Understanding technological change entails developing a comprehensive interdisciplinary approach which is critical in designing and implementing appropriate science and technology policies. Ph.D. Program in Science and Technology Policy Studies is supported by various disciplines such as economics, administrative sciences, engineering, sociology, history, philosophy, communication and cultural studies.

Recent developments in the knowledge-intensity of economic activity and rapid technological advancement have significant socio-economic repercussions at the level of nation states, regions, industries, markets, and firms. In this context the program aims to confront the challenges by providing several concentration areas for policy making.

The mission of the Science and Technology Studies Ph.D. program is to encourage scientific research and policy making particularly in the fields of technological change and innovation processes that are indispensable elements for understanding the structural changes in the current economic and social life. Consequently, the program creates a new set of opportunities for those who are at the early stages of their careers to pursue research training in a challenging and important area of inquiry.

The graduates of Science and Technology Policy Studies PhD program;

  • can work as an academician or researcher at higher education institutions in Turkey and abroad.
  • can work as a chief expert, coordinator and director at the science, technology and innovation policy units in the related public and autonomous institutions.
  • can work as a coordinator or director in the technology management and strategy departments of private companies.

Educational outcomes

Upon completion of the PhD program our students,

  • will gain an interdisciplinary perspective to analyze and conduct research on the economic and social consequences of technological progress.
  • will gain competence to develop and implement harmonious science, technology and innovation strategies and policies.
  • will acquire conceptual and methodological knowledge to design long term science, technology and innovation policy.

According to the Higher Education Regulation (YÖK), students who graduate from a non-thesis graduate program cannot apply for a Ph.D. program.

Program Structure

The program consists of 3 required must courses and 4 elective courses. After completing the coursework the students have to take the qualifer exam in the 5th semester of the program. Upon succesfully passing the qualifer exam the student advances to write a PhD thesis. The program offers courses on a wide range of areas by focusing on both the theoretical and policy foundations of technology such as economics of innovation, political economy of technological change, general purpose technologies such as nano-technology, bio-technology and information and communication technologies, clustering of innovative activity, technology policy and impact assestment, technology and work organisation. From the third semester onwards students have to enroll in non-credit PhD courses

  • STPS 699 Ph.D. Thesis

Students have to complete all coursework (3 must, 4 elective and one seminar course STPS 604) in the first four semesters. The students have to take the qualifier exam in the fifth semester. If successful the student proceeds to writing a PhD thesis upon successfull PhD proposal defense within six months of the qualifier exam. The maximum PhD education is 12 semesters.

PhD Degrees in Turkey

Universities in Turkey provide either two or four years of education for undergraduate studies, while graduate programs last a minimum of two years. There are around 820 higher education institutions in Turkey including 76 universities with a total student enrollment of over 1 million. The quality of education at the Turkish universities varies greatly, some providing education and facilities on par with internationally renowned schools.

Requirements for the PhD program often involve the student having already obtained a Master’s degree. Additionally, a thesis or dissertation primarily consisting of original academic research must be submitted. In some countries, this work may even need to be defended in front of a panel.

TÜRKİYE SCHOLARSHIPS   Türkiye Scholarships is a public higher education scholarship program administered by the Republic of Türkiye for international students. The strategic aim of Türkiye Scholarships is to enable students to receive education at international standards by providing equality of opportunity around the world. In addition, it is aimed to develop mutual cooperation between Türkiye and other countries and to contribute to regional and global development in many fields.   The higher education scholarship programs provided by Türkiye were branded under the name "Türkiye Scholarships" in 2012, and the studies began to be carried out under the coordination of the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB).   Türkiye Scholarships aims to provide international students with education and scholarship opportunities at the most prestigious universities in Türkiye, with the vision of expanding and developing social, cultural, political and economic ties between countries.   While Türkiye Scholarships received around 42 thousand applications in 2012, it has experienced a rapid increase in the number of applications over the years, reaching 121.830 applications from 170 countries in 2024. Within the scope of Türkiye Scholarships, approximately 5.000 international students are given scholarships every year. There are approximately 15.000 scholars who benefit from the Türkiye Scholarships program and are currently continuing their education.   OPPORTUNITIES COVERED BY TÜRKİYE SCHOLARSHIPS   Türkiye Scholarships is considered one of the most comprehensive scholarship programs in the world, with university and department placement, monthly scholarship, university tuition, health insurance, accommodation, Turkish language course, flight ticket and free academic and cultural program opportunities. · Undergraduate Level: 3,500 TL per month · Master's Level: 5,000 TL per month · PhD Level: 6,500 TL per month · Research Scholarship Program: 12,000 TL per month In addition to university education, it is aimed for students to benefit from social, cultural and professional programs and events during their time in Türkiye. Additionally, scholarships are provided through various modules for research and Turkish language education for academics, researchers and public officials. Türkiye Scholarships aim to reach successful and qualified students at all levels and in all fields of education, from health sciences to engineering, from humanities to social sciences.   WHY TÜRKİYE SCHOLARSHIPS   • Unlike other higher education scholarship programs, it provides university and department placements. • Covers university tuition fees. • 1-year Turkish language education allows you to learn the language of the country you will study in. In this way, sources for your academic research become more diverse and daily life becomes more fun. • Provides accommodation for students coming to a brand new country. • It will be with you when you come to Türkiye and when you return to your country at the end of your training period, and will cover your flight ticket only once. • Health insurance allows you to fully benefit from common health services when necessary.   APPLICATION   Applications are made online and free of charge on the Türkiye Scholarships website between January 10 and February 20 every year.   BASIC ACADEMIC SUCCESS CRITERIA FOR APPLICATION   · For Undergraduate candidates: 70% · For Master's and PhD candidates: 75% · For Health Sciences (Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy) candidates: 90%   AGE CRITERIA   · For undergraduate programs: under 21 years of age · For Master's programs: under 30 years of age · For PhD programs: under 35 years of age · For Research Scholarship: under 50 years of age   ELIGIBILITY   · Citizens of all countries · Graduates or those who will graduate at the end of the current academic year · Researchers and academics   NOT ELIGIBLE   · Turkish citizens and individuals who have lost Turkish citizenship · Individuals who are currently enrolled in programs at Turkish universities at the level of education they will apply for   EVALUATION AND SELECTION   Preliminary Review   All applications are examined based on basic criteria such as minimum academic success, age limits determined for the levels, and required documents.   Expert Evaluation   Applications of eligible candidates are carefully examined by the Expert Committee on a number of criteria such as academic standing, previous qualifications, academic interests, career goals, consistency of their preferences, content/comprehensibility of the letter of intent and participation in social activities. After this stage, a final list of qualified candidates is created for the interview process.   Interview Candidates selected and shortlisted from more than 100 countries are evaluated by Interview Committees consisting of academics and experts. The interview, which generally lasts 15-30 minutes, is conducted in the following way: · Welcome and check-in · Control of documents · Learning the candidate's application purpose · Academic knowledge and career goals · Closing and asking questions to the committee by the candidate Candidates invited to the interview, if they have not graduated, are required to bring all transcripts/report cards and certificates of the previous years they have completed to the interview.   Final Evaluation   The interview results of the applicants determined as candidates by the interview committees are evaluated by the final selection committee and a list of applicants who will receive a scholarship is created.

Job Summary:

The Department of Pediatrics is seeking a Graduate Medical Education (GME) Program Coordinator to join its expanding Residency Program administration team. With guidance from the Program Director and GME Program Manager, the GME Program Coordinator will oversee the day-to-day administration of the training program. This will include managing resident, faculty, and program evaluations; ensuring trainee and program compliance with institutional and accrediting body requirements; facilitating trainee onboarding, offboarding, and licensure; assisting with resident recruitment, orientation, and graduation; and providing general administrative support to the Program Director and Associate Program Directors as needed. The GME Program Coordinator will work closely with the entire residency education team, as well as liaise with departmental fellowship and undergraduate medical education stakeholders. The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health is a vibrant academic department comprising more than 200 faculty in 16 subspecialty divisions. The department promotes and enhances the health of children through outstanding clinical care, exemplary education of pediatric trainees, performance of cutting-edge research, and vigorous advocacy. Responsibilities:

  • 15% Maintains a thorough understanding of accreditation program requirements, regulatory requirements, and hospital and program policies to ensure accreditation and compliance with regulatory bodies and pertinent policies
  • 25% Contributes to the design, development and implementation of curriculum and evaluations. Schedules evaluations and teaching sessions, and creates and maintains the rotation and call schedules. Maintains accurate records of the curriculum, evaluations, and participation
  • 35% Manages workflow components of HR lifecycle functions from recruitment through alumni for residents/fellows
  • 10% Serves as a member of the education team or and as the primary contact for the program liaising with those directly associated with the program, the Institutional GME Office, and regulatory agencies. Serves as resource to advise residents/fellows of program/institutional policies and procedures
  • 5% Participates in professional opportunities presented by the Institutional GME Office for orientation and annually through the GME retreat, the Program Coordinator Subcommittee, and other opportunities within UW Health and UW-Madison. Shadows GME program administrative reviews one-two times per year
  • 10% Identifies, troubleshoots and resolves discrepancies, and processes and tracks resident/fellow and program expenditures and provides reports to department and Institutional GME Office as requested

The ICEd program is excited to welcome six new doctoral fellows this year. Read more below to find out about their research interests and plans at TC. 

Gabriela Chacon Ugarte

Gabriela’s research focuses on policy design related to teachers in Latin America, with a particular interest in understanding the motivations behind policymakers' decisions to reform public teachers' careers in the region. She began her career at the Peruvian Ministry of Education, where she designed evaluations of teachers’ performance in public schools. Gabriela later expanded her expertise to encompass teacher development issues within the same institution. Most recently, she served as an educational consultant for the Inter-American Development Bank. She holds an MA in International Educational Development from Teachers College, Columbia University, where she was a Fulbright Scholar.

Something special about TC

Teachers College allowed me to challenge and expand my understanding of education policy design by fostering a diverse environment where healthy and respectful discussions were the norm. Additionally, TC became a home away from home through my participation in ALAS, the Association of Latin American Students.

Tsewang Chuskit

Tsewang was born in Ladakh, a northern Himalayan region in India. From an early age, she observed a disconnect between her school textbook and her rich cultural community. This gap ignited her passion for developing contextually relevant curricula that considers students' cultural and linguistic background. Her research interest centers on critical literacy and its role in social change by integrating cultural elements, indigenous languages, and local stories into the classroom. She aims to address the underrepresentation of indigenous languages in school curricula by investigating language policy and translanguaging.

She co-founded a women’s health initiative that has educated over 1,600 girls and women on reproductive health, providing local resources and culturally relevant workshops in Ladakh. Through her work with NGOs such as Girls Inc., FHI 360, Geneva Global, and Health Inc., she has contributed to numerous educational projects, ranging from research and curriculum development to reproductive health education.

Her long-term goal is to advocate for multilingual and multicultural education in Himalayan region and promote critical literacy. She holds a BA in Education (International Strand) from Smith College, and an MA in International Educational Development from the University of Pennsylvania’s Graduate School of Education.

It is an honor to be part of the Teachers College community, which is dedicated to fostering social change through educational research worldwide. Coming from the Himalayan region, an underrepresented region in educational research, it was crucial for me to find a doctoral mentor whose work aligns with my interests. I am thrilled to have Dr. Prem Phyak as my mentor; his research and scholarly expertise deeply resonate with my goals.

Neil Potnis

Neil’s research focuses on the role digital media plays in climate education and its influence on local movements worldwide. He holds an MS in Computational Design Practices from Columbia University GSAPP, where he combined his background in arts technology with climate education to develop a decarbonization simulator for building materials.

Prior to joining Teachers College, he held positions as a Design Fellow at Columbia Entrepreneurship and Program Instructor at Columbia World Projects leading diverse groups including the Obama Foundation Scholars and Social Impact Fellows through workshops on social and environmental sustainability education. He also held research positions at Columbia’s Natural Materials Lab developing tools for climate education, Northeastern’s College of Arts, Media, and Design researching educational approaches to enhance constructive communication in online settings, and labr helping develop the first climate marketplace for direct action. 

As a scholar in International and Comparative Education, he aims to highlight the diverse global practices of climate action and citizenship while fostering connections between NGOs, educators, and policymakers through knowledge diffusion.

I’m excited to be part of a multidisciplinary, multicultural group of leaders from whom I can learn and collaborate to develop diverse pedagogies in social impact education.

Issa Rooney

Issa's research will be informed by her diverse teaching experiences, most recently in New York City schools and previously in Mozambique as a Peace Corps education volunteer. She plans to focus her research on teacher professional development in emergency contexts, with a particular interest in peer-to-peer learning models.

Issa earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from Teachers College, Columbia University, as a Peace Corps Fellow in the Department of Mathematics, Science, and Technology. During her time at Teachers College, Issa also taught high school science at a project-based high school. She has volunteered and worked with the International Rescue Committee's Youth Education team, supporting newcomer education initiatives. Currently, Issa serves as the Chair of Community Partnerships for the New York City Peace Corps Association.

I admire TC's focus on practice and community. Through work, internships, and volunteer opportunities, students gain invaluable real-world experiences that enrich their coursework. Faculty further enhance this connection by actively grounding course content and pedagogy in practical knowledge.

Nina Yacher

Nina’s passion is supporting teachers and school leaders to build inclusive and caring learning environments for all students. Her research interests lie at the intersection of educational policy, socioemotional and civic education, and teacher and principal education and practices. 

Prior to joining TC, Nina worked as a high school teacher in Chile through the Teach for All's local partner. She also worked as a teacher coach in several organizations and at the Chilean Department of Education, where she led a national initiative on project based learning. Additionally, she conducted research in several organizations such as UNDP, Aptus, and EMElab. In 2023, following her relocation to the U.S., Nina joined the Learning Policy Institute (LPI) as a full-time research and policy intern, where she contributed to case studies on teacher preparation.

Nina holds an M.A. in International Education Policy Analysis from Stanford University, a B.A. in Sociology from Universidad de Chile, and a teacher certification from Universidad Andrés Bello. Her master’s work, focused on implementation of practice-based teacher education in higher education institutions, was recently published by the Teaching and Teacher Education Journal.

The International Comparative Education Ph.D. program at Teachers College will offer me a unique opportunity to get a strong theoretical and empirical base for conducting research to foster peace, equity, and sustainable education systems worldwide, especially in developing countries. Continuing my education and research training at Teachers College will help me to pursue an academic career aimed at producing meaningful research by enhancing the collaboration between academia, educational policies, and school communities.

Javiera Zamora Iturra

Javiera (Javi) is an educational professional with over nine years of experience in educational and social institutions. She has managed programs within NGOs in Africa and taught students from 1st to 8th grade in Chile and the UK across private, public, and special education schools. Committed to making a significant societal impact, she aims to become a leader in the social field. Javi holds a M.A. in International Education from NYU Steinhardt School, where she worked with United Way in Accra, Ghana, focusing her research on anti-child trafficking and literacy programs. In this role, she visited multiple communities, supporting initiatives aimed at social reintegration for trafficking survivors. Her research on effective reintegration strategies included a comprehensive diagnostic of the issues and their drivers as well as detailed recommendations on the action plan to boost the anti-trafficking program in Ghana.

Excited for the future, Javi will be working to empower newcomers and resettled refugee students in New York City public schools through the Zankel fellowship program. She will focus her research on the role of education and edtech in providing solutions for realms of conflict.

Driven by a passion for education, she applies her academic knowledge to create positive societal change, continually striving to make a meaningful impact beyond the academic environment.

Graduate Medical Education

Graduate Medical Education (GME) consists of the residency and fellowship programs that prepare medical graduates to become competent, compassionate board-certified physicians in the specialty or subspecialty of their choice. With approximately 500 residents and fellows in 25+ programs – including two graduate dental education programs – New York Medical College (NYMC) has created a large GME consortium of teaching hospitals in New York and New Jersey. Our GME programs provide four essential ingredients:

  • Expert, board-certified faculty
  • Extensive and varied clinical experiences
  • Academic support and resources
  • Opportunities to participate in clinical and translational research

The School of Medicine sponsors at least one residency program in most major medical specialties and subspecialties; these opportunities are based at academic medical centers, university hospitals and other hospitals and health care agencies.

NYMC Residency Programs

Because GME is an essential component in the continuum of physician education, NYMC sponsors GME programs and considers its sponsorship central to the School of Medicine’s mission of providing excellence in medical education specialties and subspecialties.

Additional residencies and subspecialty fellowships accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) are sponsored by medical centers, hospitals and health care institutions based on an assessment of available faculty, clinical and educational resources, as well as the medical needs of the community.

Susan Ettner to Step Down as Dean of Graduate Education

Dear Colleagues:

I am writing to share that Dean of Graduate Education Susan Ettner has decided to step down from her role, effective Dec. 31, 2024. The Office of the EVCP will be in touch in the coming weeks about the search for the next dean.

As dean since July 2021, interim dean for 11 months before that and associate dean from 2017 to 2020, Dean Ettner has provided strong leadership of the Division of Graduate Education during a critical period that included the COVID-19 pandemic, academic employee strikes and changes to graduate education at UCLA associated with the resulting collective bargaining agreements.

Dean Ettner has improved support for student academic and professional success by creating a new Graduate & Postdoctoral Success unit, including several initiatives for faculty mentoring of graduate students and underrepresented student retention as well as expanded academic case management. She has successfully developed and implemented new Graduate Council-approved policies, most notably one that allows graduate students who need to enroll part-time to pay reduced tuition and fees. This year, she is implementing a new award for faculty mentoring of graduate students, departmental bonuses to encourage degree completion within normative time-to-degree and a transitional funding pilot program to support doctoral students whose funding is at risk due to a change in advisors.

With a focus on advancing equity, diversity and inclusion in graduate education, Dean Ettner implemented UCLA’s first-ever Graduate Admitted Student Days to improve yield of admitted graduate students from underrepresented groups. She also expanded the Competitive Edge bridge program for first-generation and underrepresented students to allow all disciplines to participate, increased application fee waiver options for economically disadvantaged students, and provided training resources and financial support for departments developing holistic admission rubrics.

Dean Ettner has enhanced transparency, equity and efficiency in the delivery of the division’s services by developing and implementing its first strategic plan, digitizing forms, beginning a complete overhaul of the division’s website , and creating a new customer service system that documents campus queries and supports institutional memory in a graduate education knowledge base . Additionally, she has enhanced data and information support for campus by creating resources such as customized data reports and a graduate student support budget tool to inform departmental decision-making around doctoral admissions. Currently she is finalizing a needs assessment with recommendations for improving postdoctoral scholar support at UCLA.

A UCLA faculty member since 1999, Dean Ettner will be returning to her positions as distinguished professor of general internal medicine and health services research in the David Geffen School of Medicine and distinguished professor of health policy and management in the Fielding School of Public Health.

Interim Chancellor Hunt and I are grateful for Dean Ettner’s years of service, and we will miss her steadfast, thoughtful and action-oriented leadership in the division. Please join us in thanking Dean Ettner for her many contributions to graduate education at UCLA.

Memphis pharmacy student wins appeal over 'vulgar' social media posts in free speech case

A federal appeals court ruled Tuesday that a Memphis graduate student’s social media posts were protected speech after the University of Tennessee Health Science Center temporarily expelled her from the school over posts made to the student’s private social media accounts in late 2020.

The 6th Circuit Court of Appeals determined that graduate student Kimberly Diei’s social media posts, which had no connection with the university, could not be used to threaten academic punishment.

“This ruling confirms what I’ve known all along,” Diei said. “I have a right to express myself in my private life that’s separate from school, and so do my classmates. I enrolled in pharmacy school to learn, not to have my taste in music and my thoughts on culture policed.”

The decision reverses a lower court’s August 2023 ruling that dismissed the case, sending the case back for further argument.

“Diei’s speech did not identify her with the College, had no connection to her studies, and did not lead to disruption,” the ruling stated. “So unless the College had a genuine educational purpose for regulating Diei’s speech, her communications fell safely within the confines of First Amendment protection.”

The case centered around a number of posts made on Diei’s personal social media accounts between 2020 and 2021. The accounts, under a pseudonym and with no mention of her university enrollment, contained various posts about fashion, song lyrics and sexuality — one post central to the complaint, for instance, was a joke made about a remix of Cardi B’s song "WAP."

Diei was investigated twice by university administrators over her posts after the school claimed anonymous complaints were made about what administrators said were “sexual,” “crude” and “vulgar” posts.

The school’s Professional Conduct Committee voted to expel her from the pharmacy program in late 2020, claiming her actions violated the school’s “professional behavior requirements” — requirements Diei stated she had never received.

The expulsion was reversed after lawyers from the Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression, commonly known as FIRE, wrote a letter to administration affirming Diei’s First Amendment rights to post on personal social media.

Shortly after, Diei filed a lawsuit against the university alongside FIRE.

Following the lawsuit dismissal in August 2023 and Diei’s subsequent appeal, the Stanton Foundation First Amendment Clinic at Vanderbilt Law School filed an amicus brief in support of her case.

“It is perilous for higher education institutions to stifle protected expression,” said Jennifer Safstrom, director of the clinic. “If schools are permitted to punish student speech online merely for being perceived as distasteful or lewd, it would have a significant and impermissible chilling effect on expression in collegiate and professional schools.”

FIRE praised the appeal court’s Tuesday decision to affirm Diei’s First Amendment rights.

“The court affirmed what a young woman says about sexuality on social media has nothing to do with her ability to be a pharmacist,” said Greg Greubel, a senior attorney at FIRE. “Kimberly stood up for every American who hopes to have a personal life in addition to their professional life.”

The University of Tennessee Health Science Center has not yet responded to a request for comment.

When she was a child, Mary Ellen Wiltrout PhD ’09 didn’t want to follow in her mother’s footsteps as a K-12 teacher. Growing up in southwestern Pennsylvania, Wiltrout was studious with an early interest in science — and ended up pursuing biology as a career. 

But following her doctorate at MIT, she pivoted toward education after all. Now, as the director of blended and online initiatives and a lecturer with the Department of Biology, she’s shaping biology pedagogy at MIT and beyond.

Establishing MOOCs at MIT

To this day, E.C. Whitehead Professor of Biology and Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) investigator emeritus Tania Baker considers creating a permanent role for Wiltrout one of the most consequential decisions she made as department head.

Since launching the very first MITxBio massive online open course  7.00x  (Introduction to Biology – the Secret of Life) with professor of biology Eric Lander in 2013, Wiltrout’s team has worked with  MIT Open Learning and biology faculty to build an  award-winning repertoire of MITxBio courses.

MITxBio is part of the online learning platform  edX , established by MIT and Harvard University in 2012, which today connects 86 million people worldwide to online learning opportunities. Within MITxBio, Wiltrout leads a team of instructional staff and students to develop online learning experiences for MIT students and the public while researching effective methods for learner engagement and course design.

“Mary Ellen’s approach has an element of experimentation that embodies a very MIT ethos: applying rigorous science to creatively address challenges with far-reaching impact,” says Darcy Gordon, instructor of blended and online initiatives.

Mentee to motivator

Wiltrout was inspired to pursue both teaching and research by the late geneticist  Elizabeth “Beth” Jones at Carnegie Mellon University, where Wiltrout earned a degree in biological sciences and served as a teaching assistant in lab courses.

“I thought it was a lot of fun to work with students, especially at the higher level of education, and especially with a focus on biology,” Wiltrout recalls, noting she developed her love of teaching in those early experiences.

Though her research advisor at the time discouraged her from teaching, Jones assured Wiltrout that it was possible to pursue both.

Jones, who received her postdoctoral training with late Professor Emeritus Boris Magasanik at MIT, encouraged Wiltrout to apply to the Institute and join American Cancer Society and HHMI Professor Graham Walker’s lab. In 2009, Wiltrout earned a PhD in biology for thesis work in the Walker lab, where she continued to learn from enthusiastic mentors.

“When I joined Graham’s lab, everyone was eager to teach and support a new student,” she reflects. After watching Walker aid a struggling student, Wiltrout was further affirmed in her choice. “I knew I could go to Graham if I ever needed to.”

After graduation, Wiltrout taught molecular biology at Harvard for a few years until Baker facilitated her move back to MIT. Now, she’s a resource for faculty, postdocs, and students.

“She is an incredibly rich source of knowledge for everything from how to implement the increasingly complex tools for running a class to the best practices for ensuring a rigorous and inclusive curriculum,” says  Iain Cheeseman , the Herman and Margaret Sokol Professor of Biology and associate head of the biology department.

Stephen Bell, the Uncas and Helen Whitaker Professor of Biology and instructor of the Molecular Biology series of MITxBio courses, notes Wiltrout is known for staying on the “cutting edge of pedagogy.”

“She has a comprehensive knowledge of new online educational tools and is always ready to help any professor to implement them in any way they wish,” he says.

Gordon finds Wiltrout’s experiences as a biologist and learning engineer instrumental to her own professional development and a model for their colleagues in science education.

“Mary Ellen has been an incredibly supportive supervisor. She facilitates a team environment that centers on frequent feedback and iteration,” says Tyler Smith, instructor for pedagogy training and biology.

Prepared for the pandemic, and beyond

Wiltrout believes blended learning, combining in-person and online components, is the best path forward for education at MIT. Building personal relationships in the classroom is critical, but online material and supplemental instruction are also key to providing immediate feedback, formative assessments, and other evidence-based learning practices.

“A lot of people have realized that they can’t ignore online learning anymore,” Wiltrout noted during an interview on  The Champions Coffee Podcast  in 2023. That couldn’t have been truer than in 2020, when academic institutions were forced to suddenly shift to virtual learning.

“When Covid hit, we already had all the infrastructure in place,” Baker says. “Mary Ellen helped not just our department, but also contributed to MIT education’s survival through the pandemic.”

For Wiltrout’s efforts, she received a COVID-19 Hero Award , a recognition from the School of Science for staff members who went above and beyond during that extraordinarily difficult time.

“Mary Ellen thinks deeply about how to create the best learning opportunities possible,” says Cheeseman, one of almost a dozen faculty members who nominated her for the award.

Recently, Wiltrout expanded beyond higher education and into high schools,  taking on several interns in collaboration with  Empowr , a nonprofit organization that teaches software development skills to Black students to create a school-to-career pipeline. Wiltrout is proud to report that one of these interns is now a student at MIT in the class of 2028.

Looking forward, Wiltrout aims to stay ahead of the curve with the latest educational technology and is excited to see how modern tools can be incorporated into education.

“Everyone is pretty certain that generative AI is going to change education,” she says. “We need to be experimenting with how to take advantage of technology to improve learning.”

Ultimately, she is grateful to continue developing her career at MIT biology.

“It’s exciting to come back to the department after being a student and to work with people as colleagues to produce something that has an impact on what they’re teaching current MIT students and sharing with the world for further reach,” she says.

As for Wiltrout’s own daughter, she’s declared she would like to follow in her mother’s footsteps — a fitting symbol of Wiltrout’s impact on the future of education.
