnerable population group (Hohnerlein, 2019). Considering these circumstances, the situation in Japan seems more favorable since not only finances but also new generations’ psychological health is addressed.

The second aspect, allowing to compare the cultural characteristics of Japan and Germany, is traditional values since they guide the development of all areas of life in the respective countries. For both Japan and Germany, they are primarily presented by the importance of specific freedoms and the respect for human rights, which determine the similarities between them. In this case, the criteria for comparison are the above two provisions. As follows from the article published by Matsui (2018), Japanese culture implied the need for a high degree of autonomy when managing the country’s affairs and people’s lives when adopting the Constitution. The same applies to Germany since the interests of its citizens are a priority for the government, and they can be respected only if they are provided with the freedom to decide for themselves (Ditlmann& Kopf-Beck, 2019). Since the Japanese resentment for outside changes and German willingness to make independent choices as well as both countries’ emphasis on human rights correlate, they are the main similarities between them.

The differences between the values in Japan and Germany are more critical for determining the varying perspectives on different matters. The criteria for comparison include the orientation on short-term and long-term shifts and the connection between people’s identity and their choices in life. For instance, in Japan, individuals recognize the importance of ethical decisions in all spheres as they are guided by particular concepts (The Government of Japan, 2022). They include mottainai, which means “using what is available so that it is not wasted,” and otagaisama or “helping each other in times of need” (The Government of Japan, 2022). In contrast to these provisions, Germans are more oriented towards safety and democracy, which means that their focus is limited to these ideas, whereas the respect for lasting changes is not ensured (Ditlmann& Kopf-Beck, 2019). In addition, their preferences include the decision-making process with a sole regard to nationalism, whereas for the Japanese, the outcomes for the environment equally matter (The Government of Japan, 2022; Ditlmann& Kopf-Beck, 2019). Therefore, it can be claimed that the course of Japan in principal initiatives is more culturally sustainable than that of Germany.

German and Japanese workers generally have different ways of approaching issues like customer service, communication, and work. While both countries are export manufacturers and have considerable engineering skills, particularly in the automobile industry, the nations are known to approach many cultural issues differently. Most Germans prefer leaving work at around 5 or 6 in the evening to go home and meet friends or have dinner with their families (Weidner, 2019). In this case, it demonstrates that Germans are more social and family-oriented people compared to the Japanese. On average, Germans are more direct and call things as they see them compared to the Japanese. Most of the time, Germans like sharing their ideas with other people. On the contrary, most Japanese feel that sharing their opinions with others is like having negative connotations. For example, debating or discussing business or politics with the Japanese is not usually possible. According to the Germans, making friends with the Japanese is pretty challenging because they seem to be a bit anti-social. On the other hand, Germans like having excellent results whenever they do something, whereas the Japanese like the process more. Therefore, Germans can have shortcuts to a problem to have a solution. For the Japanese, the process is as relevant as a result, and they will not have shortcuts to finish a job (Brückner et al., 2019). It demonstrates the Japanese are people who like excellent work and do not mind the process followed as long as they have valid results. Most Japanese have better customer service than Germans, who believe that a worker has equal rights to the client. In German culture, the customer may wait for them to be served, whereas, in Japanese culture, the customer is always right and needs to be served as fast as possible.

In conclusion, the comparison of Japan and Germany concerning their cultural characteristics showed that differences are more critical than similarities for determining governments’ and peoples’ views. In both countries, individuals are supported in employment since it is considered critical for the wellbeing of new generations and have respect for autonomy and freedoms. However, in Japan, the main focus is on improving the psychological health of families, whereas in Germany, people worry more about finances. Moreover, in the former country, it is common to think about long-term consequences, whereas for the latter, free expression and satisfaction of immediate needs prevail.

Nippon Steel boosts capital commitment to US Steel plants

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Nippon Steel Corp. raised its capital commitment Thursday by more than $1 billion to spend on U.S. Steel’s plants amid entrenched political and labor opposition to the Japanese company’s nearly $15 billion acquisition of the iconic American steelmaker.

Nippon Steel’s $1.3 billion commitment to upgrade facilities in Pennsylvania and Indiana is on top of an earlier commitment to spend $1.4 billion.

The announcement was lauded by David Burritt, U.S. Steel’s president and CEO, as evidence of Nippon Steel’s desire to “complete the transaction and expand U.S. Steel.” The United Steelworkers dismissed it as “lip service.”

The sale comes during a tide of renewed political support for rebuilding America’s manufacturing sector, a presidential campaign in which Pennsylvania is a prime battleground, and a long stretch of protectionist U.S. tariffs that analysts say has helped reinvigorate domestic steel.

In its statement, Nippon Steel said it will spend at least $1 billion to upgrade the hot strip mill at the Pittsburgh-area Irvin Plant, along with other facilities in Pennsylvania’s Mon Valley Works, and about $300 million to improve one of the blast furnaces at Gary Works in Gary, Indiana.

The commitments “far exceed” what Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel would pledge on its own and will help make the company and the American industry stronger and more competitive, Burritt said.

“The bottom line is these are investments in the future of integrated American steelmaking and the employees, families and communities that rely on it,” Burritt said in a statement.

Such improvements will extend the life of the facilities and boost productivity, Nippon Steel said. It reiterated that it expects the transaction to close in the second half of 2024, despite ongoing political and labor opposition.

The United Steelworkers is against the deal after it backed a bid by U.S.-based Cleveland Cliffs . The union filed a grievance, which was completed Aug. 15, and the case is now in the hands of the three members of the arbitration board, the union said.

The Steelworkers say they are intent on “keeping U.S. Steel U.S. owned” and are protesting what they view as the transaction’s failure to incorporate its contractual agreements on labor, pensions and other matters after they weren’t consulted on the details.

The union’s leaders dismissed Nippon’s commitment, saying that U.S. Steel has already broken a string of promises that include shutting down plants and canceling capital investments, such as one targeted for Mon Valley plants.

“Nippon is still trying to hide behind its North American shell company to shield itself from its contractual obligations to retirees and our communities, and it still needs to answer to pressing concerns regarding our critical supply chains and national security,” the union’s international president, David McCall, and negotiating committee chair Mike Millsap said in a statement. “This is just more of what we’ve seen all along: lots of words, no real change.”

With the United Steelworkers against the deal, the sale has drawn opposition from senior political figures on both sides of the aisle.

Last week, former President Donald Trump , the Republican presidential nominee, reiterated his pledge to block the deal during a campaign appearance in York, Pennsylvania.

Vice President Kamala Harris , the Democratic nominee, who is endorsed by the Steelworkers union, has not spoken about the deal since President Joe Biden ended his candidacy in July.

However, Biden, who had made his support for organized labor explicit , had all but vowed to block U.S. Steel’s sale and said in an April rally with steelworkers in Pittsburgh that the company “should remain totally American.”

Senior U.S. senators have opposed the deal on both economic and national security grounds, including Democratic Sens. Bob Casey and John Fetterman, of Pennsylvania, and Sherrod Brown, of Ohio; and Republican Sens. Ted Cruz, of Texas, Josh Hawley, of Missouri, and JD Vance, of Ohio, now Trump’s vice presidential nominee.

The Department of Justice is reviewing it for antitrust compliance, and Biden’s White House has indicated the secretive Committee on Foreign Investment in the United States will review the transaction for national security concerns.

The committee can recommend that the president block a transaction, and federal law gives the president that power.

It was not long ago that the actor and writer Joel Kim Booster first began going to auditions only to quickly realize that the roles available to him as an Asian American man were severely limited.

“It does not get better from here, no matter how many Chinese-food delivery boys you play,” he recalled being told by other Asian American actors.

But Booster kept at it. And eventually, in 2022, he got to portray a gay Asian American man in “Fire Island,” a groundbreaking rom-com that he also wrote. “So much of that movie,” Booster said, “is just a literal transcript from my life.”

As it turned out, things did get a little better for Asian American men in Hollywood during the decade that Booster spent toiling. And he senses that the momentum has continued in the two years since “Fire Island” debuted.

Many of the newest Asian and Asian American stories seem unconcerned with “the white gaze,” he said. And so “the conversation has sort of moved on for a lot of people,” he said, adding that his movie “almost feels a little retrograde now.”

Indeed, since the 2018 blockbuster “Crazy Rich Asians” became a box office hit , Asian and Asian American stories and characters have proliferated in American pop culture. And after decades of degrading, often emasculating portrayals, Asian and Asian American men like Booster have been at the center of the new work, often playing the sort of hunky hero parts that Hollywood long kept out of reach.

Slavery is a social state defined by law and customs as the most absolute involuntary form of human servitude. A slave is characterized because his work or his services are obtained by force and his physical person is considered as property of his owner, who disposes of him at his will.

From the earliest times, according to the thesis statement about slavery, the slave was legally defined as a commodity that the owner could sell, buy, give away or exchange for a debt, without the slave being able to exercise any right or personal or legal objection. Most of the time there are ethnic differences between the slave trader and the slave, since slavery thesis statement is usually based on a strong racial prejudice, according to which the ethnic group to which the trafficker belongs is considered superior to that of the slaves. It is very rare that slaves are members of the same ethnic group as the owner, but one of the few exceptions occurred in Russia during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.

The practice of slavery dates back to prehistoric times, although its institutionalization probably occurred when agricultural advances made possible more organized societies that required slaves for certain functions. To obtain them other peoples were conquered; however, some individuals sold themselves or sold their family members to pay outstanding debts; Slavery was also the punishment for those people who committed some crime.

Antiquity thesis about slavery

Slavery was an accepted and often essential situation for the economy and society of ancient civilizations. In ancient Mesopotamia, India and China slaves were used in households, in commerce, in large-scale construction and in agriculture. The ancient Egyptians used them to build royal palaces and monuments. The ancient Hebrews also used slaves, but their religion forced them to release those of their own people on certain dates. In the pre-Columbian civilizations (Aztec, Inca and Mayan) they were used in agriculture and in the army. Among the Aztecs, practitioners of various trades bought slaves to offer them in sacrifice to their patron god.

In Homer’s epic poems, slavery, as a thesis on slavery, is the logical fate of prisoners of war. Greek philosophers did not consider slave status morally reprehensible, even though Aristotle proposed freeing faithful slaves. In ancient Greece, slaves, with rare exceptions, were treated with consideration. However, the helots of Sparta (descendants of a people conquered and forced to work hard in the countryside and fight in the Spartan armies) were treated with great severity, mainly because their population was greater than that of their rulers.

In general, slaves were used as domestic workers, in urban and field jobs, in the navy and transport. Domestic slavery, in general, was less harsh, since the treatment they received was usually very familiar. Roman slavery differed from Greek slavery in several aspects. The Romans had more rights over their slaves, including life and death. Slavery was much more necessary in Rome for the economy and the social system than in ancient Greece, especially during the Empire. The well-off Romans, who owned large mansions in the city and in the countryside, depended on a large number of slaves to maintain their homes and agricultural properties.

The imperial conquests decimated the Roman armies, so that it became necessary to import a large number of foreign slaves to carry out the work of the field. The main source of slaves was war: tens of thousands of prisoners were taken to Rome as slaves; however, all those convicted of serious crimes and debtors, who sold themselves or sold their family members to pay their debts, became slaves.

Middle Ages

The adoption of the Christian religion as an official religion by the Roman Empire and its later spread during the Middle Ages in Europe and part of the Middle East, was an attempt to improve the conditions of slaves, but failed to eliminate the practice of slavery. After the fall of the Roman Empire, during the barbarian invasions between the 5th and 10th centuries, the institution of slavery became a less binding system: serfdom. Islam in the seventh century recognized from its origins the institution of slavery, although the Prophet Muhammad exhorted his followers to keep a correct deal with them. In general terms, the slaves of the Arabs, who mostly carried out domestic work, were treated with greater respect.

Slavery and Freedom

The exploration of the coasts of Africa, the discovery of America in the fifteenth century and its colonization in the following three centuries boosted considerably the modern slave trade. From the mid-fifteenth century until the 1870s, between 11 and 13 million Africans were exported to America; between 15 and 20% died during the voyages and around 10 million were enslaved in the countries of destination. Portugal, which needed workers for the countryside, was the first European country to cover its demand for work with the importation of slaves. The Portuguese started this practice in 1444, and in 1460 each year they imported 700 to 800 slaves from different parts of the African coast. These were captured by other Africans and transported to the west coast of Africa.

Soon Spain imitated this practice, although for more than a century Portugal continued to monopolize trade. During the 15th century, Arab traders from North Africa sent slaves from central Africa to the markets of Arabia, Iran and India. In the sixteenth century, the Spanish conquistadors forced the indigenous youth to cultivate large plantations and work in the mines. The Indians were not used to living as slaves and could not survive in these conditions, partly because of their lack of immunization against European diseases and harsh working conditions.

The collapse of the indigenous populations, total in the Antilles and partial in the American continent, caused the increase in the number of slaves. There were many indigenous young people who died because of the rudeness of the work, so it was decided to import to the Spanish colonies African slaves that were believed to be better able to withstand forced labor. The King of Spain Carlos I established in 1517 a system of concessions to individuals to introduce and sell African slaves in America. In the mid-sixteenth century, indigenous slavery as a legal institution disappeared in New Spain. Other modalities emerged, such as indebtedness or encomienda. Slavery thereafter would affect only African blacks.

As we can read in essay about slavery and freedom, the massive arrival of African slaves in Brazil began in the second half of the sixteenth century, but already in 1501 their presence was recorded in Santo Domingo, Puerto Rico, Cuba and Jamaica, where about 4,000 Africans entered the year. The granting of rights in the slave trade was always a real prerogative. In the late sixteenth century, the United Kingdom began to compete for the right to supply slaves to the Spanish colonies, held until then by Portugal, France, Holland and Denmark. In 1713, the British South Sea Company secured the exclusive right to supply slaves to these colonies.

The first African slaves arrived at Jamestown (Virginia) in 1619 from the hands of the first English corsairs; the slaves were subject to the so-called “limited servitude,” a legal situation proper to white, black and indigenous serfs, which was a precursor to slavery in most English colonies in the New World. With the development of the plantation system in the southern colonies, the number of imported African slaves, in line with thesis statement on slavery, increased considerably in the second half of the seventeenth century. As they became more relevant (especially in the South, where they were considered fundamental for the economy and society) it became necessary to modify the corresponding legislation. During the American War of Independence (1776-1783) they were slaves in the broadest sense of the word, with legislation that clearly defined their legal, political and social situation.

Abolition of slavery

Denmark was the first European country to abolish the slave trade in 1792, followed by the United Kingdom in 1807 and the United States in 1810, although the latter had to wait until the Civil War (1865) ended so that it would be definitively abolished the whole country. According to the essay topics about slavery, in the Congress of Vienna of 1814, the United Kingdom tried to convince other countries to adopt similar policies, getting almost all European countries to adopt a regulation on the matter or to sign a treaty that would prohibit this type of traffic.

The Treaty of Ashburton of 1842 between the United Kingdom and the United States established the maintenance of forces on the African coast to monitor compliance with the law. In 1845, the collaboration of the naval forces of the United Kingdom and France was replaced by the mutual right of ship inspection to monitor compliance with current regulations. The limitation of the number of slaves led to an improvement in their living conditions. The slaves of the French Antilles obtained freedom in 1848 and in the Netherlands in 1863.

In America, the emancipation and birth of the new republics led to the abolition of slavery: Mexico abolished it in 1813, Venezuela Colombia in 1821, and Uruguay in 1869. Only in Brazil slavery last until 1888. In the wars of independence, the black population of some countries simultaneously aligned with the Creole patriots.

Twentieth century: essay about slavery in the United States

The International Convention on Slavery, held in Geneva in 1926, and in which the 38 countries of the League of Nations participated, approved the abolition and prohibition of the slavery thesis trade and the total abolition of all forms of slavery. The proposals arising from this convention were confirmed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights adopted by the United Nations (UN) in 1948]. In 1951, the UN Committee on Slavery reported that this practice was rapidly decreasing and that only vestiges remained in some parts of the world (Mauritania was the last country to abolish it in 1980).

The Committee also reported that a large number of people still lived under bondage-like servitude. These types of servitude included peonage, child abuse and the involuntary surrender of women in marriage. In 1956, and on the recommendation of the Committee, a new conference was held in Geneva, attended by 51 countries. This conference decided to hold an additional convention on the abolition of slavery, the slave trade and institutions and practices similar to slavery. This new convention condemned servitude-like forms of slavery and established penalties for the slave trade. From that moment, any breach of its resolutions would pass to the international courts of justice.
