Masterwork Research: Apex is the Special Research for catching Apex Shadow Lugia and Ho-Oh . It was given to Pokémon GO Tour: Johto Ticket holders after they complete Pokémon GO Tour: Johto Special Research and catch Celebi .

During the Pokémon Go Tour: Johto , players could unlock this new Masterwork Research and earn a chance to catch brand new versions of Shadow Ho-Oh and Shadow Lugia. What is the Apex Masterwork Research in Pokémon Go?

Players who completed the Special Research during the Pokémon Go Tour: Johto unlocked the second Masterwork Research line. Like the previous year's Masterwork Research line: All-in-One #151 , this research is designed to be completed over a long period of time. This Masterwork Research will reward players with encounters with Apex Shadow Ho-Oh and Apex Shadow Lugia . These new, boosted versions of the Johto Legendaries will know boosted versions of their signature moves: Sacred Fire+ and Aeroblast+. When purified, these moves will change to Sacred Fire++ and Aeroblast++

• Earn 100,000 XP for ten Hyper Potions
• Complete 100 Field Research tasks for 1,000 XP
• Catch 100 different species of Pokémon for an Apex Shadow Ho-Oh encounter

Completion Rewards: 20 Ho-Oh Candy, 1,000 Stardust, 1,000 XP

• Earn a heart with your Buddy Pokémon 30 days in a row for a Poffin
• Send 50 gifts to friends for a Lure Module
• Open ten gifts for a Lucky Egg

Masterwork Research: Apex is a long-running quest in Pokemon Go, with Apex Shadow Lugia & Ho-Oh encounters offered up as a reward for completing every task.

The second Masterwork Research quest in Pokemon Go, Masterwork Research: Apex, is now live for players who previously purchased a Tour Johto ticket and have since completed the event-exclusive Special Research quest .

Masterwork Research quests are meant to be completed over a long period of time, so don’t be surprised if it takes you months to finish. Along the way, you’ll unlock encounters with Apex Shadow Lugia and Apex Shadow Ho-Oh .

Apex Shadow Lugia & Ho-Oh rewards explained

Here are all of the steps, tasks, and rewards for the Masterwork Research Apex quest in Pokemon Go:

Step 1 of 4

• Earn 100,000 XP – 10 Hyper Potions
• Complete 100 Field Research tasks – 1,000 XP
• Catch 100 different species of Pokemon – Apex Shadow Ho-oh encounter

Pokemon Go Masterwork Research Apex quest explained

The Masterwork Research: Apex quest is only available to players who purchased a ticket to Pokemon Go Tour Johto, which took place on February 26, and logged in at least once during the event to claim the event-exclusive Special Research quest .

Once the Pokemon Go Tour Johto Special Research quest has been completed, the Masterwork Research: Apex quest will unlock automatically. This is a huge challenge with no deadline, so it’s meant to be completed over a long period of time.

For example, one of the challenges in Step 2 requires you to earn a heart with your buddy for 30 days in a row, which puts an unavoidable month-long block on progressing further. Also, if you miss a single heart, your 30 days will start over again.

While it’s important to keep an eye on your tasks and make sure you’re making progress on them, it’s a good idea to view this Masterwork Research: Apex quest as a side challenge while you do other things in Pokemon Go.

The two big rewards for completing the Masterwork Research: Apex quest are encounters with Apex Shadow Ho-Oh and Apex Shadow Lugia, which are the first Apex Shadow Legendaries to ever appear in Pokemon Go.

So what are Apex Shadows? Well, to put it simply, they’re more powerful variations of normal Shadow Pokemon. Each one has a boosted special move that can be boosted even more when purified. These are as follows:

• Apex Shadow Lugia: Aeroblast+ (200 power) to Aeroblast ++ (225 power)
• Apex Shadow Ho-Oh: Sacred Fire+ (135 power) to Sacred Fire++ (155 power)

These power increases are only applicable to Raids and Gyms, not battles in the Go Battle League.

Remember, you can only catch Apex Shadow Lugia and Apex Shadow Ho-Oh in Pokemon Go by completing the Masterwork Research: Apex quest – time to start working on those tasks!

The Apex Masterwork Research is now available to complete in Pokémon GO   for players who purchased a Tour Johto ticket. In order to unlock the Apex Masterwork Research quests, players will need to have purchased their ticket and completed the exclusive Special Research quests that accompanied the ticket. The Masterwork Research series is designed to be grueling, and they make take players several months to complete. Unlike other Pokémon GO Special Research tasks  and events, the Apex Masterwork Research does not have a time limit.

The Apex Masterwork Research is divided into a series of four parts. To reach the next phase, players will need to complete all of the objectives in the first part, and each part offers a reward for clearing both the phase and the individual objectives. For the first part, players will need to earn 100,000 XP, which will reward 10 Hyper Potions that can be used to heal damaged Pokémon. Additionally, players will need to complete 100 Field Research Tasks for a reward of 1,000 XP. Finally, to finish the first part, players need to catch 100 different species of Pokémon to earn an encounter with  Apex Shadow Ho-o in Pokémon GO . To reward players for completing all three objectives in part 1, they will receive 1,000 XP, 1,000 Stardust, and 20 Ho-Oh Candy.

Once players complete part 1 of the Apex Masterwork Research tasks, they will unlock part 2. The first objective of this part is for players to earn a heart with their buddy 30 days in a row for a reward of one Poffin, which is a treat that can be fed to Pokémon to increase friendship. Next, players will need to send 50 gifts to their friends to receive a Lure Module. For the final objective of part 2, players will need to open 10 gifts from friends to earn one Lucky Egg in Pokémon GO . Accordingly, players will be able to complete this stage quickly if they have a lot of active friends. For completing all three tasks in this stage, players will earn 2,000 XP, three Rare Candy, and 2,000 Stardust.

Pokémon GO: Apex Masterwork Research Parts 3 and 4

For part 3, Pokémon Go players will need to hatch 10 Eggs for a reward of 3,000 Stardust. To make this task easier, players may want to purchase additional incubators. Players will also need to battle and defeat 30 Team Go Rocket members to receive their prize of one Rocket Radar, which will allow players to uncover the boss. The final objective in part 3 is to defeat the Team Go Rocket Boss, which rewards players with three Silver Pinap Berries. For completing all three tasks in part 3, players will receive 3,000 XP, 3,000 Stardust, and an encounter with Apex Shadow Lugia in Pokémon GO .

The final part of the Apex Masterwork Research, part 4, only requires players to claim three prizes. They should claim their 3,000 XP, 4,000 Stardust, and 5,000 XP. Once complete, players can claim the final prize of the series, which is 5,000 XP, 20 Lugia Candy, and 5,000 Stardust. The most enticing rewards of the challenge are Apex Shadow Lugia and Apex Shadow Ho-oh, which are more powerful versions of the normal Shadow Pokémon. Additionally, if players choose to purify the Apex Shadow Pokémon, their special move will receive a permanent stat boost.

All Pokémon Go Tour: Johto Apex Masterwork Research task and rewards

Each Pokémon Go Tour event gives Niantic an opportunity to celebrate past Pokémon games and the journeys that they embody, all while providing players with an entirely unique experience. 

As part of that experience, completing the Go Tour event-exclusive Special Research unlocks new Masterwork Research, which is also true for Pokémon Go Tour: Johto. 

Anyone who can complete the Go Tour: Johto Special Research will unlock the Go Tour: Johto Masterwork Research—simply titled Apex. This will give players a chance to encounter the new, more powerful variants of Shadow Ho-Oh and Shadow Lugia, Apex Shadow Ho-Oh and Apex Shadow Lugia.

For that reason, Niantic does not put a time limit on Masterwork Research, giving players as much time as needed to finish it and claim the rewards that are hidden within.

While the first Masterwork Research quest was released during early 2021, for the purpose of capturing the all-powerful Mew, Masterwork Research: Apex is here for you to complete in order to obtain two elusive and powerful Legendary Pokemon: Apex Shadow Lugia and Apex Shadow Ho-Oh.

How do you Unlock Masterwork Research in Pokemon GO?

Completing this quest is a whole different ballgame; unlocking this quest comes first. In order to unlock Masterwork Research: Apex, you will need to purchase a Pokemon Go Tour: Johto ticket and simply play Pokemon GO during the event.

Doing this will unlock the Pokemon Go Tour: Johto special research quest. Once you have completed the quest, Masterwork Research: Apex will now be unlocked!

In Feb. 2023, a set of Masterwork Research dropped in Pokémon Go, rewarding a Shiny Jirachi to those who complete it. “Wish Granted” is a lengthy set of Special Research made to keep you busy for a while, just like the Johto Masterwork Research from the previous year.

In order to get these tasks, you’ll need to buy the “Masterwork Research: Wish Granted” pass in the shop for $4.99 . You can only purchase the pass up until March 20, but once you buy and start it, there is no time limit for completing it. This makes sense, as the tasks in the set should take the average player weeks, if not months, to complete.

Note that a different version of this research was made available to players who attended the Go Tour: Hoenn event in Las Vegas, but we list the steps to the global version below.

Wish Granted step 1 of 6

• Catch 385 Pokémon from the Kanto region (385 XP)
• Catch 385 Pokémon from the Johto region (385 XP)
• Catch 385 Pokémon from the Hoenn region (385 XP)
• Get a Gold Hoenn Medal (30 Ultra Balls)

Rewards : 10 Kyogre Candy, 10 Groudon Candy, and 10 Rayquaza Candy

You need to register 90 different Pokémon from the Hoenn region to get the Gold Hoenn Medal.

Masterwork Research ‘Wish Granted’ rewards: Is it worth buying?

Whether or not this research is “worth” buying is almost entirely dependent on how much you value Shiny Jirachi. This will likely be the only way to obtain Shiny Jirachi in this game, but the other rewards are obtainable through other means.

Tips on how to complete the Masterwork Research: Wish Granted in Pokémon Go

Here are some tips which will help you complete Masterwork Research: Wish Granted:

• Since you’re going to be catching a lot of Pokémon for the Step 1 of Wish Granted, make sure you use your Daily Adventure Incense , Lure Modules and Incense to find a wide range of Pokémon from the first three generations.
• If you’re having trouble getting the gold Hoenn medal, try trading with other players for the Gen 3 Pokémon you’re missing and using Remote Raid Passes to grab the legendaries you might be missing when they appear in raids.

Masterwork Research: Wish Granted is the third Masterwork Research quest to be released in Pokémon Go and offers you the chance to catch a shiny Jirachi.

Like the previous Masterwork Research quests - All-in-One #151 and Apex - it is a pay-to-play quest. Unlike these quests, however, you only need to purchase a ticket for the quest itself and not for a Go Tour event, which, in 2023, is free for all players.

Tickets for Masterwork Research: Wish Granted cost £4.99, $4.99 or the equivalent price for your local region. These tickets are nonrefundable and can not be purchased using PokéCoin.

Tickets will also be on sale until Monday 20th March at the following times:

• UK - 5pm (GMT)
• Europe - 6pm (CET)
• East Coast US - 1pm (EDT)
• West Coast US - 10am (PST)

Once you’ve purchased a ticket, you’ll be granted access to the Masterwork Research quest and will be able to complete it at your own pace since it has no deadline.

It’s important to note that players who attended the Go Tour: Hoenn Las Vegas event will have a different experience completing this research quest. This is because they will have to complete fewer quest steps to encounter shiny Jirachi compared to other players.

Finally, while Masterwork Research quests are designed to take a good amount of time to finish, progressing through one works exactly the same as a traditional special research quest. This means you will still have to complete a set of challenges to earn the quest step’s reward on repeat until you’ve finished the quest itself.

There is no question that Pokemon GO Tour Johto has a lot to do, but it all eventually comes down to the Masterwork Research once again and with that comes some difficult tasks and great rewards as a result of finishing them.

As was announced a few weeks before the event, Pokemon GO Tour Johto is introducing new forms for both Ho-Oh and Lugia known as Apex Shadow versions.

These Apex Shadow Ho-Oh and Lugia will be available in the game for those that complete the second year version of the Masterwork Research, so you better get ready to get to work.

How To Unlock Masterwork Research

The second iteration of Masterwork Research is not going to be a breeze to unlock or complete, which is no big surprise after how last year's was.

As far as unlocking the GO Tour Johto Masterwork Research, step one is to buy the required Pokemon GO Tour Johto ticket in the first place for the event on Saturday, February 26, that runs from 9:00 am local time to 9:00 pm local time.

Having this ticket will give you access to a set of Special Research that should be completed during the event, but also can be held onto and completed anytime after.

Once you finally make it through the nine steps that make up that Special Research, you will unlock access to the special GO Tour Johto Masterwork Research so that you can get started on completing it.

GO Tour Johto Masterwork Research Tasks and Rewards

The GO Tour Johto Masterwork Research is no doubt going to be a another time consuming one like last year's, though it's only made up of four steps.

It's impossible to find out what all four steps are at this point either, as Niantic made sure to make it to where people will have to keep playing for awhile to complete this one.

As it is impossible to brute force yourself through the "Earn a heart with your buddy for 30 days in a row" task in less than 30 days, it's going to be 30 days before anyone has access to Step 3 of the GO Tour Johto Masterwork Research.

Making sure not to forget to earn a heart with your buddy for 30 straight days is likely going to be very difficult for a lot of players, as one day can easily end that streak.

Make sure to stay tuned to find out what at least Step 3 and maybe 4 are as soon as we find out in 30 days from the writing of this guide's time.

Major:  Biology and Education Class Year:  2023 Organization:  Alliance for a Sustainable Amazon in Peru Description: As a research intern at Alliance for a Sustainable Amazon in Peru, I worked on wildlife monitoring projects, reforestation projects, and an independent research project on amphibian conservation.

Lake Barrett ’23 wanted to find a summer internship that would allow him to make a difference in the field of conservation and combine the skills he learned as a biology and education major. He was excited to find an  APEX fellowship  with Alliance for a Sustainable Amazon, a Peru-based organization that works to conserve biodiversity and natural resources in the Amazon River Basin. During his APEX fellowship, Barrett worked on wildlife monitoring projects, reforestation projects, and an independent research project on amphibian conservation. The native of Columbia, South Carolina said that this internship provided him with opportunities to grow his knowledge not only of the ecology of the Amazon, but also encouraged him to continue raising awareness about issues of deforestation and climate change in his future work.  

“I have picked up valuable knowledge about the ecology of lowland Amazon forests that I can use in the future as a biologist and as an educator. This internship has opened the door for me to work in areas of the globe that I previously didn’t consider possible.” —Lake Barrett ’23 

What interests you most about the work you did? 

“I was searching for ways to work and make a difference in the Amazon. When I found Alliance for a Sustainable Amazon, I found that opportunity. What interested me most was the opportunity to study biology and conservation in the Amazon, which is widely regarded as the world center of biodiversity. Some of my daily activities included reforestation, assisting with lepidoptera (the order of insects that includes butterflies and moths) research, monitoring aguaje palm and Brazil nut phenology, and conducting research into my own interests.” 

Who was your fellowship mentor and how did they help you to succeed in this position? 

“Hilary Edgington, visiting assistant professor of biology, was my fellowship mentor, and she was able to offer valuable feedback to me as a fellow biologist. She understood the things I was doing in my APEX fellowship and could relate them to experiences of her own.” 

How has the internship helped you to see what’s next for you?  

“I have picked up valuable knowledge about the ecology of lowland Amazon forests that I can use in the future as a biologist and as an educator. This internship has opened the door for me to work in areas of the globe that I previously didn’t consider possible. I would like to be able to spend more time studying in this ecosystem in the future and continue to raise awareness about the challenges it faces so that students I teach in the future are not learning about an ecosystem that no longer exists.”
