Building support for learning within a Doctor of Education programme

Klenowski, Val , Ehrich, Lisa , Kapitzke, Cushla , & Trigger, Kerri (2011) Correction to: Building support for learning within a Doctor of Education programme. Teaching in Higher Education , 16 (6), pp. 681-693.

Description

Professional doctorates were introduced in the 1990s for practitioners to research ‘real-world’ problems relevant to their respective workplace communities and contexts. An array of difficulties faces professional doctoral students as they transition from professionals to practitioner researchers. This study sought to understand the learning journey of a cohort of students at an Australian university and to assess whether the cohort approach provided the necessary support for students to reach their scholarly destinations. Throughout the first 18 months of the programme, focus group interviews and surveys were conducted to gauge students’ experiences and to evaluate developments for support within the programme. Utilising a socio-cultural perspective helped identify and explain the importance of shared practice in fostering learning, the development of academic and researcher identities, and the role of communities of practice. Challenges of managing time and overcoming the professional and academe divide were facilitated by the evolving developments of the programme.

Citation counts are sourced monthly from Scopus and Web of Science® citation databases.

These databases contain citations from different subsets of available publications and different time periods and thus the citation count from each is usually different. Some works are not in either database and no count is displayed. Scopus includes citations from articles published in 1996 onwards, and Web of Science® generally from 1980 onwards.

Citations counts from the Google Scholar™ indexing service can be viewed at the linked Google Scholar™ search.

Place-based Pedagogies Research Forum

doctor of education qut

Wednesday, 2nd October – Please  register at Eventbrite to attend our upcoming research forum, to ensure you are catered for and receive the zoom link on the day. This event will take place at QUT’s Kelvin Grove Campus, E Block, in Room E557. Refreshments will be served from 3.30pm. Event will commence promptly at 4pm. Place-based Pedagogies is a 90-minute event, open to all. It will offer valuable insights on the latest in place-based pedagogies.

Queensland University of Technology (QUT) and the Centre for Child & Family Studies are delighted to host Place-based Pedagogies featuring talks by Associate Professor Jeanne Iorio, Associate Professor Catherine Hamm, Associate Professor Megan Gibson, and Dr Marie White.

This research forum includes a presentation from Associate Professor Jeanne Marie Iorio & Associate Professor Catherine Hamm, titled, Response, Impact and Learning with Place. Alternative narratives are necessary to respond to the narrow perspectives of children’s learning and development that position children as deficit. Drawing from an Industry Report Defying Deficit: Children as Capable Citizens of the now (Iorio & Yelland, 2021), that is focused on rethinking the image of children, families, and communities as capable, this presentation shares an overview of the report and focuses on one of the case studies — Learning with Place© – as an example of response and impact in relation to local Place.

In April 2024, Jeanne, Catherine, Megan, and Marie were immersed in scholarly thinking as they participated in a Reggio Emilia Study Tour with U.S. Students and Professors in collaboration with Reggio Children. This experience will infuse the reflections and conversations.

An opportunity to more deeply engage with ideas generated through the presentations will be led by QUT’s Associate Professor Megan Gibson and Dr Marie White through an “In Conversation”.

At the Melbourne Graduate School of Education at the University of Melbourne, Australia, Dr Jeanne Marie Iorio is an Associate Professor whose research, teaching, and writing is centred around disrupting and rethinking accepted educational practices in early childhood and higher education. This includes rethinking quality as meaning-making; children’s relations with Place, more-than-human and materials; pedagogical documentation; post-qualitative inquiry; and pedagogies originating from the Educational Project in Reggio Emilia, Italy. Jeanne’s research has been published in multiple journals and texts, and she currently co-edits a book series Rethinking Higher Education and Qualitative Research Journal. She currently co-leads the Out and About/Learning with Place research with Dr Catherine Hamm.

Dr Catherine Hamm is an Associate Professor in the Faculty of Education at the University of Melbourne. Catherine’s teaching, post-qualitative research and writing is focused on First Nations worldviews in early childhood studies. Catherine’s work engages with critical perspectives of early childhood studies, philosophies, pedagogies and curriculum, and through the collaborative research project with Dr Jeanne Iorio, their work seeks to generate and document innovative pedagogies that support children, teachers and communities to build ongoing relationships with their local places and multispecies communities.

Dr Megan Gibson is an Associate Professor at QUT’s School of Early Childhood and Inclusive Education. Megan’s research is focused on attracting, preparing and retaining the early childhood workforce, and she has extensive experience in teaching and leadership positions including as Director of an internationally acclaimed early childhood centre at the University of Queensland. In addition to leading national industry-university collaborative research and teaching, Megan is currently the chief investigator of a 5 year study, in collaboration with several international universities centred on exemplary childhood educators at work, funded by the Australian Research Council.

Dr Marie White is a lecturer at QUT’s School of Early Childhood and Inclusive Education, whose research is centred on the early childhood workforce. With a background in early childhood education and care, Marie’s experience in teaching and leadership spans more than two decades. Her doctoral research examined the experiences of leaders in early childhood education and care

Grade Point Average (GPA)

Applicants must have a minimum overall Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.00 on a 4.00 grade scale equivalent to U.S. bachelor’s degree. If your GPA meets the minimum admission requirements, the department of major will determine if your overall academic record and test scores meet department requirements.

Note: If you do not meet the minimum 3.00 GPA, your application can be considered for admission if you:

  • Earned an undergraduate GPA of 3.0 or higher for your last 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits.
  • Worked in the program specific profession for 5+ years.
  • Obtained a letter of support from a faculty member in the department.
  • Wrote a detailed statement/essay describing your professional experience and potential to succeed academically

Degree Levels and Equivalents

All graduate school applicants must satisfy the following criteria to be considered for graduate admission to the University of Idaho:  Have earned a bachelor's degree from a college or university accredited by a recognized accrediting body, a ministry of education, or an official quality assurance organization in another country. The bachelor's degree should consist of four years of study, equivalent to 120 semester credit hours or 180 quarter hours.

An official academic record from all post-secondary education institutions attended is required. This may take some time so start this early in your application process.

In the instance that official records cannot be obtained, unofficial records may be used to consider your application. These documents are typically issued to the student and may be considered official after further review. This applies to cases where it is impossible to obtain the official records, and will be considered only on a case by case basis.

Domestic Applicants

Students must have a bachelor’s degree from a college or university accredited by a regional accrediting association. If the degree is from a recognized but not regionally accredited institution, the application will be reviewed by the department and by the College of Graduate Studies.

International Applicants

For information about equivalency and required academic credentials by country of education page, use the Degree Equivalency Guide .

The University of Idaho recommends, and reserves the right to require, a professional credential evaluation by an outside, independent party. Reasons for outside review include, but are not limited to, verification of document authenticity, potential transfer credits and the wish to expedite the processing of an application file. You are responsible for supplying the correct academic records and paying for the evaluation service. You will need to request a course-by-course evaluation. Transferring Internationally earned credits requires a course-by-course professional credential evaluation .

The preferred provider of transcript evaluations is:

  • World Education Services, Inc.

There is a list of the five services from which the University of Idaho will accept evaluations.

  • Visit our professional credential evaluation page .

Precise, word-for-word, English translations are required for all foreign language documents.

English Proficiency

The most common and widely accepted test is the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language).

Our institution code for the TOEFL is 4843.

The following are acceptable as proof of English Language Proficiency:

  • TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language): minimum overall score of 79
  • IELTS (International English Language Testing System): minimum overall score of 6.5
  • MELAB (Michigan English Language Assessment Battery): Minimum overall score of 77
  • PTE A (Pearson Test of English Academic): Minimum overall score of 58
  • U of I American Language & Culture Program (ALCP) with score of a Level 6/Advanced Pass
  • U.S. Education Earned Bachelor, or higher, degree at accredited U.S. institution
  • Duolingo English Test: Minimum Overall 110 (as of Spring 2024 admission, the minimum required score will be 115)

A waiver for this requirement is automatically granted to applicants whose education is from countries where English is an official/native language. For more information, visit our English language countries page .

  • All tests must have been taken within two years of the semester.
  • Some graduate programs have a higher requirement. If so, you will need to take the TOEFL, or equivalent test, and obtain the higher score prior to be granted regular admission.
  • Some graduate programs allow admission to be granted to applicants who qualify academically, but have not yet achieved U of I minimum English language requirements. To view information and a list of programs accepting students on this admission, visit our international requirements webpage .
