A Street Quarrel Essay in English ( 250 to 300 words )

Nowadays, people are in the habit of quarreling over trifles. This is what happened in my street last Sunday.

It is a holiday, all the children of our street were at their homes. The day being hot, the parents had not ta out-of-doors.

The children being children, could not be confined to the boundaries of their homes. Even in such hot weather, they preferred the naturally hot, stuffy atmosphere outside to ACs, desert coolers, and fans in n the closed rooms.

A good number of children were playing in the street. And what were they playing? Of course, cricket and that with a hard, heavy rubber ball.

It so happens that while playing the ball fell on the bare head of a small boy, Rahul. He became unconscious and now all the trouble started.

The team companions of Rahul rushed to his parents. The father showed some patience, but the mother of the boy began to cry loudly and call names to Sahil (whose ball had hit Rahul) and his parents.

The parents of Sahil who lived a few doors away also came out. Then the younger ones and supporters of the two families started using physical force against each other. They hit each other, pulled each other’s hair and some of them somersaulted in the street as if they had been showing some acrobatic tricks. Indeed, it was a free for all and had it been a show in a film instead of its being a real happening, it would have been worth watching for all lovers of fun and adventure.

The denouement came when the police suddenly arrived and saw the melodramatic performances of the crazy people in a crazy locality and perhaps in a crazy town with their own eyes.

The tragedy of this all was that nobody really cared for the unconscious boy, not even his parents. He was taken to hospital by the police and his life was saved. The police reprimanded the members of the two families and advised them better to participate in some T.V. serial than show such macabre feats in the streets.

A Street Quarrel

A street quarrel is a common sight in India. It takes place over a trifle and turns violent. Sometimes it results in loss of life and property. It creates an atmosphere of panic and tension. The people are divided into groups. It becomes a law and order problem. The police had come to settle the things.

One day some boys were playing with a ball in the street. A boy named Rajan hit the ball hard. It struck Mr. Sudesh on the face. Mr. Sudesh’s spectacles were broken. His face started bleeding. When he fell down, all the boys ran home. Mr. Sudesh’s family came to the spot. They were armed with swords and sticks.

All rushed towards Rajan’s home. They challenged Rajan to come out. Meanwhile Rajan’s father appeared there. He did not know what nad happened. As soon as he came there, he was attacked by Mr. Sudesh’s sons. The family of Rajan also came out with sharp weapons. There was a man to man fight. One or two of them were seriously wounded.

Nobody dared to come forward to stop the fight. Somebody rang up the police. The police van reached the spot in time and arrested two members of each family. The arrested persons were taken to the police station. Those who were wounded were taken to the hospital. The case against both families was registered. Both the parties had to rush here and there for help. Ultimately they realized their mistake.

They felt sorry for what they had done and the quarrel ended with a compromise.

One sunny day, I saw two boys arguing on the street. They were shouting loudly, their faces red. Some people stopped to watch, while others walked away quickly. The boys were fighting over a toy car. A kind lady nearby stepped in. She asked them to stop shouting and share the toy. The boys listened to her. They stopped fighting and started to play together nicely. The street became quiet again. Everyone was happy. This shows us that sharing is better than fighting. It keeps peace and makes everyone happy. So, we should always try to share and not fight.

One sunny afternoon, I witnessed a street quarrel that left a lasting impression on me. It was a bustling market area, filled with the usual hustle and bustle. Amidst the crowd, two fruit vendors started arguing over a trivial matter. It started with a minor disagreement about the placement of their carts. The argument escalated quickly, attracting the attention of passersby. Their voices grew louder, and their faces redder as they shouted at each other, each blaming the other for the chaos. The street, usually filled with cheerful chatter, was now filled with angry voices and curious onlookers. A few tried to intervene, attempting to calm the angry vendors, but their attempts were in vain. The quarrel continued, disrupting the peaceful atmosphere of the market. Soon, a local policeman arrived at the scene. He listened to both sides, sternly reprimanded them for their behavior, and advised them to resolve their issues peacefully. The vendors, realizing their mistake, apologized to each other and the crowd dispersed. The market soon returned to its usual lively self. This incident taught me the importance of resolving disagreements in a calm and composed manner. It showed me how a small issue can disrupt peace if not handled properly. It was a simple yet powerful lesson about the power of words and the impact of our actions on others.

Since we were missing each other, we decided to patch up. Therefore, we confronted each other and resolved our differences amicably. We shook hands and hugged each other and promised to renew our friendship in a fresh manner.

Generally, brothers and sisters quarrel with each other. It is a very common situation. Many times they quarrel with each other without any reason. Their quarrels begin over very small, petty issues and how with a small kind act the quarrels end. It is very mystic and beautiful. So let’s read this poem to feel the same.   Top    

The Quarrel Poem Summary

The poet is trying to explain how a quarrel between two siblings began and ended without any reason. The poet says that she quarrelled with her brother over something and she was not even aware what she was quarelling about. One thing was giving way to another and while fighting both of them fell down. Initially, it was a small, petty issue but gradually, it became serious. The poet was claiming to be right whereas at heart she knew that she was wrong. Both of them didn’t like one another. In the afternoon, something went wrong. Then, suddenly, her brother hit her on the back and asked her to come along as it was not possible or right to linger the issues throughout the night. He also claimed to be on the wrong side. कवि यह समझाने की कोशिश कर रही है कि कैसे दो भाई-बहनों के बीच झगड़ा शुरू हुआ और बिना किसी कारण के खत्म हो गया। कवि कहता है कि उसका अपने भाई से किसी बात पर झगड़ा हुआ और उसे पता भी नहीं था कि वह किस बात पर झगड़ा कर रही है। एक बात दूसरी बात पर हावी हो रही थी और लड़ते-लड़ते दोनों गिर पड़े। शुरू में यह एक छोटी सी बात थी लेकिन धीरे-धीरे यह गंभीर हो गई। कवि सही होने का दावा कर रहा था जबकि दिल से वह जानता था कि वह गलत है। दोनों एक-दूसरे को पसंद नहीं करते थे। दोपहर में कुछ गलत हुआ। फिर अचानक उसके भाई ने उसकी पीठ पर मारा और उसे साथ चलने के लिए कहा क्योंकि रात भर मुद्दों को लटकाए रखना संभव या सही नहीं था। उसने यह भी दावा किया कि वह गलत पक्ष में है। तो वह वास्तव में सही था। यह उसकी उदारता को दर्शाता है।   Top    

The Quarrel Poem Explanation

Poem: I quarrelled with my brother I don’t know what about, One thing led to another And somehow we fell out. The start of it was slight, The end of it was strong, He said he was right, I knew he was wrong!

Word meaning Slight: small, modest Quarrelled: fought (2nd form of verb for fight)

Explanation of the above poem : The poet had a fight with her brother. Both of them were fighting and were not even aware of the cause of the fight. The fight was happening because of a series of things. One thing was giving way to another. While fighting both fell down. In the beginning, the fight was modest and was not very serious. But gradually, it grew intense and became a serious issue. Her brother said that he was right whereas the narrator was thinking of herself to be on the right side.

Poem: We hated one another. The afternoon turned black. Then suddenly my brother Thumped me on the back, And said, “Oh, come along! We can’t go on all night — I was in the wrong.” So he was in the right.

Word meaning Thumped: hit turned black : to become unpleasant

Explanation of the above poem : In the noon the fight became serious and both started hating each other. They didn’t like one another. All of a sudden poet’s brother hit her on the back and asked her to get along as it was not the right thing to pull the matter throughout the night. He also declared humbly that he was wrong which proved his generosity. This moved the poet’s heart and he realized that he was wrong.

Introduction

The poet says that she knew that her brother was at wrong. Throughout the day they did not talk to each other and it was a bad time for the poet. But eventually, her brother came to her and told her that they cannot remain so. He accepts his mistake. The poet forgives him and the fight is finally settled.

That day, after the fight, they started hating each other. The whole afternoon they did not talk and hence it went bad for them. But suddenly, her brother patted on her back and said that they can’t remain so throughout the night. And that he wants to settle the matter.

A little boy of ten was going down the street on a bicycle. He banged into a woman. The woman fell down. She was not hurt at all. Perhaps she suffered only from a slight shock.

A crowd of people collected. Many of them were the friends and relatives of the woman who had been thrown down. They shouted at the small boy. Some of them began to beat him severely. The boy begged to be let off. Some of the bystanders tried to plead on his behalf. But it was of no use. The woman’s friends kept on raining blows on the poor boy. The boy cried out in pain.

Finding that the crowd was uncontrollable, someone went and phoned the police. The people who were causing trouble were arrested and taken away by the police. The street was quiet and peaceful once more.

Such quarrels can easily be avoided. People must learn to control their tempers. They must not make a nuisance of themselves and cause inconvenience to others.

We read or hear about quarrels every day. They are a common feature of every village and city. Quarrels start over a very small matter but sometimes they take serious turn and change to big fights.

Yesterday I was doing my homework when I heard a noise in the street. I went out of my house and found two of my neighbours quarrelling with each other. A large crowd had gathered and all were listening to their arguments. In fact, they were enjoying the quarrel. No one tried to intervene.

The reason for the quarrel was very small. The cricket ball of one of the neighbour’s son had come inside the boundary of the other neighbour and had damaged his vase. In fact, it was a very silly reason to quartel.

The two were not having good relations and therefore they started quarrelling. One of them started calling names. Soon both of them started exchanging hot words. From hot words, they came to blows. One of them gave a blow to the other who also did the same. Some one rang the police post. Two police constables reached the spot immediately and pacified the quarrelling persons. The matter was resolved when the neighbour whose son had damaged the vase, agreed to replace the damaged vase with the new one.

Street quarrels are very common features of city life. They occur sometimes due to bad temper and sometimes due to greedy nature of some wicked man. Whatever may be the cause behind street quarrels, one thing is clear that most of the time people join the fight for mere joy showing off their fighting spirit and thus create an unwanted scene polluting the whole atmosphere of their surrounding.

A few days back a quarrel took an ugly turn when the persons involved in it forgot all civic sense. There is generally a great rush of traffic in the school street at 1:30 pm because it is the time when the school is over for the day.

The street is not so wide. One man with a heavy load had obstructed the narrow passage. Soon a man on a scooter and an auto rickshaw driver tried to surpass but none of them was ready to allow the other to pass. The situation was becoming serious by and by with the hot exchange of words. Both the scooters and the autorickshaw driver started abusing each other. Soon a big crowd was gathered there.

Some favoured the man on the scooter and some took the side of the auto rickshaw driver. But one thing I noticed that most of them did not seem interested in settling down the quarrel.

They sometimes were provoking the scooterist and sometimes the auto-rickshaw driver. As a result the quarrel took an ugly turn. The shouting and abuses were followed by boxing and blows. One caught the collar of the other and finally they were seen rolling and tearing and scratching each other. They were mad people with no head at all.

Some young men who heroically came forward to settle down the quarrel themselves started showing their fighting skill. And within a few minutes the quarrel became a group quarrel. Big sticks were being brought and used by many fighters.

As a result some of them were badly hurt. Some were seen bleeding. The crowd got panicky and there occurred stampede taking many lives. The police came late and therefore they did not prove themselves helpful in averting the situation.

It has been rightly said that anger is a momentary madness, and we must keep it in control. Mahatma Gandhi has rightly said, “One who can tolerate an evil done is really a hero of the heroes, only weak people desort to violence.” Hence, we must develop the power of tolerance and mutual understanding. Anger begets anger and violence leads to more violence.

Therefore it is wise not creating such a situation. We must remember that peace is always good and the limit must not be crossed at any cost. Our formula of life should be live and let live.

Set 4: Essay On A Street Quarrel

Street quarrels are quite common in India. They are a thing of daily occurrence. Last Monday, I witnessed one such street quarrel. I was returning from school. I saw a large crowd of people in front of a shop. They were abusing and grappling with one another. Their shouting could be heard from a distance. I at once saw that a quarrel was on.

I hastened to the spot of the quarrel. I saw that five or six men were giving blows to one another. Brickbats were being thrown. One of them had an injury that was bleeding. He was thrown headlong. It looked as if all of them had gone mad.

I could not bear all that. I made my way through the crowd, tried to intervene and pacify them. Two of them were in grips and the third was showering blows. I tried to disengage them. They gave me an angry look. One of them abused me and said, “Go your way. You are no body to meddle with us. Let us settle our scores. I requested them to be calm and composed, but who would listen to the voice of reason.

Everyone was excited. The man who was bleeding came forward with a sharp knife. I realised the seriousness of the situation and stepped in between. People tried to separate and pacify them but all to no purpose. Two policemen happened to arrive on the scene. They dispersed the crowd and put under arrest some member of both the parties. They were handcuffed and taken to the police station.

It is said that the quarrel was over a trifle. A man hired a taxi and used it for an hour an five minutes. The driver demanded the hire for two hours while the user was paying the hire of one hour. It led to the quarrel. A few sympathisers also jumped into the quarrel. I learnt later that both the parties gave their statements. The police investigated the matter. Some members of both the parties were challaned. Both the parties engaged pleaders. The quarrel cost them dearly.

Introduction:

Street quarrels are a very common scenario in cities. They sometimes occur because of bad temper and sometimes because of the greedy nature of people.

No matter what may be the reason behind street quarrels, one thing is apparent that majority of the time people join the fight for mere enjoyment flaunting their fighting spirit.

This leads to the creation of an unwanted sight which is a blot on the face of that area.

The Quarrel I Witnessed:

A couple of days back a quarrel took a hideous turn when the people involved in it forgot all their civic senses. There is generally a great traffic rush on the street adjacent to our school at 1:30 pm since it is the time when the school gets over for the day. The street is a very narrow one. One guy with a heavy cargo had blocked the narrow passage.

In a small span of time, a man on a scooter and a driver in an auto rickshaw made efforts to surpass but none of them was prepared to allow the other to go by. The situation was becoming grave by and by following a hot exchange of words. Both the auto-rickshaw driver and the scooter started hurling abuses at each other. Soon a large crowd was gathered there.

Some of the people in the crowd supported the man on the scooter and some of them took the side of the auto rickshaw driver. But the thing to be noticed was that none of them seem interested in putting an end to the quarrel. Most of them were provoking the auto-rickshaw driver and some of them were doing so to the scooterist. As a consequence the quarrel took a dreadful turn.

The outcry and abuses were followed by blows, punches and kicks. One person caught hold of the collar of the other and pinned him down. They both were finally seen tearing, rolling and scratching each other. Both of them seemed to have all their senses in anger.

Futile Efforts to Stop the Fight:

Some adolescent men who bravely came forward to resolve down the quarrel themselves started displaying their fighting skills. And in a matter of minutes, the quarrel became a group quarrel. Large sticks were being brought and used by the people engaged in the fight. It was like a mini war in the middle of the road. As a consequence some of them were seriously hurt.

Some of the people were seen bleeding. The mob got jumpy and everyone started running from here to there causing a stampede of sorts. The police arrived late and hence they did not prove themselves useful in forestalling the situation.

Conclusion:

It has been accurately said that anger is momentary madness, and each of us must keep it in control. Everyone must build up the power of tolerance, peace and mutual understanding. Anger begets anger and violence leads to more violence. Thus, it is never wise to create or be a part of such a situation. We must keep in mind that peace is always good and the limits of morality and civic sense must not be forgotten.

Essay No. 01

Street quarrels are a very common scene in India. Their causes are simple but the results are serious. Sometimes peoples quarrel over trifles. These quarrels take a turn for the worse and men are involved in it.

A few days back a quarrel arose between two children. Nitin and Depam were flying kites on the roof of their houses. Their kites got in tangled and Nitin’s kite was cut off from the string. Depam started quarreling and says bad names to him. From hot words, they came to blows. Depam beat Nitin and his head began to bleed. Someone informed Nitin’s father. He lost his temper. He came running. He at once slapped Depam. Soon Depam’s father came to know and he came red with anger. He abused Nitin’s father and hit him. Now the quarrel looks like serious injuries.

A large number of people gathered on the spot. But no one tried to separate them. At last, someone informed the police. Two constables came. They separated them and asked them to proceed to the police station. Soon, an older man of the street assembled there. They also went to the police station and the quarrel was amicably settled.

A Street Quarrel

Man and quarreling are as if inseparable. We find men and women quarreling everywhere at home, in offices, in society, in Government, and so much so that, quarrels sometimes even come out on the streets.

Once I had the merry occasion of witnessing a quarrel a street. I had just come out of my house, and, as I turned towards the market there I saw a huge crowd in the middle of the road that led to the market. Wondering what could have happened, I also just joined the bandwagon of excited people, and, forgetting my work, I stood there with the rest of the crowd.

I stood there for quite some ten minutes but just could not understand what had actually happened. After frittering away some time, I finally asked the people there, as to what had happened. The story that followed my query was absolutely shocking and I was all out of my wits hearing all that trash. I just wondered at the pettiness of the human mind that could make such a loud rumpus about a thing that I considered nothing worthy of even talking about.

The story that emerged was that one neighbor had hit with a stick the dog of another neighbor. It had so happened that, one of Mr. Srivastava’s dog was playing with a ball on the lane that lay between the row of flats. Just as the dog was busy hitting the ball while holding it in its paws, Mr. Bali’s son brought his car and drove just brushing close to the little puppy of Mr. Srivastava. Even though the pet had not been touched, leave aside being hurt, the very fact that the neighbor’s car drove from close to the puppy was enough for the two neighbors to come out to the street to settle scores. The quarrel started with the pet puppy who was not even hurt, but, continued to bring in its trail, members of both families. Both the men first started abusing members of each other’s family and, as public, in general, enjoys it all, as time passed by, people started pouring out of their houses, of their flats and shops, and one after another, thus adding unnecessarily to the commotion caused for nothing. After the men forming a line of battle, women followed suit and several came out to see what was happening and to add to the crowd and noise.

When I reached the spot the scene that was in front of me just shocked me all out of my wits. I came to know the occasion for the broil and, lo and behold when I just reached there, the two main contestants, the two neighbors who had just started with an argument had now come to blows and a volley of abuses. The crowd was also very neatly divided between the two sides, one faction siding each of the fighters. There were abuses, blows and shouting, and screeching all the while, coming from both sides, one being louder than the other. Emotions ran high and as I stood there, people started tearing at each other’s hair, and I just could not believe how, such a small incident could enrage people to such an extent that, they lost all sense of proportion and showed off their ill behavior on the road. To me, this depicted man’s capacity of making mountains out of molehills. A small altercation that could have, and actually should have ended with an argument maybe for a few minutes without anyone even knowing about it all, became a loud and ugly rumpus as though a magnum problem had arisen.

This incident, a quarrel on the street brought about to a halt all the traffic, and so many people came to know about the differences between the two neighbors. This incident on the road brings to my mind quite a few ugly habits of us human beings. First and foremost, I just could not understand why an altercation at all, more so when the dog was not even hurt at all, where was the need even for a heated argument? This in turn shows how so very intolerant we have become in today’s world. Besides this, another ugly facet of human character this incident depicted was that we all yes add to any trouble we find around us. Instead of helping to cool the matters ahead, we are inclined to add to fury maybe even to settle our scores with people. We have lost all patience, tolerance, and semblance of good behavior. How we can bring small quarrels on the road and wash our dirty linen in front of all, is just beyond my understanding. This shows that we are just not even the least bothered about What people may think of us if we misbehave.

This little street quarrel made me wiser than before and, I started understanding the low depths that human behavior and human relationships have gone to. It was an eye-opener and I, for one, promised myself never to behave so vulgar, like a street urchin.

Essay No. 03

Quarrels often arise out of trifles. They are found everywhere where people live. But soon after a quarrel is over the parties involved in it forget all about it. Only sometimes a few quarrels grow into lifelong animosity or enmity.

Last week a quarrel took place in our street. Two boys were playing cricket. Another boy was passing by. Suddenly the cricket ball hit him. It was only a matter of chance. Chotte Lal picked up the ball and ran away with it. The two boys chased him and overtook him. They tried to snatch their ball from Chotte Lal. He refused to part with it. In the scuffle, he fell into a muddy drain. All his clothes got wet and spoiled. He lost his temper and started rebuking Munna and Nanhe. From hot words, they started exchanging blows. Chotte Lal was overpowered by Munna and Nanhe. He started crying loudly. Munna and Nanhe ran away. Chotte went to his house and complains about the two boys.

Chotte’s mother got excited. She went to Munna’s house and complained against him. There she saw Nanhe hiding behind the door. She began abusing and cursing the boys for beating her young son.

Munna’s mother did not keep quiet. She too paid her back in the same coin. They too began to exchange blows.

On hearing the noise some neighbours too arrived at the scene of the quarrel. They too stood there silently enjoying the quarrel. They were afraid of being dragged into the quarrel. But an old lady did intervene. She separated the two quarreling ladies. At this another woman took Munna’s mother aside. Chotte Lal’s mother still went on shouting for some time. After some time she began panting and stood still. She was given a glass of water to drink. Munna’s mother went in and closed her door with a bang. In this way the quarrel came to an end.

The next day the two ladies were chatting in the street. Not only this the boys too were friends once again. Chotte Lal was seen playing cricket with Munna, Nanhe, and some other boys in the neighbourhood. They had forgotten all about the earlier quarrel.

Southport latest: Eight arrested and officers injured in Sunderland riot - as police brace for more violence

Eight people have been arrested and three police officers taken to hospital following rioting in Sunderland city centre. It comes after rioters fought with police following a planned protest linked to the Southport stabbings.

Dozens more protests have been planned for this weekend in the wake of the Southport stabbings.

Campaign group Hope Not Hate has identified more than 30 protests planned across the UK over the next two days.

On Wednesday evening, more than 100 protesters were arrested on Whitehall, where bottles and cans were thrown at police, and violence broke out in Hartlepool, County Durham, and in Manchester outside the Holiday Inn on Oldham Road.

On Thursday, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer announced a new "national" response to the disorder linking police forces across the country.

And yesterday evening rioters battled police in the streets of Sunderland city centre following a planned protest linked to the Southport knife attack.

Northumbria Police have said in a post on X that its officers had been "subjected to serious violence", and added that three officers were taken to hospital.

Eight people have so far been arrested for a range of offences, including violent disorder and burglary, the force added.

A link can be drawn between the disorder in Sunderland and the English Defence League (EDL) which was founded Tommy Robinson, real name Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, the local MP has said.

Asked how last night had happened, Labour MP for Sunderland Central Lewis Atkinson said protests started being suggested by people in a number of social media groups in the wake of the Southport stabbings.

"The far-right, for example Stephen Yaxley-Lennon, picked up on those and started promoting those and encouraging known far right individuals to join," Mr Atkinson told BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

Asked whether a link could be drawn with the EDL, he said: "I can draw a link because last night one of the flags on the street bore the reference to the North East Infidels, which is a Nazi, EDL offshoot from the northeast chapter of what was the EDL."

Individuals who were involved with the EDL are "still out there" and need to be monitored by police, he said.

Earlier, Mr Atkinson said he was "appalled" by the disorder in the city centre.

He wrote on the X social media platform: "Our city is not represented by a tiny minority causing trouble."

 Sunderland AFC has condemned what it said are "shameful scenes" in the city after police officers were attacked with stones, beer bottles and fire extinguishers. 

Sunderland Central Police Office was also set alight in the disorder. 

The club said on X: "Our great city is built on togetherness and acceptance... we are stronger as one community."

Eight people have been arrested for a range of offences, including violent disorder and burglary, after riots broke out in Sunderland.

Northumbria Police said three police officers were taken to hospital after being injured.

Two remain in hospital for further treatment, and one has since been discharged. 

In a statement, Chief Superintendent Helena Barron said the "disorder, violence and damage which has occurred will not be tolerated", adding that officers showed "unwavering commitment" when faced with "serious and sustained levels of violence". 

She said a full investigation is under way to identify anyone else involved in tonight's protest, and warned anyone planning to involve themselves in any future disorder to stay at home.  

Education secretary and Sunderland MP Bridget Phillipson described unrest in the city as "unforgiveable violence and thuggery".

Posting on X, she said: "The criminals involved in this appalling disorder must be identified, prosecuted, and punished with the full force of the law.

"Sunderland is better than this and these thugs do not represent our city."

Number 10 and the Houses of Parliament have been lit up in pink in memory of the three girls killed in Southport on Monday.

Landmarks across the country have also been illuminated, including St George's Hall and the Cunard Building in Liverpool, the Mersey Gateway Bridge and Chester Town Hall.

Hospitals in the northwest, including Southport Hospital and Ormskirk Hospital, are also lit up.

Several businesses, such as Liverpool John Lennon Airport and Merseyrail, have updated their profile pictures on social media platform, X, to pink-coloured logos, while traders at Southport market wore pink wristbands.

Footage confirms earlier reports that Sunderland Central Police Office has been set alight.

It follows an overturned car being set on fire earlier this evening, as rioters marched through the city centre attacking police.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service are in attendance.

Officers were subjected to "serious violence", Northumbria Police said, including being attacked with stones and fire extinguishers.

Criminals rioting in Sunderland will pay, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper says.

She said the police had the government's backing to take the strongest possible action.

"Criminals attacking the police and stoking disorder on our streets will pay the price for their violence and thuggery. 

"The police have the full backing of government to take the strongest possible action and ensure they face the full force of the law. 

"They do not represent Britain."
