Our Master of Science (MS) in Clinical Psychology program is designed to provide you with a strong foundation in varying theoretical and clinical modalities that will help you choose and develop your clinical and professional identity. Designed with working professionals in mind, the clinical psychology master’s program is offered on campus or online. In the on-campus program, located at our convenient Santa Ana campus , take coursework in tracks varying from two to four years, with classes available in the late afternoon and evening. In the online program, you’ll learn from the same experts who teach our on-campus courses while having the resources and support to find success. 

This program meets the education requirements for licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) and/or Professional Clinical Counselor (PCC) in the state of California.

Practicum & Licensure

A culture of mentorship, program learning outcomes, program formats, christ-centered education, hands-on experience.

During the program, you will complete a practicum placement at sites such as college counseling centers, substance abuse treatment centers, community counseling centers or others such as the  Journeys at Vanguard  counseling center, located on the campus. The program will support and assist you in securing a placement at one of our more than 60 partner sites. Clinical Skill Development & Practicum

  • You will gain practical experience beginning your first semester in our clinical psychology degree as you meet with Vanguard University undergraduate volunteers and practice the clinical skills you’re learning in class. This applied experience will prepare you for your practicum placements and help you grow as a clinician.
  • You will complete supervised field experience at your practicum placement and begin earning hours towards licensure.
  • Required personal therapy will give you the opportunity to be engaged in the therapeutic process as a client.

Accreditation/Program Approval

Our degree fulfills all academic requirements that are set forth by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences for licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT) (Business and Professions Code of California Section 4980.36). The program also offers additional coursework for students interested in dual licensure as both an MFT and a Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC). With this additional coursework, the degree also fulfills all academic requirements that are set forth by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences for both licenses (Business and Professions Code of California Section 4980.36 and 4999.33). American Psychological Association (APA) Accreditation – APA only accredits doctoral level programs in psychology. Since our program is a Masters level degree APA does not accredit us.

Whether you’re studying on campus or online, our MS in Clinical Psychology is designed with the purpose of providing you with personalized attention. Both track schedules are convenient for working professionals with tracks varying from two to four years, and courses are offered in the late afternoon and evening. You’ll greatly benefit from our small class sizes which average 12 students.

In addition, you will have opportunities to connect and network with classmates, faculty and staff outside of class time. Online Track

Our online Master’s in Clinical Psychology program is available for residents of the state of California. Most courses are eight weeks long. Learning online will give you the best of both worlds—flexible online coursework and live class time with other students and faculty on a weekly basis.

On Campus Track

Our on-campus program offers 16-week courses on our Santa Ana Campus. Learning in person provides ongoing interaction with your faculty and classmates, and allows for spontaneous discussions, meals together, and making connections in between classes.

Clinical foundations i.

Clinical and theoretical foundations of the field of clinical psychology are presented with an emphasis on Client-Centered therapy and the development of beginning level skills. Course includes  supervised experience which will be used in assessing eligibility for trainee status.

Psychodynamic Theory and Treatment

A study of the theories and processes of therapy based on the psychodynamic modality. Emphasis is placed on understanding a client's internal dynamics. Application is made in relation to theoretical and DSM diagnoses, assessment and treatment of individuals as well as an understanding how this approach can be utilized in multiple settings and with multiple populations.

Cognitive-Behavioral Theory and Treatment

A study of the theories and processes of therapy based on the cognitive-behavioral modality. Focus is placed on how belief systems interface with behavior and emotion. Application is made in relation to theoretical diagnosis, assessment and treatment of individuals, particularly with anxiety based or related conditions.

Psychology, Theology and Spirituality

Explores the integration of psychology, theology, and spiritual formation and how it affects the mental health of the client. Consideration given to the role of the therapist and the therapeutic relationship with an emphasis on the Christian faith.

The university requirements for program admission below must be met before an application is considered complete.  

  • Online application for admission
  • Non-refundable $45  application fee  
  • Request Official Transcripts from  any  colleges or universities attended. Vanguard graduates need only request transcripts from institutions attended after Vanguard.

Required Supporting Materials

Applicants for the MS in Clinical Psychology  should also submit the following:

  • References: (3) letters of recommendation from people who can speak about various aspects of your suitability, such as academic ability (professor), professional performance (i.e. work performance), clinical/leadership/relationship ability, or other relevant experience. The recommender cannot be a family member or friend.
  • Personal Statement (750 words): Provide a detailed statement describing your significant life experiences and how they have lead you to pursue a degree in Clinical Psychology. In addition, discuss your future plans and professional goals as a result of obtaining this degree.
  • Resume/Curriculum Vitae: Provide a detailed resume or curriculum vitae listing all employment, experience, education, training, etc.

Prerequisite Courses or Requirements

Applicants should also have completed:

  • Introduction to Statistics
  • Psychopathology or Abnormal Psychology
  • Developmental Psychology or Human Development
  • Counseling Theories or Theories of Personality

Admissions Requirements - International Applicants

To apply for a degree program at Vanguard, the following requirements must be fulfilled in addition to meeting the domestic applicant and any program-specific admission requirements specified above.

  • Evalution of Official Transcript(s):  All transcripts reflecting prior coursework must be submitted. Transcripts must be evaluated, not just translated, by an official agency.
  • Official TOEFL ( Test of English as a Foreign Language ) Scores:  The minimum TOEFL score requirement is 80 on the web version. If English is the primary spoken language and medium of instruction at the institution(s) attended and at least two years of full-time study occurred at such institution(s), the TOEFL may be waived.
  • Affidavit of Financial Support: If supported by personal and/or family funds, submit this form with an original bank statement in U.S. currency reflecting bank balance availability of the total amount listed below. If sponsored by a government or other official agency, an official letter stating that the funding and/or scholarship is valid for use at Vanguard University must be submitted.   • Copy of Valid Passport
  • Students applying within the U.S. must submit copies of their visa , I-94 , and if on a student visa, copies of their I-20 A-B Form .

Scholarships

Vanguard University offers graduate academic scholarships for the biotechnology, clinical psychology, education, leadership studies, organizational psychology, and theology programs. These 10-15% tuition scholarships are based on cumulative undergraduate GPA calculations.  You will automatically be awarded a scholarship if you qualify. Vanguard University also offers a colleague discount for the MSN and post graduate certificate programs and the Ministry Grant for applicants working full time in ministry as ordained or licensed ministers or missionaries. Financial Aid

Financial aid is offered through the FAFSA application. Please see the  Financial Aid  page for further information and talk to your admissions counselor. 

Once an applicant’s file is complete, with all required items submitted, the file is forwarded to the department for review and potential admissions interview invitation.

From there, the Office of Graduate & Professional Education will inform the applicant of their admissions decision via email with a) a program acceptance to the university, or b) a program denial with recommendations for improving their file for potential resubmission.

Course Catalog 2024-2025

Psychology, accelerated graduate degree.

Undergraduates accepted to an Accelerated Graduate Degree (AGD) program for the general Psychology Masters with or without an Emphasis in School Psychology program can begin taking master’s level classes while still in the B.A. or B.S. program in psychology. These graduate credits can be used for both the undergraduate and graduate level coursework and will help facilitate an easy and fast transition into the general Psychology Master’s program if a student is accepted. In order to be accepted into the AGD, please see your advisor to see if you qualify for one of these positions. You must have junior standing and a GPA Of 3.3 but communication with your academic advisor prior to application is essential. 

AGD applicants who meet these program GPA admission requirements are exempt from submitting GRE scores and letters of recommendation to be considered for formal admission to the general Psychology Master's program. It is important to note that during the last semester of the undergraduate degree program, students in the AGD program must apply for formal admission to the graduate program for the master's program in Psychology either the General or School Psychology emphasis. 

Undergraduates accepted to an Accelerated Graduate Degree (AGD) program can begin taking graduate level classes while still in their undergraduate program. These graduate credits can be used for both the undergraduate and graduate level coursework and will help facilitate an easy and fast transition into a graduate program if a student is accepted. To be accepted into the AGD, please see your advisor to see if you qualify for one of these positions.

Programs offering an AGD option may allow up to 12 hours of graduate level coursework to also count towards an undergraduate degree.

Graduate coursework/credit will appear only on the graduate transcript, and graduate course grades will be calculated towards the graduate GPA.

Admission Requirements

Eligibility requirements for accelerated graduate degree program.

  • Must have completed at least 90 hours toward the bachelor’s degree.
  • Must have at least a 3.30 overall undergraduate GPA.
  • Must have at least a 3.30 GPA in the major.
  • Must have completed an introductory statistics course.
  • Must have completed an experimental psychology course.
  • Must have completed at least nine hours of psychology at the 300-400 level.
  • Must meet the admission requirements of the chosen master’s degree program.

For admission to the AGD in psychology, students must meet the requirements established by the university. In addition, applicants must have completed an Introductory Statistics course and an experimental psychology course and at least nine hours of psychology at the 300-400 level. Students admitted to the AGD program are being admitted to the general psychology MA program. Admission to the M.A. program with an emphasis in clinical psychology or school psychology requires a separate application and additional requirements must be met as outlined in the graduate catalog.

AGD Credits: 12 credits that must be approved in the plan of study.

How to Apply

  • During the junior or senior year, eligible students should meet with their Undergraduate Advisor and the Director of Graduate Studies of their chosen Master’s degree program to develop an AGD plan of study. Any changes to the AGD plan of study must be approved by the undergraduate advisor and director of graduate studies in writing to the dean of the college.
  • The student’s acceptance into the AGD program is subject to the approval of the plan of study by the dean of the college.
  • Students accepted into the AGD program should apply for admission to the chosen master’s degree program for the first semester after the bachelor’s degree is awarded. Applications should be submitted during the last semester of the senior year.

Students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0 for all graduate credit toward their master’s degree program.

Withdrawal from the AGD

A student may withdraw at any time from the AGD by informing the undergraduate advisor, the director of graduate studies and the dean of the college in writing. A student’s status will then revert to the standard undergraduate degree program. Any graduate hours earned must be approved for use in fulfillment of bachelor’s degree requirements by the student’s undergraduate dean.

From Undergraduate to Graduate Student

Beginning with the semester after the student has earned the bachelor’s degree and has been accepted into a master’s degree program, the student is enrolled in the graduate program and is assessed tuition and fees at the graduate rate. All rules regarding graduate education will apply to the student once admitted into the master’s degree program.

Two current psychology graduate faculty discuss how the current events, including the COVID-19 pandemic and closures of campuses, might impact the admission and application process and share some general advice on what to expect.

Ana M. Franco-Watkins, PhD , is professor and chair, department of psychological sciences, Auburn University. Franco-Watkins works closely with the program directors of the department's four graduate programs (applied behavioral analysis, clinical psychology, cognitive and behavioral sciences, and industrial and organizational psychology) on graduate applications and admissions. In addition, as chair, she also works with other psychology department chairs through the Council of Graduate Departments of Psychology to address COVID-19's impacts on graduate admission. 

Jerry Kernes, PhD , is professor, program chair, and director of clinical training PsyD program in clinical psychology, University of La Verne. Kernes is responsible for the administration and oversight of all aspects of the PsyD program. His duties include student recruitment and retention, practicum and internship training, and student advising. He chairs the program admissions committee.

Psychologists study human and animal behavior and apply knowledge in a variety of ways. They are concerned with how organisms perceive and adapt to the world around them; how organisms learn, store and process information; and how organisms develop, mature, and age. Psychology majors are also interested in the physiology of organisms, social relationships, problem solving, creativity, intelligence, deviant behavior, motivation and measurement. Individuals who pursue psychology must be good observers and able to record and interpret what they observe. Like all scientists, they must have curiosity, patience, diligence and commitment to precision and accuracy. Psychology is an exciting combination of research, theory and application that students find rewarding and challenging.

The Student Experience

  • Students have the opportunity to conduct individual research during their junior and senior years. Recent projects include studies on the effect of gender on criminal sentencing, texting behavior and driving, social media and personality, and learning styles. 
  • Psychology majors have presented their research at local, regional, and national professional conferences and submitted their research for publication in undergraduate and professional research journals. 
  • Students also have the opportunity to earn elective credit or internship credit for volunteer work in various community organizations including mental health centers, rape crisis and spouse abuse agencies, and agencies that serve special needs children. 
  • The Gerontology Certificate program, administered through the Department of Psychology, offers students a foundation of knowledge and skills in the study of aging.

Students majoring in psychology are involved in many professions including: behavioral consulting; counseling; teaching; research; forensic psychology; government agencies; business and marketing; and care providers in hospitals and community mental health agencies.

Psychology Minor

A minor in psychology offers students majoring in other fields a foundation in core areas of psychology through course work in psychological statistics, experimental psychology, developmental psychology, and clinical psychology. A total of 22 credit hours in approved course work is required to complete the minor.

Behavioral Neuroscience Concentration

For a concentration in behavioral neuroscience, students are required to take Human Neuropsychology, Physiological Psychology, and Neuroscience Foundations. The remaining eight credits can be completed from a list of preapproved course offerings.

Degrees and GPA Requirements

Bachelors degree: All graduate applicants must hold an earned baccalaureate from a regionally accredited college or university or the recognized equivalent from an international institution.

University GPA requirement: The minimum grade point average for admission consideration for graduate study at the University of Denver must meet one of the following criteria:

A cumulative 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for the baccalaureate degree.

A cumulative 2.5 on a 4.0 scale for the last 60 semester credits or 90 quarter credits (approximately two years of work) for the baccalaureate degree.

An earned master’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution or the recognized equivalent from an international institution supersedes the minimum GPA requirement for the baccalaureate.

A cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for all graduate coursework completed for applicants who have not earned a master’s degree or higher.

Program GPA requirement: The minimum undergraduate GPA for admission consideration for this program is a cumulative 3.0 on a 4.0 scale. Please visit for more details on the program specifc GPA requirement.

Applicants WITHOUT a psychology background (major or minor), must meet the department's psychology prerequisite prior to matriculation.  The psychology prerequisite can be met either through psychology coursework or by obtaining a score of at least 660 or higher on the psychology subject GRE exam. Applicants should state how they plan to meet the psychology prerequisite in their application. For the psychology coursework prerequisite, applicants must complete four (4) psychology courses earning a 'B' or better in these classes from a regionally accredited institution. Applicants offered admission should be aware that all psychology classes must be completed before registration in September.

Official scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), C1 Advanced or Duolingo English Test are required of all graduate applicants, regardless of citizenship status, whose native language is not English or who have been educated in countries where English is not the native language. Your TOEFL/IELTS/C1 Advanced/Duolingo English Test scores are valid for two years from the test date.

The minimum TOEFL/IELTS/C1 Advanced/Duolingo English Test score requirements for this degree program are:

We require a scanned copy of your transcripts from every college or university you have attended. Scanned copies must be clearly legible and sized to print on standard 8½-by-11-inch paper. Transcripts that do not show degrees awarded must also be accompanied by a scanned copy of the diploma or degree certificate. If your academic transcripts were issued in a language other than English, both the original documents and certified English translations are required.

Transcripts and proof of degree documents for postsecondary degrees earned from institutions outside of the United States will be released to a third-party international credential evaluator to assess U.S. education system equivalencies. Beginning July 2023, a non-refundable fee for this service will be required before the application is processed.

Upon admission to the University of Denver, official transcripts will be required from each institution attended.

Two (2) letters of recommendation are required.  Letters should be submitted by recommenders through the online application.

Your program will typically be fully funded for five years thanks to stipend grant support and guaranteed teaching fellowships. Tuition support is also available for a six-year program. Academic Background

While an undergraduate concentration in psychology is not required, some social science coursework is recommended. Because the program is heavily quantitatively oriented, college-level math and statistics are also advised. Research experience is extremely helpful; successful applicants have often worked for professors, done research projects as part of college courses, written an undergraduate thesis, or volunteered in a psychology research lab.

Please Note: Before making the decision to apply, the program in psychology suggests checking individual faculty/lab websites or emailing faculty directly to inquire whether they plan to consider applicants for fall 2025 admission. It’s important to note that while individual faculty members may have every intention of bringing in a new student this year, we cannot guarantee that they will all be able to do so. The total number of offers of admission to be extended by the graduate program is based on applicant preparedness and fit, availability of university advising and support resources, and target class size. Some of these factors are not able to be determined until after the applicant pool has been finalized.

Admission requirements.

  • A non-refundable, non-transferable $50 application fee will be posted on the current application upon enrollment (waived for qualifying service members, veterans, and military spouses – documentation verifying military status is required) .
  • Send official college transcripts (mailed as sealed, unopened copies or sent via a direct electronic transcript system). A regionally or nationally accredited master’s degree with at least a 3.0 GPA is required for admission in good standing.
  • Contact information  for 2 recommenders is required (approved recommenders are the student’s former college professors or supervisors).
  • Statement of Purpose  is required (1,000-1,500 words, double spaced).
  • Departmental approval is required.
  • Applicants whose native language is other than English must submit official scores for the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an approved alternative assessment. Preliminary Acceptance

If you are sending in a preliminary transcript for acceptance, you must:

  • Be in your final term and planning to start your doctoral degree after the last day of class for your master’s degree.
  • Complete a Master’s Self-Certification Form confirming your completion date. You may download the form from the Forms and Downloads page or contact an admissions counselor to submit the form on your behalf.
  • Submit an official transcript to confirm that you are in your final term. The preliminary transcript must show that you are within 6 credit hours of completion for a 30-48 credit hour master’s degree or within 9 credit hours of completion for a 49+ credit hour master’s degree.
  • Send in an additional, final official transcript with a conferral date on it by the end of your first semester of enrollment in the new doctoral degree.

The PhD is conferred upon candidates who have demonstrated substantial scholarship and the ability to conduct independent research and analysis in Psychology.

A student typically concentrates in one of several areas within Psychology. Across all areas, the training program emphasizes the development of research competence, and students are encouraged to develop skills and attitudes that are appropriate to a career of continuing research productivity.

Two kinds of experience are necessary for this purpose. One is the learning of substantial amounts of theoretical, empirical, computational and methods information . A number of courses and seminars are provided to assist in this learning, and students are expected to construct a program in consultation with their advisor(s) to obtain this knowledge in the most stimulating and economical fashion.

A second aspect of training is one that cannot be gained from the courses or seminars. This is first-hand knowledge of, and practical experience with, the methods of psychological investigation and study . Therefore, students are expected to spend half of their time on research and to take no more than 10 units of course work per quarter, beginning in the first quarter.

Students achieve competence in unique ways and at different rates. Students and advisors work together to plan a program to accomplish these objectives.

*Graduate student admissions are among the most important decisions we make as a department. Like many other PhD programs around the US and abroad, we have wrestled with the question of whether we should continue to require that applicants to our PhD program submit scores from the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) as part of their application. After extensive review of the scientific literature and robust discussion among our faculty, we have decided to continue to make submission of GRE scores optional, but to Recommend that students submit GRE scores if they are able to do so. We wanted to share our candid thoughts on this here.  

A number of empirical and review papers have noted that performance on the GRE is not a strong predictor of performance on a number of graduate school metrics (e.g., correlation with graduate school GPA = .21-.31, which represent small to medium effect sizes; Woo et al., 2023) and that the fact that the significant group differences (by race/ethnicity and gender) in GRE scores suggest it may discourage those from underrepresented groups from applying to PhD programs. Other research has shown that although there are limitations to the GRE, other potential predictors of success in graduate school have even smaller correlations with such outcomes, and removing the GRE would lead us to rely on these other potentially biased factors, such as where a person received their undergraduate degree, what research lab they had the opportunity to train in, and letters of recommendation.(1) We have heard anecdotally from current and former PhD students (including those historically underrepresented in PhD programs) who argue that the GRE helped them demonstrate their abilities when they didn’t attend a top undergraduate institution or work in a well-known research lab.  

On balance, we acknowledge that the GRE is an imperfect test and should not be used as the single deciding factor in admissions; however, we fear that excluding it altogether will introduce more, not less, bias into the admissions decision-making process. Thus, we have decided to keep the submission of GRE scores optional, but to recommend that students submit their scores if they are able to do so.  

We know that many students might expect that we are looking for near-perfect scores as a requirement for admission. We are not. We do not use a rigid threshold for GRE scores, and take it into consideration with other factors (e.g., strong performance in undergraduate statistics might be used to demonstrate quantitative abilities in place of strong performance on the quantitative section of the GRE). To be transparent about this, we note that our past 10 years’ of admitted PhD applicants have had scores on the GRE ranging on the Quantitative section from the 38th to the 98th percentile, and on the Verbal section ranging from the 59th to the 99th percentile.(2 )

We will continue to work toward determining how to make admissions decisions in a way that identifies the candidates who match best with what our PhD training program has to offer and in doing so may make further adjustments to our admissions requirements in future admissions cycles.

The PhD program in Psychology trains students at the highest level in one of three specialty areas of psychology: Brain, Behavior, and Cognition (BBC), Developmental Science (DS), and Clinical (C). Upon completion of the PhD, students will be thoroughly prepared for postgraduate training and to eventually assume teaching and/or research positions in academia or industry or to obtain clinical positions. An undergraduate degree in psychology or a related discipline (e.g., neuroscience) is recommended.

Learning Outcomes

Students graduating with a PhD in Psychology (Brain, Behavior & Cognition) are expected to:

  • Demonstrate mastery of existing theory and research.
  • Develop the ability to conduct sound, independent ethical research.
  • Demonstrate abilities to conduct scholarly and other activities in a professional and ethical manner.
  • Demonstrate teaching abilities.

Students graduating with a PhD in Psychology (Clinical) are expected to:

  • Learn to evaluate existing research and theory and to conduct independent clinical research.
  • Develop ability to write grants.
  • Develop the skills and knowledge necessary for communicating with patients, conducting clinical interviews and assessments, and providing treatment.
  • Acquire and apply knowledge of issues of individual and cultural diversity.

Students graduating with a PhD in Psychology (Developmental Science) are expected to:

  • Develop the ability to conduct sound, independent research.
  • Demonstrate abilities to conduct scholarly and other professional activities.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of professional ethical standards.

Course Requirements

Doctoral students must complete a minimum of 16 term courses (64 units) of graduate work for the Brain, Behavior, and Cognition and the Developmental Science PhD tracks. A minimum of 20 courses of graduate work (80 units) is required for the Clinical PhD track. Required courses for all tracks are as follows:

  • CAS PS 711 Statistics in Psychology I
  • CAS PS 712 Statistics in Psychology II

For specific course requirements for each track, please visit our website . Courses are selected in consultation with the major advisor, who may determine that additional work is required.

Language Requirement

There is no foreign language requirement for this degree.

Qualifying Examinations

PhD candidates must also satisfy a qualifying requirement or pass a qualifying examination in the area of specialization.

Dissertation and Final Oral Examination

Candidates shall demonstrate their abilities for independent study in a dissertation representing original research or creative scholarship. A prospectus for the dissertation must be completed and approved by the readers, the Director of Graduate studies, and the Department Chair/Program Director. Candidates must undergo a final oral examination in which they defend their dissertation as valuable contributions to knowledge in their fields and demonstrate a mastery of their fields of specialization in relation to their dissertation. All portions of the dissertation and final oral examination must be completed as outlined in the GRS General Requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy Degree .

Research Requirement

Each student must satisfy a research requirement during the first year, which is initiated by the director of the program and the student’s advisor.

Two categories of requirements are necessary for the MA degree en route to all the PhD programs. They should be completed within three years of admission. Specific graduate programs may have their own additional requirements:

  • Courses: A minimum of eight graduate-level courses, including PS 711 Statistics in Psychology I. Students must obtain prior departmental approval for any course they wish to take outside the department or the University.   • Research Activity: Requirements vary by program. All students are engaged in research beginning in their first year.

Clinical Psychology PhD

Welcome to the doctoral program in Clinical Psychology Program at Teachers College, Columbia University. The Clinical Psychology Program was founded in 1947-1948. It was APA-accredited in the first group of programs that were reviewed for accreditation in 1948 and that status has been uninterrupted. Our most recent site visit from the APA occurred in 2021, and we have been accredited until June 2031.

Our program operates according to a scientist-practitioner model. We are, thus, dedicated to training students to generate empirically-based knowledge in clinical psychology and to perform clinical work that is constantly informed by traditional and emerging scholarship in the field. We expect our students to learn to expertly produce, analyze, and discuss scientific material. We also expect our students to become proficient at providing clinical services to a diverse population. And, most importantly, we expect our students to learn to integrate these two goals. As our mission statement in the TC catalog notes, “The driving goal of our Clinical Psychology Program is to provide rigorous training in both contemporary clinical science and clinical assessment and intervention.”

A good deal of the training, especially that related to research, occurs through intensive participation in a research lab directed by a specific faculty mentor. It is this context, through this lab, that students develop their scientific skills and begin presenting their work at professional conferences and publishing in professional journals. Each student, of course, is also part of a cohort of doctoral students with whom they learn, collaborate, and socialize.

In recent years, graduates of our doctoral program have gained employment in tenure-track academic positions, as research scientists in medical schools, and as clinical researchers in a broad range of treatment settings. In addition, many of our graduates practice independently as well as in community settings for under-served populations.

The Dean Hope Center for Educational and Psychological Services (DHCEPS) is an integral part of the teaching and training programs in Clinical, Counseling, School Psychology, Learning Disability and Reading Specialist. The Center works in a two-folded way; first it offers students the opportunity to integrate theoretical coursework with practicum experience within a multidisciplinary setting. This training is foreseen by highly qualified supervisors. Simultaneously, the DHCEPS offers affordable psychological and educational services to individuals, couples, and families residing in the nearby neighborhood of the New York City area. The emphasis is on respecting and working with clients from diverse, multicultural contexts regardless of age, racial and ethnic background, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, and religious or cultural affiliations. The Program requires the following:

The completion of 95 points of academic credit during three to four years of residence at the College.

A full-time, twelve-month clinical internship during the fourth or fifth year of study.

An original piece of empirical research, which also serves as a qualifying paper, to be completed during the second year of study.

A passing grade on the certification examination (on Research Methods) during the third year of study.

A Clinical case presentation as well as a research presentation, during the third year, each demonstrating the student’s ability to integrate theory, research, and practice.

A doctoral dissertation, which must be completed no later than the seventh year after matriculation.

During the first year of study, in addition to participating in a research lab, doctoral students typically take the following didactic courses: Ethical and professional issues in clinical psychology (CCPX 5030); Psychological measurement (HUDM 5059); courses on statistics and modeling; Research methods in social psychology (ORLJ 5040); Child psychopathology (CCPX 5034); Adult psychopathology (CCPX 5032); History and systems of psychology (CCPX 6020); and Dynamic psychotherapies (CCPX 5037). Students also take two semesters of psychological testing and diagnostic assessment (CCPX 5330, CCPX 5333) and a course in clinical interviewing (CCPX 5539).

Second Year

During their second year, students’ didactic courses include Brain and behavior (BBS 5068, 5069); Cognition, emotion, and culture (CCPX 5020); Psychotherapy with children (CCPX 5531); Cognitive, behavioral, and interpersonal therapies (CCPX 5038); Clinical work with diverse populations (CCPX 5036); and Seminar on life course development (HUDK 6520). In addition, students sign up for a full year of research practicum with a faculty member (culminating in an empirical second- year project), a full-year adult psychodynamic psychotherapy practicum (CCPX 6335), and an additional elective full-year clinical rotation (e.g., on child and adolescent psychotherapy; on neuropsychological assessment).

Third-year didactic courses include Group dynamics: A systems perspective (ORL 5362); and Dissertation seminar (CCPX 7500). There is also a full-year advanced psychodynamic clinical practicum (CCPX 6336) and a one-semester supervision and consultation practicum (CCPX 6333). Most students also elect a full-year family therapy practicum (CCPJ 6363).

Fourth and Fifth Year

The fourth year is typically focused on clinical externship (CCPX 5230) and extensive work on the dissertation. A full-year fourth year psychotherapy practicum (CCPX 6338) is recommended, though not required. Year five is usually spent on a full- year clinical internship (CCPX 6430).

The program allows only 12 points of graduate work from another institution to be transferred. No transfer credits are awarded for practica, workshops, or independent study.
