What Is a Learning Journey?

A learning journey is a dynamic and continuous process focused on acquiring and refining skills for long-term growth and professional advancement. Unlike traditional training, it entails a sequence of interconnected learning experiences, blending formal training with self-initiated informal learning opportunities. This approach integrates new skills seamlessly into daily work practices, fostering enhanced employee performance within skill-centric organizational frameworks.

This approach, bolstered by AI, personalizes learning experiences, tailoring them to individual needs and fostering continuous growth and improved performance within skill-centric organizational frameworks.

A well-defined learning journey must entail the following characteristics:

Here are 3 case studies that provide further insight into how we have leveraged EI’s L&P ecosystem:

Case Study #1: Microlearning-based Learning Journey

The Background 

A global conglomerate observed that despite conducting their performance review cycles promptly, the performance conversations were still unstructured, resulting in insufficient documentation. They required a new learning program that would cover the different facets of performance conversations, including how to conduct them.

Our Solution

Our solution comprised a 3-month learning program strategically releasing various microlearning assets, including 5–10-minute interactive modules, 2–4-minute video nuggets, simulated videos, game-based conversation simulations, and scenario-based assessments.

A key highlight of the solution was the highly immersive video-based conversation simulation with Gamification features. It focused on building engagement and helping employees and managers practice the organization’s way of conducting performance conversations.

Within the first two weeks of launch, we observed over 1700 course completions. According to the detailed feedback forms used to measure critical KPIs like Business Impact, Content Quality, Job Impact, Learning Relevance, etc., the overall score was an exceptional 8.58/10.00.

The Background

A leading soft skills training company aimed to develop a personalized app to help learners understand their strengths and weaknesses, thereby enabling greater success both professionally and personally.

After completing an initial survey, learners were provided with a personalized, gamified learning pathway comprising microlearning nuggets such as engaging videos, interactive content, downloadable aids, exercises, and quizzes. How to create a learning journey.

Many job seekers want to work for companies that not only pay well and have a great benefits package but also have an awesome learning and development (L&D) program. These employees are searching for organizations that value learning and encourage professional development. Prospective team members want a chance to develop and enhance their skills while at the same time learn new technologies or further their education. Companies that are able to offer the complete package, especially the “value of learning and professional development,” are able to land the best candidates.

So, how do organizations make this happen? How do they develop something that will assist employees who want to improve their performance not only in the workplace but also in their careers? One way an organization can do this is to establish effective learning journeys.

What is a Learning Journey?

A learning journey is a series of formal and informal training programs that ingrain new knowledge, build existing skills and boost professional development. Learning journeys include different learning experiences that occur over time. They involve personalized content and a variety of delivery methods that result in new knowledge, skills, attitudes and a positive behavioral change. Employees might go through a learning journey to master their skill set, learn a new job role or to further their education. Team members who are truly engaged in the learning journey will not only build their skills but will also find purpose in the work they do.

Learning journeys are beneficial to organizations because they encourage employee engagement and professional development, while creating a culture of learning . Having an effective learning journey will facilitate behavior changes that coincide with the business goals of the organization. This will ensure the performance and productivity of the organization.

Formal and Informal Learning

A learning journey can consist of formal and informal learning. Let’s take a look at both and how each one impacts the learning journey.

Informal Learning

Informal learning is different from formal learning because it usually takes place away from formal settings such as the classroom or lecture halls.  Informal learning is valuable to both the individual and the organization because it improves collaboration, drives creativity and contributes to a strong learning culture.

Formal Learning

Formal learning is often mandatory training that is set by the organization to comply with policies and procedures. This is the form of training employees receive during onboarding or on an annual basis. An example of this training includes diversity and culture training, timekeeping, harassment and government relations.

Developing the Learning Journey

It is essential to develop a training program that meets the meets the needs of the team and the organization. Here are some best practices to consider when creating a learning journey:

Assess Knowledge : Before creating a learning journey, leaders, managers and direct line supervisors need to sit down and assess the organization’s knowledge base and learning skills. This will create a baseline against which progress can be measured.

Identify Training/Skills Gaps : Another important step is to identify and discuss the training gaps, especially in the skill sets that are critical to the organization’s production and growth. It is essential that leadership evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of each employee relative to their and the organization’s goals and priorities.

Design Training With Goals in Mind : A learning journey should be created with the end in mind. What are the goals? How does it benefit the individual? The organization? What are the results the organization, the stakeholders and the team members want to achieve? These questions should be considered before a training program or learning journey is created.

Create a Continuous Learning Experience : A learning journey is a continuous process, not a one-time event, such as a webinar or a learning module. All aspects of the learning journey should be discussed in the planning and development process to ensure alignment between leadership and the training team. A successful learning journey depends on employee engagement and should be considered at every stage of the journey.

Evaluating the Journey

Successful learning programs are measured by employee engagement. This is why it is vital to engage with the team before, during and after the learning events. Employees going through the learning journey need to know how leaders and managers are supporting the learning process to include coaching, mentoring, empathizing and ensuring that the training is available.

Are the individual training needs being met within the organization or are resources needed from the outside? What is the career path ahead for the employee who takes part in the learning journey? What is the motivation? There are individuals who are self-motivated and want to learn a new skill or gain knowledge. However, there are others who need additional motivation; for example, a system of rewarding progress that encourages individuals to start and continue throughout the process.

Setting up Milestones

As the journey progresses, leaders and managers need to establish milestones for the team to ensure that each individual is completing their training on a timely basis. Also, it is beneficial to have a way to provide positive reminders to the team to continue with their learning journey. Leaders should also take time to meet with their employees on a regular basis to discuss the progress and to have a place for the individual to apply their new knowledge and skill and offer additional informal training to enhance their new craft.

Meeting with the team will ensure that they fully understand what they are learning, and that they’re exhibiting changes in their behavior. Employees should be given the opportunity to share what they learn by giving a presentation, participate in small group sessions or meet with supervisors so they can show their new skills. Other ways include coaching, mentorship, projects, protocols, peer learning, networking groups or simulations.

A successful learning journey is beneficial for both the employee and the organization and empowers them to meet the challenges of the rapid changes that are taking place. There are additional benefits, including building trust and creating new ways of collaboration amongst the members of the team, increasing productivity and performance, delivering lasting results and increasing retention. Leaders play a big role in the learning journey success by coaching, mentorship, having team members take part in projects, encouraging peer learning, establishing networking groups, having simulations or inviting outside speakers.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Sunisa Lee, the all-around gold medalist in women’s gymnastics at the Tokyo Olympics, woke up one morning last year and was startled by her reflection in the mirror.

Her face looked as if it had been inflated with an air pump. Her leg joints were so swollen that she could hardly bend her knees or ankles. A scale revealed she had gained more than 10 pounds.

Her mind raced: Had she been eating too much? Was it the pollen in the air? Maybe she was allergic to her roommate’s new dog?

“I was like, who is this person looking back at me?” Lee, who is competing for the United States at the Paris Games, said in an interview. “It was so scary. I didn’t know it then, but the old Suni was gone. And she would never be back.”

Lee had been a surprise winner in Tokyo : Simone Biles — the overwhelming favorite for that gold medal — had withdrawn from the Games with a mental block that made her feel unsafe performing her flips and twists in the air.

Rams News: Watch Cooper Kupp Make Impressive Bobbling TD Catch in Training Camp

Los Angeles Rams wide receiver Cooper Kupp showed off his impressive hands at training camp on Thursday. During team drills, Kupp bobbles and secures a touchdown before getting out of bounds.

All eyes were on the Rams' offensive weapons at training camp. NFL Network's Peter Schrager shared his assessment of Kupp's performance thus far.

"Stafford looks incredible, and Kupp and Nacua are dialed in,” Schrager said. “Cooper Kupp, coming off a little bit of an injury, wasn’t himself last year, looks amazing. He is in the best shape he’s been in in years. And then Nacua, we’re talking about a guy who had a record-breaking rookie year. He was unbelievable at practice yesterday.”

Kupp has dealt with various injuries for the last two seasons. In 2023, he was hampered by a hamstring injury so he was unable to put up anywhere close to his usual numbers. His most notable season was in 2021 but since then he's been overshadowed by other receivers in the league.

His teammate, Puka Nacua emerged as a top receiver in the NFL which has also unintentionally pushed Kupp aside. But Kupp has embraced his leadership role with the young receiver and Nacua has even said he sees Kupp as a big brother.

"It's been really cool -- Puka's been great -- it's really cool for him to say that, and I'm obviously very much appreciate that," Kupp told Nick Shook of NFL.com . "I just can't get rid of the guy -- he shows up to my house, he jumps in, I make him throw up, he still comes back. He comes over for dinner, I've got veggies all over his plate, he still comes back. He's resilient, this one.

Kupp was the winner of the receiving Triple Crown in 2021 and led the league in receptions, yards, and touchdowns. It was the same year that the Rams won the Super Bowl and Kupp earned MVP.

“ I feel good. We got a lot of good work in this offseason,” Kupp said.“The best thing about this last year was just being able to feel healthy and have a full offseason of work, not just for myself in terms of working out and building my body back up but also having that time with Matthew, being able to get on the field and work through things together. Obviously, getting out here has been great. First few days of camp have been awesome, things have been clicking and looking forward to continue to build on that this year.”

All signs point to Kupp having a spectacular season, especially since he's had a fully healthy offseason.

Building a sustainable health research ecosystem in Ghana and across Africa

Almost 15 years ago, when the University of Ghana established its Office of Research, Innovation, and Development, it did so with the goal of bolstering the West African nation’s research capacity. 

In the African region, where less than 0.5% of GDP is devoted to research, and a significant number of Africa’s educated is siphoned off to other countries, TDR has spearheaded the effort to make universities like the University of Ghana research-intensive and competitive. 

TDR support for research capacity strengthening activities at the University of Ghana focuses on enabling researchers to tackle infectious diseases of poverty through quality implementation research, the study of bridging basic science research and practice.

Examples of this are examining why many patients on antiretroviral therapy drop out of treatment or identifying barriers to TB treatment adherence – the subjects of recent  publications  authored by researchers at the University of Ghana.

Capacity building works

“Capacity-building actually works,” remarked Professor Gordon A  , Pro Vice-Chancellor of Academic Student Affairs at the University of Ghana, at a   event in Geneva, where he gave a   before TDR’s Joint Coordinating Board on June 12. 

He cited, as one example, his own career trajectory. Awandare began a career in research through a TDR grant that allowed him to complete his masters training, and then got an opportunity to study for a PhD at the University of Pittsburgh while attending a conference on malaria with support from TDR.  He returned home to the University of Ghana in 2010, founding the   (WACCBIP) in 2014. Since then, the Centre, supported by the Wellcome Trust and the World Bank, has endowed 400 fellowships and received $53 million in grants, thereby directly reducing the “brain drain” across the African region.



A decade-long partnership

In 2014 the University of Ghana’s School of Public Health signed a partnership agreement with TDR to create a regional training center that leads activities in the African region for strengthening capacity in implementation research to tackle infectious diseases of poverty.

The initiative has so far trained more than 25,000 individuals across Africa, including health practitioners, decision-makers and researchers.                                    

“Looking at how far we’ve come as a training centre, it is our desire to become a centre of excellence,” said Professor Phyllis Dako-Gyeke, who led the TDR-supported research training programmes at University of Ghana until her  passing   on 11 June. 

But the success of an almost decade-long relationship is not without its challenges. Sustainable donor support and aligned interests on research priorities remain key, she said. 

Real-time research 

Dr Emmanuel Asampong, coordinator of the regional training centre at the University of Ghana, notes that “the impact of implementation research on disease themes in Africa and beyond is impressive because the initiative promotes the use of real-time research results in various contexts – such as neglected tropical diseases programmes, national malaria programmes, and tuberculosis control programmes – to provide solutions to challenges.” 

The global training programme, which has played a significant role in positioning University of Ghana as a research-intensive university, supports seven regional training centres across six WHO regions. With additional partners in Colombia, Indonesia, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Senegal and Tunisia, the programme develops and updates implementation research courses, provides faculty training and supports career development.

The University of Ghana also partners with TDR on a  postgraduate training scheme , which provides a full academic scholarship for master’s students. The training is specifically focused on implementation research to tackle infectious diseases of poverty. 

The list of TDR alumni across the world runs long, and the University of Ghana can claim many public health leaders among them.

How gymnast Suni Lee overcame illness to make a triumphant Olympic return

Suni Lee helped lead her team to a gold medal on Tuesday , a feat even more remarkable because it wasn’t long ago she was told she may never be able to compete in gymnastics again.

Now, the two-time Olympian is in the middle of her quest to further cement her name in gymnastics history after a win in the team competition in Paris earlier this week.

Lee grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota, in a small conservative Hmong community. Her parents, both immigrants who came from Laos during the Vietnam war, are members of the Hmong community as well.

Growing up, it was clear Lee would have a bright future in gymnastics. And by the age of 12, she had reached the highest level she could- she was named to the U.S. Junior National Team. She competed all over the world with the team, bringing home medals of every color in both team and individual events.

Not long after, she was eligible to become a senior U.S. national gymnast. And at age 18, she was named to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic team. There, she the all-around gold medal-arguably one of the most prestigious honors in all of gymnastics. She also won a silver medal with the team and a bronze on the uneven bars.

But coming off Olympic success did not turn out to be all glamour.

Lee went on to attend Auburn University, where she found collegiate gymnastics success. But in Feb. 2023, everything changed.

Lee woke up that morning feeling swelling in her feet and ankles- which she immediately attributed to her gymnastics training. But the following morning, things had progressed. Now, when she looked in the mirror, her legs, hands, face and essentially whole body were swollen too.

According to Lee, the swelling continued to the point where gained almost 40 pounds. The swelling in her body began to impact her training.

The uneven bars, once her best event, seemed nearly impossible due to the swelling in her hands causing her to lose her grip on the bars. The symptoms, including swelling, headaches, hot flashes, cold spells and cramping began to have mental affects on Lee as well.

“I couldn’t even look at myself in the mirror,” Lee told Sports Illustrated. “I was just rotting in my bed. I couldn’t talk to anybody. I didn’t leave the house.”

At first, Lee’s doctors couldn’t pinpoint the issue. Eventually, they diagnosed her with two kidney diseases, the names of which Lee has not disclosed.

According to The New York Times, Lee’s mother revealed her brother died of kidney failure at age 45 and her mother of the same thing when she slightly over 60.

Lee began a medication regimen that included going in for infusions and caused her to have to retire from college gymnastics. Even still, she made sure her goals were clear.

“I will not stop pursuing my dreams for a bid to Paris in 2024. In fact, this experience has sharpened my vision for the future,” Lee shared in a post on social media.

She took about five months off training before returning with a modified plan. The symptoms from her illness and medications caused her to alter her gymnastics slightly, so she could slowly get back into training.

Lee was able to start competing again in 2023, and in Jan. 2024, she got a phone call that changed the trajectory of her life.

Lee’s doctors had called to inform her that their plan was working- her medications and infusions were helping. She returned to training full time at her gym Midwest Gymnastics.

Her kidney diseases are now officially in remission. At the U.S. Olympic Trials in June, Lee officially qualified for the Paris Games. When she was interviewed following the announcement, she delivered an emotional response to the news.

“A year ago, I didn’t even think this was possible,” Lee said, struggling to get the words out through her tears.

Now, Lee has officially taken home one medal from Paris, winning a team gold. Her quest will continue Thursday when she will compete alongside her teammate Simone Biles in the all-around competition.

She’s also qualified for two event finals as well, and she’ll compete in the balance beam final alongside Biles on Monday.

A few years ago, her illness wouldn’t let her hold on to the bar, her best event. On Sunday, she’ll compete in the Olympic uneven bar final, as the only American woman to make the cut.

Lee’s second Olympic run has already shown her resilience and served as inspiration for those dealing with illness or injury, and she’s not done yet.
