In the UK, research scientist salaries range from £20,000 at the entry-level to over £70,000 for university professor senior research fellow roles. The average research scientist salary is £32,330. Most research assistants earn between £26,000 and £35,000.

However, the role of a researcher is much wider than the job description and the responsibilities of a researcher are numerous. In this article, we will take a brief look at the many responsibilities a researcher that must be fulfilled to play this role effectively.

Varied roles of a researcher

A good researcher needs to be many things to many people; here are some researcher duties and responsibilities:

  • Scientist – The primary role of a researcher is to conduct research, be that through experimental studies, literature reviews, or qualitative studies. This includes designing experiments and writing reports.
  • Colleague/collaborator – Researcher duties and responsibilities often include collaborations with colleagues on scientific studies as well as review others’ work and provide feedback.
  • Communicator – The role of a researcher includes communicating with various audiences about their work. Journal articles need to be written, grant applications completed, and presentations made to review boards and decision makers.
  • Steward of the public trust – Many studies are funded with public resources, which come with the need for accountability. The responsibility of a researcher is to fulfill obligations required by the funding source, such as creating reports and presentations.

Obviously, the primary role of a researcher is chasing knowledge and conducting studies. However, it is also essential that any conclusions reached through the research be evidence based. The results reported must be honest, objective, and scientifically supported. Here are some examples of ethical issues that a good researcher must consider when designing and conducting studies, reporting results, and drawing conclusions 2 :

  • Over generalizing results – all studies have limitations. It is the responsibility of a researcher to openly reveal their limitations to ensure their work is useful and can be built on.
  • Biased methodology or conclusions – this is especially important in qualitative studies. Researchers need to ask themselves if the survey questions are fair or if their own opinions are clouding the results.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Completion of a four-year degree from an accredited college or university and professional experience in strategic planning, personnel management, organizational management, budget and financial management, and legislative and administrative processes.
  • Professional experience as described above can substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required college education.

** Preference will be given to those who have an expertise in building, implementing, using, and training on data software, including but not limited to, SAP Crystal Reports, Qlik, Microsoft Power BI, and/or Tableau.

The Work You Will Do:  

The incumbent in this position reports directly to the Secretary of the Department of Business and Professional Regulation and will be responsible for all research evaluation and data integrity functions for the agency. Oversee the sound design and efficient implementation of various research projects determined to be of significant value to the Department. Includes both short- and long-term studies designed to aid in development of policy, practices, and programming. 

Directs the planning, organizing, and activities of the Division to ensure compliance with applicable statutes and regulations under the Division's jurisdiction.

Supervises the data integrity efforts for the Department. Ensure the accuracy of data entered the Department’s centralized information systems. Support planning activities conducted by program areas through data and research activities.

Assists the Office of the Secretary implement an effective system to make data-informed decisions, including setting goals for each programmatic Division; ensure a consistent, valid, and reliable system of data measurement and methodology; oversee and develop and ensure a robust and efficient data collection process; conduct statistical analysis of identified Division performance metrics, and utilize graphical displays to summarize and communicate data with efficacy.    

Ensures the Department’s data needs are addressed in a competent and timely manner. This will include, but is not limited to, both on-going needs and special projects, such as Legislative Budget Requests (LBRs) /budget support, public information requests, internal and external communications need, and data requests from the Florida Legislature. 

Leads Department data gathering, analysis, and reporting efforts. Responsible for the on-going development and management of service goal measurement and efficiency processes. 

Develops and supervise the implementation and expansion of interactive dashboard reports for pubic and internal use throughout the Department’s programmatic areas. 

Communicates with external groups, stakeholders, and organizations regarding the various industries regulated by the Division.

Identifies opportunities for continuous improvement using emerging data and trends and consult with leadership.

Is responsible for coordinating with staff to track and gather data.

Is responsible for identifying and analyzing data to be included in presentations/demonstrations appropriate for high-level audiences such as the Florida Legislature.

Conducts advanced statistical evaluations of Department programs or initiatives using a variety of methods including, but not limited to coarsened exact matching (CEM), exact matching, linear regression, logistic/binary regression, multinomial logistic regression, structured equation modeling (SEM), hierarchal linear modeling, survival analysis, time-series analysis, and other interrupted time-series designs.
